Many people in the comments are saying “trauma”, but this is actually a very normal occurrence. It’s called Childhood Amnesia, and it’s a process which, as the brain reorganizes itself for cognitive thought that is developed in late childhood, it changes the Accessibility of those memories during recall. Many childhood memories are available to the person, but they will not be remembered during regular recall activity, you have to “trick” your brain into remembering with different tactics.

This is because there are two parts to memories - their encoding and their recall. The encoding determines their availability, their recall determines their accessibility. The reason why trauma memory and childhood amnesia are different is in this distinction. Trauma memory is often encoded differently, bypassing to the limbic system where it is stored as intrinsic memory. It can’t be recalled because it was never encoded. Childhood amnesia, however, seems to indicate that the memories are encoded, but we lose access to them as we age. This is most likely due to the development of brain structures that fundamentally change our encoding and recall of memory as we get older.

This is an important distinction, because trauma memory is “stored in the body”, i.e. you get triggers that send your body into a cascade of uncontrollable feelings, sensations and reactions. Whereas childhood memories won’t generally do that, they are just recalled at odd times with odd associations.

My thing is it really depends on the circumstances. Like many people on tumblr are young, especially when this post was posted. It’s odd if you’re a teenager and you don’t remember most or any of your childhood. There’s also a point where not remembering anything is a structural dissociation thing. Plus, traumatic memories can be forgotten and remembered via the same mechanism as normal memories (not suppressed thru some process where they need to be dug out thru hypnosis like was sometimes promoted in the past). It’s always struck me as slightly disingenuous to say that people talking about trauma who describe severe amnesia of most of their life are just misunderstanding normal memory loss over time. Like, yes, don’t freak out about the normal process of forgetting things over time or assume all trauma is “suppressed” but also yeah. Some people have extremely severe dissociation as a result of trauma to the point of clinically significant amnesia

People are having surgeries, for which they were on waitlists for years, suddenly cancelled. Hormones no longer covered, their clinicians no longer able to prescribe them. Considering in some states Catholic-owned healthcare organizations make up to a third of the market, as it were, this is a HUGE issue.

idk that the *existence* of the My Toys Have Anxiety narrative points to something uniquely bad about the present condition compared to the past. children's literature has, for as long as it's existed, acted as a release valve for the unfair pressures/expectations of childhood before resentment manifests as destructive behavior. and it does double duty to teach (or subvert, depending) the moral lessons preferred by the dominant societal powers of the region/era.

but children's lives have never been separate from the world, as much as we love to pretend otherwise. and examining these media narratives gives us a lot of information about the particular conditions of childhood in the moment that cultural artifact was created. always has!

the book Racial Innocence by Robin Bernstein explores this subject really well imo. the concept of "scriptive things" has been rattling around in my head ever since i read it.
