Okay, a question about the No Wu AU, should I get rid of things like diagnosis and labels? It's been brought to my attention that it was offensive to say that Zane is autistic and that Jay is ADHD, I can see how my portrayal of such topics was shoddy in some spots, seeing as I am not a psychologist, should I go back and change any details pertaining to such depictions to remove the topic entirely? There's also another line of dialogue pertaining to Morro that I intend to change anyways. (Edit: just changed the Morro thing.)
Remove diagnostic thingsssss
Kick it
Keep it
I also meant you giving Morro the label of a disorder where people start writing off everything he says as irrelevant, whether or not he’s meant to have that.
Okay! So that one, I can see how that line of dialogue can be taken offensively and I will probably revise it whenever I get around to adding other changes.
I will note though that it isn't meant to be a proper diagnosis in that instance so much as it's intentionally just people throwing terms around to figure out why he's Like That. Ultimately, I'd boil it more down to a sandwich of he's an edgy 13 year old, he actually has been through something horrible and traumatic, but also he's still an edgy 13 year old, so he's all around not great at conveying his feelings. So statements like "I killed my parents," which he claims multiple times, get conflated with other things like the bit where he's talking about how happy people just aren't intelligent. The main takeaway is that he's a young teenager, young teens are cringe and say edgy things, and he isn't taken seriously because he tries to play up how dark and mysterious he is. So then the "solution" in a quick bit of dialogue is to try to slap a label on him to explain something about him, even if it's not the right label and the character in question saying it doesn't have the authority to give a diagnosis, in the same way some rando who just likes being clean and organized will go "omg I'm so OCD."
Anyways, when I was 14 I was friends with someone who I think definitely had something bad happen to her, but she sandwiched it between tales of how she almost got beaten up, how one friend died unrealistically getting crushed by a mall sign, how another friend died unrealistically in a lab explosion, like as time went on the tales grew taller and taller. But now that I'm older and I've looked back...while I still think most of the stories were lies, I think one specific bad event was real because it was a through line on nearly every other story, so now I hold a lot more sympathy for her now than I did back then. That's kinda how my approach to Morro is. He spouts so much bullshit, and it can be hard to bear with him, but eventually the truth will come out and he will be owed an apology. There's something going on there psychologically, but indeed, I am not qualified to label it properly, other than he's really defensive/closed off/reactive for a reason.
Oh and lastly, this is more of a joke than anything but I have to add it: in Japan they have a slang term for edgy adults that literally translates to "chronically 13 years old syndrome." There's a joke here somewhere. Something something ghost Morro being forever 13 lmao
Also, please don't take this response as aggressive or overly defensive, I do appreciate the feedback about how that one line could be seen as distasteful. I know sometimes when I get rambly it can unintentionally sound more mean than anything lol
I meant not acting like a psychologist by giving characters mental disorder labels. You can code them but if you can’t give a diagnosis don’t give a diagnosis.
Ah, understandable. I try not to, particularly if it's something that would develop over the story, i.e. PTSD or depression, but I will note that in regards to Zane being autistic and Jay having ADHD, it's because they resonate with me because I have undiagnosed neurodivergence. There's this post on my art blog which isn't specific to the No Wu AU but is about how I perceive Zane in general. I apologize if that comes off as offensive, I suppose I could go back and try to fix that.
I feel excitement about the prospct of the obsidian weapons being incorporated into the story.
idk how I wanna incorporate the obsidian weapons, I'll cross that bridge when I get there, but I am playing around in my head what to do with the memory loss subplot. Esp since I think it puts Dareth in an interesting position as a mediator since he's dating Ronin.
I’m assuming Chima won’t be an influence until they do something with whatever is going on there? They might remake it simce like the original Ninjago it wasn’t meant for an expanded world and it’s unpopular and old enough that most people wouldn’t miss it, not to mention the Tigers in the Chima show were orange as opposed to Ras and Zilvar being black and white.
