“I realize that Italians would never decorate their home with wildflowers. Wildflowers are weeds, and do not represent a respectable home. A vase of roses would be more suitable within a culture engrained with bella figura. The idea of bella figura means many things in Italy. the poet needs a minute. the poet has to take a step back/ or five the poet, so used to shining a light on everything, so used to mourning publicly, treating loss like a ceremony/ or a production has exposure shakes, has a sense of being gutted by the pen. the poet feels unbalanced, feels off-kilter, left-of-center/ or maybe wounded the poet hit a brick wall and wrote through it. then hit another brick wall. then hit another brick wall. the poet doesn’t always want to write through it/ or does but can’t. the poet asks for a break/ or leniency/ or understanding and doesn’t know who they’re really asking
