I, Robot is a 2004 film starring Will Smith, directed by Alex Proyas. The film is based from the collection of short stories written by Isaac Asimov. The story revolves around police detective that hates and distrusts robots but will team up with one to save the human race.
Set in a future Earth (2035 A.D.) where robots are common assistants and workers for their human owners, this is the story of "robotophobic" Chicago Police Detective Del Spooner's investigation into the murder of Dr. Alfred Lanning, who works at U.S. Robotics, in which a robot, Sonny , appears to be implicated, even though that would mean the robot had violated the Three Laws of Robotics, which is apparently impossible. It seems impossible because.. if robots can break those laws, there's nothing to stop them from taking over the world, as humans have grown to become completely dependent upon their robots. Or maybe... they already have? Aiding Spooner in his investigation is a psychologist, Dr. Susan Calvin, who specializes in the psyches of robots. (this is short for I don’t want to spoil you guys)
The movie shows us what can happen in the future as technology continue to progress. At first, it started on low-emotion scenes but later on, the intensity develops making it exciting. I really liked the narration for it’s not that predictable. It doesn’t have any cliché scenes, it just works uniquely beautiful as it is.
The central themes of the movie are Good vs. Evil, The Battle, and Triumph vs. Adversity.
Will Smith portrayed Detective Del Spooner- a homicide detective that distrusts robots . But as he teams up with one, the hate toward robots changed as he realizes Sonny can rationalize and make his own choices rather than just follow his programming.
Bridget Moynahan played the role of Dr. Susan Calvin, a smart doctor for robots. Her intelligence is a great help to Spooner as they fight robots.
The symbolic or visual codes are convincing. Spooner’s clothes are really antique (eg: his converse shoes) plus the things in his apartment are retro-ish as a clue that he distrusts the latest inventions especially robots. Calvin’s clothes also represent the smart girl image. The colors are in its right place that made the setting more futuristic. As if the movie is cutted from the future.
The two things I loved most in the movie are its music (audio codes), editing and the dialogue (especially Spooner’s XD). Everything about the technical codes were okay- the camerawork, lighting, recording- but the three for me really stand out.
For me, the battle scene at the top of the USR building, where the trio fulfilled their roles harmoniously, is the most prominent scene in the movie. That even though they are very different from each other, one can’t work effectively without the other.
There may be thousands of sci-fi films but the “I, Robot” is incomparable because of its message. As the technology evolves, we must always stay vigilant because not all things that makes our life easier will consistently do good to us.
