A Mississippi police officer shot and killed 1-year-old Kohen Wiley at a Walmart while responding to a shoplifting call.

Eddy Guerrero was down and depressed after suffering serious injuries in a car accident on New Year’s Day 1999. He never expected that the man who would pull him out of his doldrums was his fiercest rival, Rey Misterio Jr.

[Rey Misterio (about to land on La Parka) says that WCW needs more wrestlers like Eddy Guerrero. Who would have ever thought he’d say something so complimentary about Eddy?]
ON DECEMBER 28, 1998, Eddy Guerrero teamed with Juventud Guerrera to defeat Billy Kidman and Rey Misterio Jr. in a tag team match at the Baltimore Arena. The match was aired on WCW Monday Nitro, and the only thing notable about the match was what happened four days later … and what happened half a year later.
Four days later, on New Year’s Day, Eddy Guerrero was involved in a serious car accident in Florida. Although the injuries he suffered were never considered career-threatening, he did sustain a broken hip socket, a punctured liver, and a shattered shin and calf. He spent a few days in the hospital, then he went home and prepared to begin his strenuous rehabilitation.
These two events are notable because, from December 28, 1998, until May 30, 1999, Eddy Guerrero didn’t go near a wrestling ring with the intent to compete. He absolutely did not wrestle a single match. There was no reason to believe that, when Eddy returned on May 31, his feud with Rey Misterio Jr. wouldn’t be as hot as it had been before the accident.
“”I’d like to thank Eric Bischoff for continuing to pay me while I was out,” Guerrero told the fans at the Astrodome in Houstin, Texas. “Without him, I couldn’t have fed my family.”
[Guerrero (also about to take down La Parka) was initially surprised when Misterio reached out to him in friendship. Given all the bad things he did to Rey in the past, who could blame him for being suspicious?]
He didn’t mention Rey Misterio Jr. He didn't have to. By that time, Misterio and Guerrero already had an agreement, an understanding, and a new respect for each other. That new respect would eventually make Misterio and Guerrero teammates with Billy Kidman in The Filthy Animals, who aren’t at all like their name implies. Actually, they might be the finest collection of wrestlers ever assembled in one clique.
“I learned about a lot of things during those five or six months when I couldn’t wrestle, and one of those things I learned was who cares about me and who doesn’t,” Guerrero revealed. “Eric Bischoff? Believe it or not, he cared about me. Rey Misterio, too. Who would have thought that, Let me tell you–just before I went into rehab, I was down. I was really depressed, but then one day the phone rang and it was Rey, of all people.”
Their conversation started off like this (translated from Spanish to English):
Misterio: Listen, buddy, I know you’re down. I know what this is like. I went through the same thing a few years ago with my knee. I know what you’re thinking. You’re wondering whether it’s worth it. But you’re one of the greatest wrestlers in the world. It’s definitely worth it. I thought I couldn't do it, either, but I did it. Now you’ve gotta do it, too.
Guerrero: What the heck do you care if I come back or not?
Misterio: (laughing) Because WCW needs more wrestlers like you. Besides, I’m still not done kicking your butt!
[Blitzkrieg gets blitzed by Misterio, who says that he’s admired Guerrero’s ability and courage (if not his attitude and tactics).]
According to Guerrero, the conversation lasted about another 15 minutes. After about five minutes, Guerrero and Misterio started talking kike best friends. Guerrero kept asking questions about rehab. Misterio related his experiences. When the phone call ended, Guerrero wondered two things: How’d Misterio get his phone number, and what was he really up to? But when Misterio called several more times over the next few months, just to see how his rehab was coming along, Guerrero became convinced that Misterio was sincere.
“Why’d I do it?” Misterio said. “Eddy asked me the same thing, and I told him: because there aren't many wrestlers like him in the world, and it would be a shame to have one less. Besides, even though we were rivals, I always admired his ability and courage. Hey, he’s like me, a smaller guy who overcame all the obstacles. In the back of my mind, I always thought me, Eddy, and Kidman belong together on the same side.”
The Filthy Animals have been an impressive team. At Fall Brawl ‘99, Kidman, Misterio, and Guerrero defeated Vampiro and The Insane Clown Posse in a sensational six-man match. A few weeks earlier, The Filthy Animals beat Barry and Kendall Windham and Bobby Duncum Jr. in another six-man match, even though the Windhams and Duncum had a huge height and weight advantage.
[As Guerrero flies through the air with the greatest of ease to deliver a dropkick against La Parka, it’s almost impossible to imagine he was sidelined with an injury for half of 1999!]
“What it comes down to it [Misterio] was there when I needed him,” Guerrero said. “Then when I came back, I guess it was in late-May, early-June, he was one of the first guys there to greet me, and we started talking. Yeah, we wrestled against each other a few times after that, but it was more a friendly thing, not the blood rivalry that used to exist. Hey, I’m not saying we’ll never wrest each other again. If he gets the cruiserweight title back, you’re damn right I’d want a piece of him. But it’s different. Before, I wanted to humiliate him and take his mask. The next time, I’d just want to beat him, like friends.”
A bond has formed. Misterio and Guerrero are no longer rivals.
They might even be on the way to becoming blood brothers.
[Misterio and Guerrero once had a very bitter and very ugly rivalry (left and right). Today, they are team members in The Filthy Animals, and have newfound respect for each other.]
