snk really does take place in the future

okay so this fact is something that i figured was... supposed to be OBVIOUS (given the title of the first episode: To You, 2,000 Years in the Future), but i was never certain and it wasn't something that anyone seemed to be talking about on my dashboard! 

so the question: where is the actual evidence that snk takes place in the future? well. remember that hange named the two titans "sawney" and "bean". now take this with a grain of salt, because hange's long naming spiel was not in the manga, but...

now let's run over to wikipedia, which says... 

"Alexander "Sawney" Bean was the semi-mythical head of a 48-member clan in 15th- or 16th-century Scotland"

i feel like they're trying to MAKE IT MORE OBVIOUS here. 

this is only one tiny piece of anecdotal evidence, but. let's take a look at the implications it would bring if snk DID in fact take place in the future. 

1. the year in snk is given as 850. something major must have happened to make people reset the calendar to a new era. we know it WASN'T the appearance of hostile titans, because records say they showed up 100~ years ago. 

2. something happened that threw humanity back into the medieval ages, with no remainders of advanced technology left (within the walls, at least. for all we know, advanced societies could still be existing in other parts of the world). 

3. this would allow more room for the theory that titans were created by scientists rather than being of some supernatural/magical origin. remember that titans draw their energy from sunlight (photosynthesis).

etc. etc. this is just my incoherent ramblings and i'm sure other people have already made good points on this topic but eyyy. what if, right?

He didn't believe in God, gold, or glory; but he did believe in the Scouting Legion. He might have been an adult -- with a jaw that was more angular than the baby-faced cheeks he had as a kid, and with a temper that had slightly mellowed out instead of being a volatile wildfire -- but still he was young enough to cling to slivers of immaturity and naive ideals. The officers of the Scouting Legion were still his heroes, and having the honor of bearing the Wings of Freedom on his uniform filled him with pride.

Even with their heavy failures, Eren's faith rested with the soldiers. If he allowed himself to lose that faith, surely it would compromise him greatly in the future. There wasn't room for brooding doubts; especially not when they were on missions, as they were now.

The sun was beginning to rise, which meant that the titans would soon become active. The more abnormal ones were probably already alert and engaged in their mindless wanderings. Thankfully the scouts had managed to set up a sort of perimeter. They had left Rose for Maria the previous night, guiding their horses by lantern light. Considering the titans were naturally sluggish at night, to Eren it only made sense to head out on a mission at sunset. They could cover a lot of ground while easily avoiding and escaping the titans.

They had stopped in a small village to rest and regroup. The titans would be attracted to the gathering of people, so they needed to get moving again quickly. The purpose of the mission was just to survey the general spread of titans within Wall Maria. It also served as sort of test-run for when they would set out on an embarkment to reach Eren's house; to reach the basement that might be holding their salvation. An actual test-run. Not like before, when the true intention of their outing was kept a secret. Not that it had worked, anyway.

At least the female titan had been captured in the end, and with her contained it was deemed somewhat safer to go out on another scouting mission.

After adjusting a belt that was too tight, Eren finished preparing his gear and untied his horse from its post. He approached the Commander slowly and on foot, bringing his horse along by its lead. "Are we ready to head for home now, sir?" he asked. With the Corporal still out of commission because of his injured leg -- and lack of a squad -- Eren had been instructed to stay close to Erwin instead. He did not complain.

[ i would assume that even in their human forms, titan shifters are extremely protective over the backs of their necks and upper back in general. they will not allow people they don't trust to touch them there. maybe it's particularly sensitive, too. THERE ARE VARIOUS INTIMATE POSSIBILITIES ]
