I went a celebration of life for Mac on Friday night and the second they played the “Best Day Ever” music video I had tears in my eyes. The old home videos of him as a child reminded me He was human. He was a person. He was such a beautiful and talented soul. I don’t think any other celebrity death has impacted me this much besides when Cory Monteith passed away back in 2013.
I have so many memories starting my days off in 8th grade and freshmen year of high school listening to Mac, especially Blue Slide Park, on the bus. He’s an artist we’ve all seen grow over the years and when I got the news of his passing, I was honestly in shock. Shock. Denial. Disbelief. Hurt. Heartbroken. Regretful. And so much more. So many emotions. A man who was open and honest with all of his music, who impacted so many of our lives, shaped us during our teenage years, and helped so many get through rough patches and dark days couldn’t be saved himself. It’s one of those ”I wish I appreciated you more while you were and I hope you knew we loved you and your music” things.
He’s one of the artists I never got a chance to see live but I do remember when I saw Ariana for the first time in 2013, I was so hopeful Mac would come out and perform “The Way” with her. My friends and I were so upset all we got was the music video with him playing in the background but were hype regardless during his verse. A picture is truly worth a thousand words. Ariana posted the photo above with no caption and it had me in tears because it truly captured his entire essence and beautiful soul.
I hope Mac finds peace. And wherever he is, I hope he’s continuing his craft. Legends never die and his music/legacy will live on forever. Love you Malcom. Thank you for helping shape apart of who I am.
