“What if I never walk again? What if I never move again? What if it affects my mind? What if I can’t be Batman-?” If you know me even a little bit, it’s obvious that Batman is my favorite super hero of all time. He is the greatest detective in the world who has no equal in combat or stealth techniques and he never, ever gives up. Batman is tested far beyond his limits to stop Bane and his loyal followers from wreaking havoc upon Gotham City, but Bane wants more than just the city; He intends to break Batman’s body, spirit and existence. Batman finds it challenging to step down as the Caped Crusader while he attempts to find a capable successor and adjust to a new life of stagnancy as Bruce Wayne. There is doubt if he will ever wear the cowl again. He’s entrusted a Jean Paul Valley to fill in as Batman until Bruce Wayne is healed. Challenges of power and authority arise as Tim Drake witnesses the questionable methods Valley is using. Valley has a different vision for Batman and with that vision the transformation of Batman is shown not only in the method he uses, but in the suit he creates as well. Bruce Wayne, as persistent as ever, decides to not sit idly by while the his doctor is kidnapped, Arkham inmates roam about the city and a new Batman breaks the one rule he has. After he’s done all he can from sideline, Bruce Wayne discovers the whereabouts of his doctor, Shondra Kinsolving, and decides to rescue her. It’s a joint effort in how they are able to escape, but the event leaves them both changed forever. Bruce Wayne then recovers fully and finds it challenging to become the Batman he once was and must revisit old mentors and techniques to establish both his capacity for violence and correct conditioning. He confronts Jean Paul Valley and reveals that Batman is his creation and his alone. But this Batman that Bruce has newly developed is also different than the one he knew before, leaving his and Tim Drake to question, “... Is there still a Batman?” I really enjoyed reading this book and found it hard to put down! Wanna be a writer? Find a different way to say “I’m going to the store” every single time you say it. Come up with nicknames for all of your friends. Ask people questions, welcome conversation from an outside perspective, do not drop a topic until you are satisfied. For every different room in which you find yourself on every single day, point out at least one thing that is there, but shouldn’t be there, and why it shouldn’t be there. Then take maybe ten minutes a week to get it down on the page. Writing only takes a long time when the only time you think about writing is when you are writing.
