There isn’t a soul in the entire complex who doesn’t know Ky Danvers: the boy who sentenced his own brother, Kole, as well as twelve other Divergents, to death. Everyone remembers the cold look in his eyes as he stood in front of them, flanked by two guards, while they each took a bullet to the back of the head, and everyone thinks they know everything there is to know about the obvious psychopath. Truth be told, they couldn’t even begin to understand the true innerworkings of Ky’s psyche, but nobody outside his few friends in Dauntless cares to look. So he plays into the role that’s been created for him: menacing looks thrown at anyone who gets within fifteen feet of him, acts of aggression if the looks don’t work; it’s speculated that he once sent an Amity girl away in tears with a mere twitch of his eyebrow. But that facade comes in handy during initiation—as trainer for the transfers, he’s able to weed out the weak links early on.
Underneath his hard exterior, Ky has a very dry sense of humor; half the time, people can’t tell when he’s being facetious or sincere. He’s always more at ease once he crosses the threshold of the Dauntless sector, where he doesn’t feel as though he needs to put on an act. He spends most of his free time training, both physically and mentally, to make sure he’s at the top of his game at all times. When you’re at the top of your initiate class, there’s always someone trying to knock you down, and Ky’s not about to let that happen. But every night, in the privacy of his room, he pulls out the list his brother gave him the night they were interrogated, with the names of every Divergent Kole had let slide under the radar. Though a majority of the names were crossed off after Ky was forced to give them up, he makes sure to keep an eye on the few that are left. As a Dauntless, it’s his duty to protect those who can’t protect themselves, and in honor of his brother’s dying wish, he’ll watch out for them until he takes his last breath.
APTITUDE TEST RESULTS: DAUNTLESS
Dauntless always meant something much more to Ky than chocolate cake and ziplining—though those were definitely perks. He always thought of the Dauntless title as something that must be earned, not just chosen, and it’s something he drills into every crop of initiates that walks through the training room doors. Bravery means more to him than anything else, even if that means just putting on a poker face while he listens to the whispers that seem to follow him wherever he goes. Dauntless is his home, and from the moment his blood sizzled on the black coals of his faction, he set out to prove that he deserved to be Dauntless. He still does, even after four years.
