I am interested in reading the 40000 war hammer book what do you think be the best book to start with some say Horus Rising please help me i do not know any thing about war hammer books
Horus Rising is the best if you want to learn timeline from the beginning. The various Omnibus stories are good as well but Horus Rising is the best.
Warmachine
Played my first official game of Warmachine last night. Went like this:
Opponent moves guys forward and casts spells
I move guys forward and casts spells
He shoots and messes up a bunch of guys
I charge a guy and ding his armor
He charges and messes up some more guys
My caster charges his caster and unloads hell while my Warjack fires and kills him
FIN
Overly simplified and more fun then it sounded. I think Todd was perplexed that it ended with a duel while my guys getting their arses handed to them. His Warcaster could take a friggin pounding. When he pulled out Cygnar troops I was expecting all range. Didn't expect a Warcaster that can take hits like a Warjack.
My opponent (Nate) kicked ass though and explained a lot about troop placement (which differs greatly from 40k).
While I think 40k is still my favorite, the idea of being able to play multiple games in an evening rocks. This is esspecially true since the 40k and Warmachine players from Beltway Gamers all play during the week.
WIP: Man-O-War Shocktrooper
Here is the latest WIP:
WIP: Khador Destroyer
Finished him a few nights ago. Not completely happy with him but I can see where I am getting better and where I see mistakes. I still need to add white to the scraps in the paint and then gloss finish him.
This was out of focus but I love how my crappy OSL effect looks when it's out of focus.
Picked up these for my new Khador pieces I am ordering next week.
Warmachine
Since I decided to start Warmachine/Hordes, I have been thoroughly impressed with the game. I decided to go with the Two-player box set. It comes with two armies, Protectorate of Menoth (religious zealots) and the Khador (Russians with big Warmachines and lots of troops). My original first choice for an army was the Cryx (undead type) but I decided I like the colors black and red. Khador would be my choice.
I bought the large book core rules while I waited on my box set and Khador rules. Reading through it was like it took every problem with 40k and made a rule to address that problem. Cover? Fixed. Models being modified to exploit the broken cover system? Fixed. What happens to those AOE attacks that don't have the range to reach an opponent and disappear? Yeah...fixed. It appears to be a balanced game that has a company that encourages the community.
When my set arrived, I quickly read the Khador forces book. The entire time I read it I heard Sisters of Mercy Floodland or the Red Alert 2 soundtrack playing in my head. I loved the theme and haven't regretted resisting the allure of the death god.
The game itself is a combination of 40k and Magic: The Gathering (M:tG). You have the basic strategy and the miniature side of 40k but you have the meta of magic. You build an army much like you would build a deck in M:tG. Each combination of units allow for combinations that can win you or lose you the game. The rules are simple and straight forward but the trick is in the meta. You though in all this and add a resource management function to add to the depth.
I haven't played a full game yet. Possibly next week but I have watched a few. Watching a game is different than watching 40k. The thing you need to do is watch why a player put an army together. What trick can it do? What are the gotchas.
One other thing you can see is that the scenarios are designed to encourage combat. Holding an objective for a round could win you the game in the second round if it wasn't contested. You could also win by assassination. Yep...if you kill the HQ (or Warcaster/Warlock) the game ends. So no dancing for two hours then zerg rushing the objectives. This is a quick paced game that rewards the bold.
I should have my two 35 point armies purchased and built next month. I'll let you know how they fair and if my love for the game is true.
WIP: Khador Destroyer
Started painting the red on the Destroyer. I still have a lot of work to do. I have to finish the red then go and clean up the places I was sloppy. Then do the rivets, wash it, then highlights and battle damage (to hide the imperfections).
WIP: Khador Destroyer
Finished up the metals on the Destroyer. I need to do a better job cleaning the model. I found a mess of mold lines.
WIP: Khador Destroyer
I assembled my Khador battle box. Here is the Destroyer with some of the metal work started. He is a fun model.
New WIP: Grey Knight Draigo
I started some work on to have his power weapon done by yesterday's game. Here he is:
I have added a lot more gold to him but I like his look.
Models and Stuff
Did some more work on the Razorwing the past few nights (I will post the pics soon). Finished up the gems with the exception of the gloss varnish. Gonna buy some this weekend. They look good for a first attempt. I have a few issues with the run off from the paint. I'll take care of that by making those areas where the chip details go. To paraphrase the late great Bob Ross, "I only have happy little mistakes."
I ordered the Warmachine box set. I wasn't too thrilled with the two armies included but after reading up on them I have been rather happy with their back stories and figures. If they actually release the box set, I should have plenty to play with. I will probably have the midgets start to learn this since they want to get involved in painting figures and the models are cheap enough I can pick one or two up for them to build and paint.
New WIP: Dark Eldar Razorwing
Started on this today. I think the model is way too cool.
Round 3 - Space Wolves
In Victory Points, I crushed him. Round 6 I for get to deploy my Tact squad and lose by a point. It had to be the best painted army I have played.
Round 2 - Look another Dark Angels Deathwing Army
Round two against another Deathwing army. The guy I played won in the final round due to some failed saves. Once again Vulkan destroys most things but dies to being Zergged. I found out the guy from Round 1 is one of the better DA players. Glad I wasn't tabled.
Round 1 at Blobs
Well, I lost. Took the guy to the final round but was beaten soundly. The opponent played Dark Angels and was cool. Luckily, I was able to drown my loss with good German beer and brats. The food rocks.
Twas the Night before the Battle of Blobs Park
I am ready to pack everything. I have some pictures uploaded after the break. I rushed to get these finished and while I am not exactly happy I can say that for my first painted army, it looks OK. You will notice the Vindicators are missing their blades. Well after I tried a final time to stripe them, one out of two turned out. I sealed the paint and laid a coat of blue around the edges. While removing the tape, I also removed some of the airbrush paint. So my dozer blades are now Navy Blue.
Note: The kick ass Vulcan in Ultramarine armor was done by Todd.
More pics after the break...
