Kurt sighed and looked away from his laptop. Reading through the missionary clothing guidelines was proving to be an exercise in frustration. Despite already owning 18 suit jackets, five vintage suits, and more button-down shirts and neckties than he could count, he was going to have to go shopping. He had just won McKinley High’s senior superlatives for classiest dresser (and well he should have—no one in Ohio had his eye for fashion), but it wouldn’t matter when he graduated and went on his mission.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was looking for a different kind of, ahem, ‘classy.’

Gina finished a quick email and poked her head outside her office to see if the next candidate had by chance arrived early. He had; a trim figure in a classic grey suit sat on a bench in the waiting room, examining his surrounds with sharp eyes. An expensive leather briefcase rest by designer shoes; a purple scarf took the ensemble from standard to fashionable. Gina judged him to be in his early thirties.
“Mr. Hummel?”
He stood and smiled, extending his hand. “Kurt, please.” His smile seemed genuine, his handshake firm and dry.

When for the first time in his life Kurt held a reel of thread in his hand, he had no notion of fashion. As he grasped the reel with his tiny chubby fingers, feeling proud at being trusted with it, he never took his eyes off his mother’s hands and a huge (must be his dad’s) sock with a hole instead of a heel. He watched and watched, and the hole disappeared, like magic, with flicks of a hand.
When his mother was done, he reached forward and asked to try. But she tucked the needle into the cushion and gently pried his fingers from the reel, “Oh sweetie, you’re too young. Wait a couple of years, and I’ll teach you how to sew.” She ruffled his hair and returned the box to its place on the top shelf.

For as long as Kurt can remember, he’s always loved fashion.
As a little kid, he’d spent hours looking through his mom’s fashion catalogues, small chubby fingers leaving sticky fingerprints on the pages, blue eyes widening when he’d caught a particular pretty or interesting outfit.
Kurt also remembers that he’d picked out his outfits for the day himself, knowing very well what he wanted from a very early age on.
Of course, back then, it had been mostly about the aesthetics. Even as a four- or five- year-old child, Kurt just knew what looked good and what didn’t.
