Hubble and James Webb comparison.
Hubble space telescope can see back to 13.5 billion years, around when the modern galaxies were formed and the Big Bang happened 13.8 billion years ago. With the JAMES WEBB telescope we can peer into an unseen time period in the universe- back to when the first galaxies, the first black holes and the first stars came into existence.
James Webb telescope is as close as we ever got to understand the Big Bang!!!!!
This is Amazing.
I just want to dwell a little bit on the raw awe that the Webb telescope pictures evoke in me. We built a thing, we spent 20 years building a thing, and we flung it over a million kilometres away, and the thing we built takes ⌠pictures of infinity. Pictures of 13 billion years in the past, pictures of the birth and death of stars, galaxies colliding, snapshots of other worlds. Lightyears of distance, aeons of time, glories almost beyond imagining.
This is a thing humanity can do. We can pool imagination, we can pool resources, we can devote decades of our lives, to building a camera that can photograph infinity. We can reach out, fling a piece of ourselves, our ingenuity, our dedication, our collaboration, our imagination, and create a lens so that we can see, we can touch âŚ
There are people who say that pictures like this make them feel small, so tiny in comparison to the vastness thatâs out there, but we touched that vastness. We took its picture. We put our palms on the panes of infinity. We flung a tiny tiny fragile machine, a collection of mirrors and motors and shields and fuel, out into the absolute vastness of space, more than a million kilometers distant, and took a picture of a dying star orbiting its partner two thousand lightyears away.
I mean, yes, we are tiny, we are incomprehensibly tiny, and so is everything we do and everything we build. But all that shows is that something so tiny can still do that. Can reach that far. Can witness that much.
We are incomprehensibly tiny and an incomprehensible miracle, that we can be so tiny in all this vastness, that everything we witness in these pictures aligned in such a way that we could form, and that in response, as tiny as we are, we can think and imagine and create on a scale that can ⌠witness the universe right back. Touch it. Focus its light into an image of a billion, thirteen billion years ago. Share that image with a billion other minds.
We can see wonders. Absolute wonders. On a scale to beggar meaning. What more purpose do we need than that?
Sorry. Just. Sometimes science does something that just ⌠wraps a whole fist around your heart and just goes ⌠this is what wonder is. The wonder of the universe. And the wonder of us. This is what wonder feels like. This is what awe feels like.
This is what it feels like to be tiny. This is what it feels like to be infinite.
I love the stars so much.
history will say they were best friends

Hereâs one good thing to come out of 2020:
Paleontologists completed a life-sized replica of Sue, the most complete T. Rex ever found.
And she is freaking GORGEOUS!
As I read more about this beauty, I found out some new details regarding things I thought I previously knew about the beast that was Tyrannosaurus Rex, and Iâm going to share them with you.
First, and most obvious, her size:
This is nothing new, we all figured T. Rex was big, but I for one never stopped to consider exactly how big it was. Nobody ever really knows what to imagine when they read about something the size of a whale that walked around and ate everything it could kill.Â
Speaking of eating things, I just want to remind you all that T. Rex hadâby milesâthe strongest bite of any terrestrial animal living or dead, somewhere around six and a half tons of force. Thatâs over six times greater than the current estimate of what Allosaurus was capable of, and three times what was delivered by the highest measured reading of the living title holderâthe estuarine crocodile. It didnât have to waste time swinging its head open-mouthed like Saurophaganax for a little extra oomph, or grow fancy serrated teeth like Carcharodontosaurus to cut pieces out of its prey. It opted for the simplest approach: get its mouth around something and crush it to death; imagine the full weight of an elephant on whatever was between this thingâs jaws.
âHow did it find something to eat?â I hear you asking. âIt canât see something if it doesnât move, right?â
Listen, I love Jurassic Park too, but thatâs a big crock of shit.
Notice how both her eyes face forward. That gives her binocular vision (the ability to focus both eyes on one target, like you and I). More importantly it means she has impeccable depth perception due to overlapping fields of vision from each, large, eyeball. Researchers agree that T. Rex not only had incredible vision, but that it was probably better than most modern animalsâincluding eagles, hawks, and owlsâand that she could likely spot something three and a half miles away. If something that big can see that well, it doesnât matter if you move or not, sheâd be able to tell if it was an animal trying to hide or a piece of vegetation. So pray she isnât hungry if she lays eyes on you. And even if by some miracle she didnât see you, sheâd still smell you.Â
If she decided you looked tasty, you probably wouldnât hear her coming as much as youâd feel her. Modern science indicates that T. Rex didnât roar like in Jurassic Park, but rather bellowed or maybe even hissed like crocodilians. If she were on to you, youâd most likely feel this sense of unease creep up your spine as a low-pitched rumble in the air permeated through you. You wouldnât know what it was or where it was coming from until you hear her footfalls. By then itâs too lateâyou could try to run but sheâd probably catch you. Thereâs plenty on YouTube that reconstructs what T. Rex may have sounded like, and itâs legitimately haunting. Â
To wrap all of this up, the one bit of good that came out of the cursed year that is 2020 is that this wonderful child of science and art came into the world, and reaffirmed my respect and admiration for the eight ton slab of muscle and teeth that is this magnificent creature.
âŚand it is nothing if not magnificent.
I honestly expected like three notes, what happened!?
Palaeontologists are the ones providing the data and advice but donât give them full credit, this life-sized sculpture was created by ARTISTS, the artist team of @bluerhinostudioâ
They also created this Quetzalcoatlus that made the rounds online (image credit goes to National Geographic)
As well as many more amazing sculptures and dioramas, so please check them out here on Tumblr and on Instagram
They are currently working on a new Tyrannosaurus again which will be on display in Europe (image credit goes to Blue Rhino Studio)
Please give the amazing team of Blue Rhino Studio the credit they deserve
Not to kill the buzz but where are the feathers??
As it stands now, there is no evidence for or against feathers on Tyrannosaurus specifically, so either way to depict it would be equally accurate at the moment, if feathers are present they would be on the back and shoulder region as that is the only spot that doesnât have preserved skin impressions
Below is a handful guide by Dr. Mark Witton who happens to be both a palaeontologist and an artist:
Fun fact! Sue officially uses they/them pronouns! Scientists donât know if they were male or female. Because of that, and as a gesture of good will to the LGBT+ community, scientists officially use they/them pronouns to refer to SUE the T-Rex!
â(Please, do not body-shame our T. rex. SUE is perfect just the way they are. And, yes, âtheyâ is correct thereâscientists donât know if SUE was male or female, so in the spirit of scientific accuracy and LGBTQ inclusivity, weâve transitioned to singular âthey/themâ pronouns instead of calling SUE âsheâ or âher.â)â

