Before the War

Max eye’d Yana for a moment after she asked about what the place was. It wasn’t that he didn’t trust her. No, if truth be fully told he trusted her a wee bit too much for a chance encounter. He was just hesitant to tell her the truth in case it would drive her away, not that he was going to tell her the exact illegal side of it, but still he had to thread carefully yet give her some detail,
“It’s a Gentleman’s club.. We’ve private members who we know very well and we provide drink, entertainment and some private areas for them.. ” Max explained a few seconds later as he led Yana back down towards the kitchen then out into the large atrieum where the various rooms both public and private came off, all the while carrying Ethan lovingly in his arms. Finally feeling that his role as his Father had truly begun now.
The way of the Fair Folk. Why had she even bothered to ask. It was obvious that he wasn’t telling her the truth but rather what he might thought she wanted to hear? Of course it was partly true, it was a Gentleman’s Club, she had heard the laughter, and it surely wasn’t open for anyone. And she had been in the private areas herself, but that still didn’t really mean anything.
“ I see.” is all she answered. She wasn’t angry but didn’t see any reason in asking him more questions that he wasn’t likely to answer. So she walked next to him quietly, letting her eyes wander over every surface to make sure they were safe.
She couldn’t fault him for staying quiet. She wasn’t sure how much she would be willing to tell him about her past yet. “ Is the baby alright?” she asked to break the silence after a while, not knowing what else to say to him.
