I recently had the opportunity to speak on a panel of Loyola Marymount University Alumni to answer questions about our career paths in the creative field, since graduating from our undergraduate programs at LMU. It was wonderful to reconnect with fellow alumni and share our experiences, so far, with younger aspiring artists and designers! A BIG thank you to Nicole Murph for creating this exciting speaker series at LMU. I am honored to have been included : )

Jessica Stockholder!
Looking at Jessica Stockholder's work gave me that art spark I needed this week! It was at 1303PE Gallery on Wilshire. I was completely reeled in by the peculiar use of commonplace materials and plastic-y scraps and swatches in her sculptures. There was a whole section on the side of the room, around a long window, that was covered in dull green carpeting. You could see the carpet rippling up on the sides, lifting off the wall a little, and a giant asymmetrical hot pink stripe painted on the window that continued onto the carpet. And another art piece sort of sat up right next to it and overlapped a bit. It was so fearlessly awkward.
I wish I hadn't forgotten my camera! Here I just posted photos of work I found online. All of Jessica's sculptures/installations have this sense of humor and play, but also this eerie-ness, the kind that leans more towards mysterious and makes you wonder. The work stimulates curiosity, which is one of the best things to bring out of someone!
In this interview she did with BOMB Magazine (http://bombsite.com/issues/41/articles/1576), 2 things really stood out for me…
1. "As I get to understand something a little better, it is less interesting and less beautiful."
2. "I tend to take advantage of what happens. I don't spend time getting upset if a piece of wood breaks, I figure out how to make use of the break. I would rather take what is available to me and run with it. I would rather do that than bang my head against the wall because I don't have what I need."
The first one is so inspiring because she just thrives off of curiosity and the desire to learn. This means she never stops growing and changing and that is exactly what I hope to continue to do...forever!
This second one hit close to home because, I have been subconsciously blaming my lack of making things on not having the materials I need, but in reality I have a studio overflowing of junk that I could totally put to good use. It's just a matter of DOING it!!!