âPlease, do not body-shame our T. rexâ is the funniest thing Iâve seen in at least 20 minutes
apparently I never posted my art of my beloved she's my main dps
Just to be clear, this is not a shitpost or a joke. This 22 year old has in fact been appointed mayor of the Welsh town of Bangor.

So someone pointed out to me recently that in a few years, maybe a few decades, the history of the us during covid is probably going to get twisted. The fact that we all had to make and wear cloth masks is going to be hailed as a symbol of how we â"came together as a nationâââ or whatever the fuck propaganda spin they try to put on it.
So I just want to say, for the record, the time of the corona virus pandemic was not a time when america came together.
This was a time when people hoarded toilet paper and sanitizing supplies either for themselves or to sell at absurd prices to the desperate people who didnât get to the store soon enough during the shortages
This was a time when scared parents were sending their kids to finish school in the spring in plastic trash bags because they couldnât think of any other way to possibly keep their families safe
This was a time when grocery store and retail and service workers were forced to keep working whether they wanted to risk their health or not because they couldnât make rent otherwise and the people with enough privilege to have remote jobs tried to repay them with applause instead of fair wages
This was a time when nurses had the hold the hands of multiple dying people every day as their families watched their loved ones die over a video call because the hospital couldnât risk having visitors
This was a time when city governments had to handle so many eviction hearings that they rented out convention centers and called in the national guard instead of doing a rent freeze to stop predatory landlords
This was a time when racism and police brutality were so unbearably horrible that people protested in the streets for months even though there was a god damn pandemic that our federal government wasnât doing shit to stop and the cops were so mad that they were being asked to stop beating up black people that they were beating up everyone
This was a time when schools being forced to reopen in the fall or lose their federal funding had to draft templates for letters if a teacher or a staff person or a fucking child died from exposure to corona at school
This was a time when the president of the United states demanded that the cdc stop releasing data about all the people who were dying because of the warnings he ignored for months were making him look bad
This was a time when some state governments didnât mandate masks and forced businesses to reopen because they didnât want to pay unemployment to people trying to stay safe at home anymore
This was a time when Jeff Bezos was on track to be a fucking trillionare because everyone was ordering things on amazon instead of going to the store and the people he worked to death to get it didnât see a single cent of it
This was a time when instead of providing homeless people with housing, we painted boxes on the ground to show homeless people how far away the had to be on the street to maintain social distancing
We did not come together to make cloth masks. Cloth masks represent nothing less than the absolute and utter failure of a nationâs government to inform and protect its citizens
This was not a time when we came together. This was a time when we survived, and not all of us made it.
This was a time when people casually talked about how many human lives the economy was worth without considering the evil that had just come out of their mouths.
This was a time when thousands of us died for profit and the ego of a cheating narcissists con man who scammed his way into the white house
This was a time that we survived. Most of us tried to do the right thing, stay home, limit trips to the store and socializing, wear a mask. And still, so many of us were lost. Thousands every day.
But that wasnât a good enough reason for some people, for those among us who were too selfish to recognize the responsibilities we have toward one another as human beings.
This was not a time that we came together
This was a time that we survived
Not all of us made it
And those of us who did survive will never forget the evil we saw daily in our politicians and those around us
