While the holidays are a time of rejoicing with family members in the final days leading up to the new year, for one family it erupted in a bloodbath. Ronald Gene Simmons, an ex military man, was being investigated on tips that not only had he been sexually abusing his teenage daughter, he also impregnated her and fathered her child. He quickly relocated the family to Ward, Arkansas, to escape prosecution and begin a fresh, new life somewhere else. But he showed no intention or desire to modify his behavior. His alcoholism started increasing and a series of reported sexual harassment on his part cut him loose form his job. In December 1987, Ronald’s wife decided it was time to leave her husband and take her children and grandchildren with her. Before she could do so, Ronald caught wind of the plan–this resulted in the deadliest and most prolific familicide in American history. On December 22, 1987, he shot his wife and eldest son both in the heads, then strangled his 3-year-old granddaughter to death. He waited for his other children to arrive later that day and told them he had a gift for them but had to show them each individually. One by one, he led them out to the back of their trailer home and held their heads under a barrel of water, drowning them. Four days later, the rest of the children came for a visit. He shot his son and son’s wife and strangled their infant son. Then he shot his Shelia, the one he impregnated and her husband and their children (including the one he fathered). Then he placed their bodies in neat rows in the lounge area. He spent the rest of the night drinking and watching TV as if nothing ever happened.
On December 28, Ronald left his trailer home and initiated a bloody murder spree. He visited many local businesses, killing two and injuring three more people. His final stop was at the Woodline Motor Freight Company, the same company he got fired from on claims of sexual harassment. After shooting and wounding a former coworker, he had a calm conversation with a secretary until police arrived. He surrendered without resistance. Ronald Simmons was sentenced to death to death a whopping 16 times. He refused to appeal his death sentence, infamously saying, ‘‘To those who oppose the death penalty–in my particular case, anything short of death would be cruel and unusual punishment.’‘ He was executed in 1990.
