It is believed that braiding was practical for travel, particularly to keep the hair neat and clean during long journeys. It was culturally common among Arabs of that time and not considered improper for men. The tradition of long, braided hair; once common among Arab men, largely faded in most parts of the modern Arab world.
Historical Islamic sources do describe Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) as having long hair, and in some instances, it is mentioned that his hair was plaited or braided.
