Questions for Students
• How do I balance an open-ended exploration with the demands of creating a body of work? • What do I need to sustain my practice? Economically, psychologically, philosophically?
• Who is my audience and how do I redefine traditional notions of the dichotomy between the art world and the non-art public?
• Does art need to have a social/political value? How do I make a contribution? How do I know if any of this is worthwhile to anyone other than me? • How important is it to be innovative? Are innovations primarily formal in nature? • What does it mean to be an artist of one’s time? Do I need to situate my work in a historical context? • What does it mean to critically defend my work? How much do I need to say? To write? To explain? Do I need to have a developed theoretical back-story to what I do? • How do I know what to ask for myself and my work?

The big difference between liberal LGBT identity politics and revolutionary queer politics is:
That the goal of liberal LGBT identity politics is to present four (or 5, 6, 7, depending on the acronym) clearly defined LGBT identities with an easily digestable narrative to them to so that LGBT people may be understood, incorporated into societies notions of normalcy and turned into respectable citizens under capitalism.
While the goal of revolutionary queer politics is to complicate identity, to defy definition, to disrupt clear narratives, to continue to be confusing and paradoxical, so that queer people can not be incorporated or turned into respectable citizens and can continue on their struggle to destroy normalcy and respectability, which is a struggle that connects us to all struggles against oppression.
If we seem blatantly sexual or grotesquely unfuckable, if we make polite company uncomfortable, if we seem self-contradicting, if we wear slurs like badges of honor, if we’re bad rolemodels, if we seem weird or dangerous, that’s the point.

In the past, we assumed that when machines reached near-human performance in tasks like image recognition, it would be thanks to fundamental breakthroughs into the nature of cognition. We would be able to lift the lid on the human mind and see all the little gears turning. What’s happened instead is odd. We found a way to get terrific results by combining fairly simple math with enormous data sets. But this discovery did not advance our understanding. The mathematical techniques used in machine learning don’t have a complex, intelligible internal structure we can reason about. Like our brains, they are a wild, interconnected tangle. Because machine learning tracks human performance so well in some domains (like machine translation or object recognition), there is a temptation to anthropomorphize it. We assume that the machine’s mistakes will be like human mistakes. But this is a dangerous fallacy. As Zeynep Tufekci has argued, the algorithm is irreducibly alien, a creature of linear algebra. We can spot some of the ways it will make mistakes, because we’re attuned to them. But other kinds of mistakes we won’t notice, either because they are subtle, or because they don’t resemble human error patterns at all.

There will be no comparable rewards for cooperation, de-escalation, consensus-building, or compromise, qualities that are essential for the slow work of building a movement. People who should be looking past their differences will instead spend their time on purity tests and trying to outflank one another in a race to the fringes.”