Yes and no. I have alluded to Chima in some chapters, particularly in relation to the serpentine. I'd like to put more emphasis on it, but it's not anything that would be worthy of a whole arc. If I were to do anything more, it'd be either because DR did more and that gives me inspiration, or because I thought of something really funny to do with it, but I'm content with the mere existence of this *other realm* that the Serpentine got dishomed from almost haunting the narrative in a way, what could've been, where they should be, culture lost, etc.
I should also note that I just have a weird relationship with Chima. I have nostalgia for the hype and the marketing and the whole two month period between Ninjago's "end" and Chima's beginning, but not the show itself? And I wasn't allowed to collect lego as a kid so the toys also just don't hold much nostalgia for me other than wanting the Speedorz. Idk, it was hard for it to live up to Ninjago when I was a kid, and when revisiting it all as an adult, Nexo Knights was better at tickling my brain and sticking with me. This is all to say that 1. I don't think about how to rewrite Chima as much as I should (one thing at a time ig) and 2. despite all that, I really wanna see DR just have like one episode to give us a status update on the characters, where are they now, etc. Like seeing old friends, even if they weren't my faves.
Following up from my last message about plot progression you could wait on Skybound and deal with Jay earlier and just have Skybound deepen their relationship which would also be nice since Nadakahn wouldn’t be a creep and I don’t even think they were thinking about that when they came up with it. If you feel like you still need some sort of plot between major arcs I would like to recommend that of course you should finish with the Stone Army and Bounty first since you started those already but after that you could either A: come up with original stuff, Ninjago is a big place, B: have Borg Tower actually be operational (this is a joke I mean it would be an option it’s just not meant to be offensive) which could lead into Borg realizing he has Elemental Masters on his payroll and that they can do more than just stand around thus leading him to associate magic and destiny with magic and and destiny and sending them off on treasure hunts for artifacts which could get him to build the vaults, finally C: they become vigilantes, possibly either because Ultra Violet and her gang won’t leave them alone and they managed to get connections, or because Chen’s criminal empire had a few loose strings to tie up that Skylor wants help with, or if they’re treasure hunting they help people out or start learning espionage/stealth and just find they like helping people at random, possibly meeting Ronin on either of those last two or the treasure hunting. What do you think? Is it too many ideas? I’m sorry if it is, I’m just a little obsessed, as most people would say.
I used Skybound as an example for what I'm kinda chomping at the bit for. But I won't rush into it. I will say though, whatever's leftover of Chen's empire is quite horribly entangled with the Time Twins, and the Time Twins are perhaps a bit horribly entangled with Morro, and Nadakhan is perhaps in there somewhere too. So it'll be a minute before I hit all of that. But I am slowly setting up some of those conflicts, i.e. Morro being a little detached from the rest of the team, Jay struggling romantically, Skylor trying to get her life together.
Ronin is also in my back pocket, he was teased in like, two chapters. It irks me that Shadow of Ronin isn't canon, so I may do something with that, but it's a ways off. I just know that the key to more Ronin is actually for me to do a solo Dareth chapter at some point.
Borg Tower will come into play when there's more downtime. It'll be more tied to Nya's Samurai X stuff. Also a Zane storyline (shocker) but that's way down the line and certainly one I don't intend to spoil. I think it'll actually be presented as more of just another safe space, similar to the junkyard.
And no worries tossing ideas out! I can't say I'd use all or even any of them (as is the flowing nature of my writing), but I'm always curious to hear where people think the story could go, sometimes it gives me a new key to a problem plot.
Are you going to use a combination of fluff, training arcs, exploration arcs, and character development arcs to space out the time between major plots? It would make sense and also allow for a timeline that doesnmt have a decade’s worth of events in six months.
Pretty much! I call them bridge chapters sometimes, when I feel like actually I do need to put something more quiet and beneign between major plot beats, because it just feels right. Some of it is character development, but imo it also gives me time to map out and set up the next arc, put down those crumbs, etc.
