Kindness is Magic

A scene from Derek - TV Show (2012) spread the idea that "Kindness is magic, it is more important to be kind than clever or good looking." This thought is so powerful that it continues to spread through conversations on Twitter with hashtag #KindnessisMagic.

Derek, played by @rickygervais is a loyal nursing home caretaker who sees only the good in his quirky co-workers as they struggle against prejudice and shrinking budgets to care for their elderly residents.

One day, Derek's favourite resident Joan Weaver passes away and Derek shares a memory he had with her. He tells that she once said, "Kindness is magic Derek, cause it is more important to be kind than clever or good looking." (see infographic).

Here is what Ricky Gervais tweeted about this idea, his tweet received 2,183 retweets and 832 favorites as on March 24, 2013, which explains it impact.

It is interesting to see how people got inspired by Derek and spread the idea of being kind, several of them have been practicing it too.

Marketers around the world offer incentives to customers who refer them to their friends, family, colleagues, etc to win referral business, treating it as a lead/ sales generation activity.

What they fail to understand is that Referral Marketing is not just a lead/ sales generation activity but an exercise to learn if they are worthy of a reference or not.

Only incentives to customers is not a the best way to promote yourself. You need to give confidence to the customer that when they refer you to their friends, you will not let them down.

Offer better services, negotiated price and more value to people who come to you via customer referral. Such offers gives your customers confidence to refer you to others.

Brilliant ad, but wrong product

Happy Diwali!

Diwali begins today, so does advertising campaigns of large and small companies.

Today morning, I saw a TVC by Idea Cellular, 3rd largest mobile services operator in India, trying to promote their brand. I really liked the TVC, it was simple, pulled my attention, a common man can easily relate to the situation shown and it touches emotions as-well, but it was not relevant for a Telecom Operator (Brilliant ad but, wrong product). It looked like an ad of a Watch Company offering 50% off on occasion of Diwali.

Let me take you through the ad...

A simple muslim boy (Customer) standing outside a Watch Store, looking at the watches in the display window, likes a ladies watch, he then takes a look at its price tag of Rs.8,850, finding it above his budget he steps back (feels disappointed).

A salesman who was watching him from inside the store, understands that the customer is finding the watch above his budget. He walks towards the window display, smiles at the customer and lifts the small standee which says "Diwali Offer 50% Off" and wishes him a Happy Diwali! (with a warm smile).

The customer feels very happy, he excitedly runs inside the shop and hugs the salesman. He decides to buy and gift the watch to his wife. [Voice Over: Celebrating every festival (Diwali in this case - across all religions) is a great idea]
