NCT U’S Doyoung Appreciation Post
Since NCT U’s debut, I have seen people ranting about different members and their talents, but I have personally seen VERY FEW comments or fanpages solely dedicated to Doyoung. Yes, you may retaliate saying they’re a new group, or even Taeil is a lesser-seen member of NCT U, but remember- SM has promoted all the members, and imo Doyoung + Taeil unequally. Taeil has, however, gotten his own solo and enough pre-debut hype. Doyoung, even though he was an MC on Music Bank for quite some time, has probably not been able to garner the same kind of attention. Although I’m clueless about Korean fans, I definitely do know us international fans have not given him enough love post-debut.
First of all, let’s start with Doyoung’s vocals. He has always been one of the main vocalists, and his voice is very unique for the following reasons:
1. He has a slightly nasal tinge to his voice, which most people can’t discern upon first listen.
2. He can alternate exceptionally well between bass and tenor. A lot of other people can do this, too, but it’s usually present while speaking, and not singing.
3. He sounds very similar to the actual track when he performs live, which probably means there is very less or no autotune used as a corrective measure on his voice.
4. His Beauty & the Beast performance- (x) Notice the sustained high note at the 1:24 mark and immediate falsetto after that. Keep in mind that he was sustaining powerful notes prior to that, too. That takes quite some lung power.
5. All his little ad-libs in 7th Sense [he’s always the person that’s softer in volume and higher in pitch, you may have to focus to listen closer].
(x up to the 0:54 mark. It’s a little softer now, so you may wanna concentrate- he’s the one in the bg going ‘oh, whoa’)

6. The way he harmonises with the other members. Personally, his harmony with Taeyong and Jaehyun just makes me wanna kms. (x) (x) (x) (x) (x)

2. The way he laughs, and the habit he has of either clapping, or covering his mouth while he’s laughing.

7. That super cute habit he has where he’s startled by cameras and looks like an extremely unbearably adorable deer caught in headlights.
7. Can we also take a moment to appreciate beanie! and redhead! Doyoung?
He looks SO cute with the oversized tee and the black beanie and his short orange hair falling into his eyes. That streak of white in his fringe was simply genius. I’d say someone needs give their stylist a raise.

Lastly, his personality. Here are some miscellaneous facts due to which my heart simply melts:-
1. He’s a big softie, because he loves Valentine’s day, had his first crush in the 5th grade, and was in a band in high school called ‘Heart Track’. Also, he has a doll named Jippong that he cuddles with while sleeping. His nickname is Dotokki (Doyoung + rabbit in Korean) because K-fans think his eyes look like rabbits’.
2. He has other hidden talents, such as playing the flute and being able to sing trot songs. Doyoung also won 1st place at the Gyeonggi Youth Arts Festival in 2013. He mentioned that he’d like to be a baker, so he’s presumably skilled at baking, too.
3. Doyoung likes it when it’s drizzling, or it’s spring, and his favourite colour is blue. He likes dandelions, too. Apart from it being exactly the same preferences as mine, I can imagine him running onto a field wet with rain, with the sun slowly cracking through the clouds, picking a dandelion and watching the pieces float away. Trust me, that picture is beautiful.
4. Doyoung is experimental and bold when he’s determined. He looks up to Kyungsoo a lot- he adores the way he sings, acts and even the way he speaks. He wants to sing a duet with him, if possible. Doyoung hopes to be a singer that people want to listen to, and is constantly finding ways to improve his singing abilities by being unique. He said he wants to try being a radio DJ someday.
5. Despite him being confident and focussed about his goals, his members say he becomes nervous in interviews, and tends to pass questions on to other members to calm their nerves. Unintentionally, he gives the other members enough spotlight and directs the conversation if it lags. This is crucial for most interviews and sacrificing attention on such an important forum like a broadcast is NOT a sacrifice a lot of idols are willing to make, and this needs appreciation.

Therefore, for all these reasons, Kim Dongyoung has become my bias in NCT U. I know I may just seem like a rant-y fangirl that’s losing her head over another boy, but I felt this was needed. A lot. And yes, I may add tags of members that are generally unrelated to this post, but I want this to gain attention solely to educate people on how amazing this squishy marshmallow is.
I just really hope people realise his potential and worth and even if they don’t stan him, appreciate him as a valid and important member of NCT.
