i feel like a lot of fandoms pride themselves on being gayer than the source material but have they considered being less racist and less misogynistic than the source material as well . could be revolutionary

One thing that stands out to me about BSD’s narrative is the pure ambiguity of Dazai’s past. A lot of media with a mysterious but central character like him would drop little hints here and there about their history, but BSD doesn’t. Our chronological knowledge of Dazai starts with him meeting Mori, and we don’t know anything before that. I feel like that ambiguity sort of helps the “vibe” of Dazai’s character, but it still is strange.
The interesting thing stemming from this is that I rarely ever see people theorize about where he came from, what pushed him to his suicidal mindset in the first place, etc, but it makes sense. Like I said, we as a fandom have basically nothing to work on here aside from guesswork

The "never allow anyone to mistreat you" and "no one can hurt you without your permission" type of advice seems horribly ignorant of the power dynamics involved in a lot of abusive situations. "Just not allowing it" won't always be a safe option or an option at all, and that of course doesn't mean that any kind of abuse should be treated as acceptable or inherently unavoidable, but it does mean that we need to stop shaming abuse survivors for "allowing themselves to be mistreated" or whatever.
