Work towards travel campaign mock up 1
Mockup from earlier editorial project, I love the use of colour here and dynamic composition. I feel this was not fitting for the animation I have been working on, as it was an emotive piece and the directer wanted to limit visual metaphor as a lot of this was already in the poetry, and there is a fine line between showing and telling and giving away almost too much -Â we are still working on finding this balance as it is a WIP.Â
IÂ really struggled to do something that was directed and in many ways more cinematic as it is out of my comfort zone - but I think it is important to push myself in that direction as improving my animation and knowledge of this area may open me up to many exciting job opportunities.
However, these dynamic illustrations are something I definitely want to take forwards, it helps me realise that just because I work two dimensionally, my work does not necessarily always have to be flat. I think it is good to find a a balance as too much of one thing can be a complete overload.
Notes on this include:
- extend the old woman’s room so it doesn’t break the geography established in the first shot
-make the transition through the wall more obvious we go through a wall - maybe so brichwork or a slight 3d element?
- less of a wiggle for the baby
Notes from meeting last night
rough scene of parcel drop. this I will have to change massively, as the director has requested I change the characters, the windows, and the man dropping the parcel to him simply holding it and waving
New imagining of the view into the room, far more dynamic composition, intially having more of a foreground etc. The protagonist of this scene has also been redesigned to suit the profile better
Initial man in room - notes on age, we want the character to look more dishevelled, a middle aged man, suffering from marital problems. roughs for a redesign of character will be submitted to Joe shortly
Don’t touch your face.
amendments to colour, depth, detail, as instructed by director
Never ending onion skins.

Amendments to face, using frame by fram can make my work more expression are. I like to normally do this by the gestures of the characters, but this animation calls for more subtleties.
Darker colours, woman needs to look older
‘Through one sits a woman 90 or so’
Roughs animation 1 - off colours, too pale
Through on sits a woman 90 or so
Shot list notes from phone call 11th April. Will be contacting a compositor in the morning to see if this can be pushed further, but whether or not they decide to be unloved, we are excited to see where our skills take us, and what we can achieve even within limitations.
Street Track for Camera to move around, colour palette negotiated with commissioner. Cold, muted colour, areas of interest can be brought to life with colours considerate to the actions/ emotions. RETROSPECTIVE NOTES - colours are good, but neighbour hood should look more friendly while maitnaining visually exciting. Wait to see if we are getting a compositor on board, before editing, so as to ensure files are correct.
Soup smile, frame by frame. Visual metaphor for poem animation. Playing with a mixture of key framing and stop motion should allow for a more diverse, emotive animation
