Rachel’s feet were dangling off the edge of the roof. This had been a frequent spot for her in the past to get away and breathe. But where this would have been a desperate attempt to get away - tonight, it was comfortable. A space of safety where Rachel felt like she was allowed to exist. And Kitty’s contribution only cemented that feeling. “Anywhere?” Rachel was looking toward the stars, her voice as distant as the destinations she was considering.

“Does it still feel like I have a foot out the door?” She looked at Kitty fully now, pulling herself out of the daydream she had allowed herself to get lost in. “Because I don’t.” She hoped she didn’t have to say it, but for all the things she had hoped she didn’t need to explain or say - she had left too much written between the lines, hoping that Kitty would catch the hints and the feelings left behind in the fragments. “If I get to pick where I call home, I think this is a good place.” With good people.

Kitty followed Rachel’s gaze to the stars. She’d been there often enough, had fallen into text book upon text book of information about them, but that wasn’t what made them feel like home. Her fascination with them was genuine far beyond the woman who sat next to her, but they weren’t home. That had little to do with the nitrogen or hydrogen or the oxygen or...or the explosions of creation, the swirls of galaxies and possibilities. What made it home was how all of it could be contained in the shape of one person.

“Mhm.” She hummed a quiet affirmation. With Rachel looking up, breaking the silence felt wrong. Quiet wasn’t Kitty’s best skill unless she was brooding; it was something of a marvel she’d managed to sit still long enough for the silence to surround them in the first place.

(It was something about not settling since the time she was thirteen. It was something about Rachel and stars and making homes out of at least one of them.)

But then Rachel was looking at her, and Kitty hadn’t realized she’d needed the reassurance until Rachel was offering it. They’d felt almost permanent once before, when they had a lighthouse and a team. Then Rachel was gone), and Kitty was left behind, and maybe she’d always expect to lose the things she held onto the tightest. Maybe she’d been trying not to squeeze too tight lest history repeat itself. But then, but then Rachel was looking at her, and Kitty dared to hope. “It’s a pretty good place, right here.” On this rooftop, with this person.

She looked down at her clasped hands she suddenly couldn’t keep still any more, fingers clasping and unclasping. “With you.” If there was ever a moment Kitty wished Rachel would use that mental connection they had it was that moment. She looked back up at Rachel, smiling just around the edges. She’d fought the Shi’ar and the Brood in space; sometimes she knew how to be brave. “It’s a pretty good place right here, with you.”

Simon was in over his head. Actually, that was being a little vague, because Simon had been in over his head. He’d been in over his head since a magic ring from space broke him out of Guantanamo Bay and signed him up to work alongside other people with magic rings from space, and he’d always known that, but… Well. Knowing it and being reminded of it were pretty different things, weren’t they?

There was a potential alien invasion going on, with slime people around every corner, and he was pretty sure he was the only one doing anything about it. And he was still sleeping on a mattress in space, because Sira wasn’t that mad anymore but his pride wouldn’t let him ask for her sofa back anyway. And he was pretty much broke. And — And everything.

Sighing, he glanced up at Kitty. “I need…” A job. A place to live. An army to help me fight a bunch of slime weirdos. A therapist, probably. “A cup of coffee. You in?”

Kitty wasn’t sure what she’d been expecting. There was a pause that she filled with a million options before he finally finished his sentence: help with some galactic threat, a hug (he’d never ask but she sort of wanted to give him one), something fun and distracting like bowling or a trip to space, advice. When he finally said ‘coffee,’ it felt a little anti-climactic. He looked like he needed a bit more than coffee, but if coffee was what he was going to ask for, she was going to get him the best coffee NYC had to offer.

“Sure, I know a dive.” Or Genosha? Maybe Simon would like to visit Genosha. Kitty adored New York; she’d found home not too far from it at the age of thirteen, and grew to love it for all its gritty charm. It wasn’t Chicago, but it was home nonetheless. She tried not to think about how they’d have to cross the water to get to Genosha. That there were international borders, and rules, and oceans between. 

“Or I could show you a place in Genosha?” She asked, anyway. Because ferries be damned, she was going to share her new home with her friends.

     Raven had the habit of appearing out of nowhere and blending into the darkness . It was just something she was used to doing ever since she was young . No one every really knew she was there and if they did , which was rare , they had keen eyes .

     Walking about the city , in her hand she had some of the apartment listings . Having been here three month , already , staying in hotels wasn’t a permanent home . Eyes soon looked up at a poster about the accords and a graffiti regarding mutants . “ Seems like I missed a lot … ” She muttered .

New York City had changed so much in the course of a couple years, and yet so much remained the same. There was a safe haven in the bay, something beautiful and grand and impossible, where Kitty could walk down the streets and never once see graffiti cursing her very existence. Part of her would always hope she could say the same about NYC some day.

Maybe she should’ve stayed on Genosha. Maybe she didn’t want to. Because she still hoped.

She was shaking a bottle of black spray paint and tracing the outline of a Bamf  when she noticed the woman walking up. “Oh! This is, this isn’t what it looks like. I’m just– wait, you missed...this?” The Accords had been all over the news. The siege had been all over the news. There was still rubble, some businesses still had ‘closed’ plastered across cracked windows. “Lucky you.”