Please don’t rush into Skybound, that would probably end up running into pitfalls like in the actual show just not as bad. Take your time, even if it takes 30 years just to get to Possession or Hands of Time as long as it turns out well and you keep your life intact we’ll be happy.
Oh yeah, I don't plan on rushing haha. Some events may be moved up though, as seen with how I moved ToE up. It just depends on when's the best time to jam a plotline in.
Sorry about coming off wrong, I wasn’t calling the Lava a slow burn. I like slow burn, I was just saying that slow burn shouldn’t be turned into a bad romance for the sake of dragging it out, which is the opposite of what you’re doing, good on you.
You're good! Apologies if I came off a bit aggressive, I was trying to explain because I know my plots can get a bit meandering haha
Something something getting into King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard because I now own a patch of the pic of Skeletor and his crew making music bc I love He-man and I don't wanna be a poser by having merch for a band I don't listen to
Despite what you said about the Lava dynamic in your fic, it somehow comes across as the most pleasant to read out of all of the main ninja ships present, but most of that is from their difficulties and since no romance should be held off for arbitrary reasons I agree that a salvaged Skylor would probably be better. Also the scene where Kai had his bi awakening and their interactions in the slither pit when Kai learned spinjitzu were my favorite but that’s beside the point.
I wouldn't say that Cole and Kai's development is getting held off on for arbitrary reasons, I'm just waiting for the best point to get to it due to other goings on. It's more of a slow burn. An elephant in the room they have yet to fully tackle. Kai has his own issues, Cole has his own issues (which he partially blames on Kai), amidst other issues, I set it up and by golly I'm gonna commit to it lol. Most of it is still going according to what little bit of their relationship I had planned since 2022 (VERY awkward attempts at dating) just now I have an end to it in mind. Geo existing didn't make me put anything off per see.
Plus right now...romance isn't the biggest factor since I'm slowly climbing out of the fluff chapters. A lot of what's coming up, there will be romantic moments but by in large it'll be in kind of a "hey uh this is a bad time" sorta way. Pixal maybe came up once in the last 4 chapters or so? Jay and Nya...are loving but also slowly inching up to something slightly toxic that I'm planning. (The fact that admittedly the fic doesn't pass the Betchel test WILL come up and it will be very bad for Jay since he's been glued to Nya's side for like, 15 chapters. If their relationship feels suffocating then good, I'm doing my job. Idk how many people picked up on that lol. So atp it kinda transcends romance into some other thing after a while.) Kai is off with Wu. But yes...there will be tension when he returns combined with all the other little stuff. The fact that it's amidst the Lloyd Issuesâ„¢ adds to the tension.
The real issue is just what I'm writing at a snail's pace at the moment due to being very busy. (Working full time retail for the summer, then normally school months I have college, nannying, and a retail job to take care of.) During the first year of the fic, I didn't have the retail job so I had a lot more time to write, which is how I wrote 30 chapters in that timespan. I've gotten another 30 chapters done in another 3 years. So the delay is just when I hit certain plot beats. I also wanna rush to Skybound but ah, I must be patient. So assuming the same pace...idk, expect the Merge in like 15 years. /hj (I really wanna get to Geo and the DR kids tho)
Far as Kai settling down with Skylor...like I said, if I can think of a funny reason then maybe they can stay together, the current plot beat in my mind is that they try it out for one date, years from now, closer to anything more SOG related in the timeline. (Their platonic relationship is tenuous at the current point of the fic.) I think the date (shockingly) goes well, even, but doesn't result in a romantic relationship due to different needs. So this paragraph is either a spoiler or an accidental red herring if it's read in the future lol.
I don't have everything mapped out in intense detail but much of the plotbeats I wanna use have a pin in it until the right moment to drop it in. Be it Lava, or fixing the Bounty, or what happened to Jay's mom, or the Dark Island stuff. That last one, we are nearing it's time to be sprinkled in. Everything has its time. Cole and Kai will have their cute little dinner date, it just won't be while Stone Warriors are roaming.
