ive talked about "childhood friends gone wrong" on here before right

there's probably already a name for this but it's a trope i coined for a very specific type of dynamic that im consistently obsessed with. give me two people who grew up together and played together and were each other's best friend and then Something Happened and now everything's fucked up but they're still friends. or they want to be at least. you look so different now and everything is so much more complicated now than when we played in your backyard but literally who else knows me better than you. who else could i ever call my best friend

got back into inazuma eleven and while rewatching areori i realized they deserved a fanart because their dynamic is hilarious (istg this looked better in sketch)

also i got heavily inspired by angel's friends to draw them this is why this looks like a middle school drawing

yuriko didn't want her son to know that his father had abandoned him but from her side also she didn't want a coward to have a presence in any way in her home so she kept up the story that her husband had died overseas. so theres spite. but there's also shame for having been abandoned, for his failure which in no way was hers too. but this also intersected with her own shame for her own decisions, for going back to her home island instead of following him abroad. she thought just as her husband she too was running away from her fears, so there were actually two cowards in her house. and she feared that her son, having been raised by a coward, too, would turn out just like his parents

1) an assurance that she and asuto would always be by his side (don't like this route personally but maybe if she had sent more than one letter before giving up this was somewhere among them) 2) yuriko expressed her disappointment in herself in her letter to asuto so maybe her last letter was a 10 pages vent with a final note that she didn't want to see shinjou ever again in her life 3) (current favorite option) the picture was sent with no message from yuriko, a picture of a happy family even without the husband and father, a message that we don't need you to be content anyway. wherever you are whatever you're doing, know that we're happy without you. plus maybe a curt letter from yone (who's sending the picture) that asked him to contact her first if he ever had the gall to return to yuriko and asuto

the thing is that orion wasn't always like this, yk? there was a time when they were dedicated to worldwide youth football development without exploiting children and their hopes for the football business, and shinjou contributed in that endeavor too. it's something to be proud of. but I guess at the end it doesn't matter—shinjou died with his football career, it doesn't matter what hes doing with orion bc he thought it's too late for atonement, and the service he's doing too doesn't count as an atonement because all he's doing is run away, and if yuriko had known this all she'd see was a man who would rather hide from his family and worse yet act like they never existed in the first place... but I wonder if maybe shinjou's resurface as an orion employee had sparked a little hope in yuriko that her husband has got his shit back together again and maybe would one day in the near time come back to them. although more likely is that it quickly dawned on her that it's all vain, he's dedicated to his job because he didn't want to come back, he would be there for children all around the world except his own. maybe she'd contacted him somehow but it always was unreciprocrated. maybe he had the picture of yuriko and asuto on the hill because she sent it as a final goodbye. I wonder what sort of parting message she'd sent him with the picture.
