Dearest Hyunie,

My Princess! I hope you have been well since we last spoke.. I miss you dearly. Things have begun to look up back here at home! I have been allowed back in training for the crown, and they are no longer pushing the war. It is mentioned occassionally, but as I brush it off they drop it. I am so excited to tell you that, as they have accepted me back into the community, you of course may return. I kindly explained that you are not likely to resume your role as Queen-to-be, as you have responsibilities where you now live. I decided not to go into detail with it, as I’m not sure they would react well to.. offspring that do not belong to the royal family. Perhaps, in time.. when real progress is made, it may be more acceptable. Your mother misses you as much as I do, and I think she has been trying to feed me double to make up for your absence. I’m about to become quite plump.. You must save me! Please, will you at least visit? I was intending to send a care package along with this message, but it occured to me that if I instead tempted you with the comforts of home, you would have to return at least for something delicious in your tummy. Ah, you must be wanting to smack my smugness clean off my face by now. Anyway, please give your reply to the messenger I have sent, and I will have preparations made.

I'm sending this via your messenger that you've sent. I'm so relieved to hear from you! Please send my mother my regards until I'm able to return.. which I hope to be soon since this is all so very temping. Would you please return to take me there? Or should I ask your messenger? Anyway, I'm quite pleased to hear that things are going smoothly there. I know you'll make a wonderful king when it's your time to ctake the crown. And I'm sure you'll be able to find a suitable queen amongst out people. Unless you'd still be willing to accept me though I suppose I'm not the best choice anymore. Anyway. I do look forward to coming home for a short period of time. Maybe we could revisit our old places that we used to frequent. Just for old times sake. Hopefully I'll be seeing you soon.

On June 25, 1950, the Korean War began when some 75,000 soldiers from the North Korean People’s Army poured across the 38th parallel, the boundary between the Soviet-backed Democratic People’s Republic of Korea to the north and the pro-Western Republic of Korea to the south. This invasion was the first military action of the Cold War. By July, American troops had entered the war on South Korea’s behalf. As far as American officials were concerned, it was a war against the forces of international communism itself. After some early back-and-forth across the 38th parallel, the fighting stalled and casualties mounted with nothing to show for them. Meanwhile, American officials worked anxiously to fashion some sort of armistice with the North Koreans. The alternative, they feared, would be a wider war with Russia and China–or even, as some warned, World War III. The fighting ended on 27 July 1953, when the armistice agreement was signed. The agreement established a new border between the Koreas near the 38th Parallel and created the Korean Demilitarized Zone, a 2.5-mile-wide fortified buffer zone between them. Border incidents continue to the present. In all, some 5 million soldiers and civilians lost their lives during the war.

The war has been seen both as a civil war and as a proxy conflict between the United States and the Soviet Union, one of many that would mark the Cold War. While not directly committing forces to the conflict, the Soviet Union provided strategic planning, weapons and material aid to both the North Korean and Chinese armies. From a military science perspective, the Korean War was initially fought using the mobile operations of World War II, but after the first year the conflict settled down into a holding operation while an armistice was argued over, and the static tactics of World War I trench warfare became the norm for the last two years of the conflict. The war also saw the first combat between jet aircraft, such as the F-86 Sabre used by the UN and the MiG-15 used by the Chinese, in warfare.