Newcomer here, I must say that while it objectively should be tagged I must say that the lack of tag managed to get me into lavashipping, very fun job.
Yeah, that's my bad. I didn't tag it due to how ambiguous their relationship is/will be, and I don't want people to feel like it's a Lava fic and get their hopes up. (Iirc I think I didn't even tag Jaya or Pixane until like, 3 years into this fic for similar reasons.) Esp after a certain point, if you're on AO3 and 60 chapters into my Ninjago rewrite fic...you're just along for the ride at that point, shipping be damned lol
Also thank you, call it an extension of how my eyes got opened up to Lava back around 2022 or so lol
Hello! Someone from No Wu AU here! It’s been a while since I read it and I’m going to be busy soon so I won’t have the time to reread the thing, but I just have a small question: is the Merge going to happen in the AU and is moltenshipping going to be a thing if it happens? Even if the Merge doesn’t happen would they still meet up with Geo at some point and then Cole or Cole and Kai fall in love with him?
Hi! So tbh I like to keep a lot of things cryptic but this one I don't mind spoiling just because it'll probably take me forever to get to this point and I don't want people to feel baited.
Cole and Kai aren't endgame. The first 30 or so chapters were written before we knew Geo existed. People kept commenting that those early chapters gave off Lava vibes, and I rolled with it because I didn't care for Kailor much at the time. (Tbh I don't really get super into shipping discourse, I mostly stick to canon, but also I'm not opposed to non canon ships, so when I can bend it a bit... yeah I'll ball lol. So that kinda explains some of my philosophy there.) Also a thing I like to say as a tad bit of a joke is that the No Wu AU is less of a fix it fic and more of a break it fic lol, so lots of time I like to go with what'd be messy and/or funny. (A good example of me doing this was moving up Jay becoming a serpentine just to clash with Lou's visit.) So Cole and Kai were definitely a shakey pairing and hinged on the drama, whether or not I was gonna have them as endgame was up in the air.
Anyhowsit now Geo exists and I'm gonna be honest, I want him with Cole. Kai and Cole def got some things to work out though, the question is more just when I'll get to that point, because at this rate, it'll be a few years before I hit The Merge.
So at some point there'll be a Lava date and/or awkward attempts to maintain the relationship
Kai and Skylor may have a second together (I like them together more now than when I started the fic due to conversations I've had about how to salvage them in canon.) but I think for certain character reasons, esp this version of Skylor, they probably won't be endgame unless I can think of a funny enough reason to justify it
Idk who Kai would end up with other than those two
Cole has Geo, I have so much I wanna explore with Geo, and I think it'd just be interesting to explore because it's such a later point in their lives, so most immaturity has died down. I think a major wrench in the Lava I present in the AU is that Kai is a bit more outwardly immature (saying stupid shit) and Cole is more inwardly immature (he doesn't know what he wants exactly out of a relationship.)
Also tangential to this convo, Cole and Jay get a bit more queer platonic somewhere down the line uwu
sincerely the new he-man movie made me bawl my eyes out with adam sitting in his room and the walls covered in drawings while he contemplates life. i had my artwork hanging up in my room. i had to get rid of all of it to be more adult over the last few months, and i think that combined with other things from my family has killed a lot of my creative drive, so the whole idea of "recapturing the magic" really touched my heart and i need a minute to process it
Getting older is weird sometimes because like, when I was 12 I had a crush on Casey in TMNT 2012 and thought it was weird that people were into super buff 2003 Casey, but now at 24 I see 2012 as a child and am indeed all into 2003 Casey, and then I see people (I assume tweens) crushing on 2012 Casey and I'm like ???? but then I remember...I was 12 once too
in case anyone ever wondered why i'm so annoying about the racial coding of lego men, i just wanna point out that when i was a kid i distinctly recall my dad watching ninjago with me and asking if Zane is black and albino orrrrr. Anyways I was just watching Thundercats with him and he was trying to figure out what race Lion'o is bc to my dad he definitely isn't white
