Picked up the latest Boudika Comics offering at SDCC 2015, Maui.  They always do great work.  Check them out.  I imagine they will get a mention on Indie Comic Book Noise

Stars Wars Day Stormtrooper Exhibit in Downtown LA 2014 Part 1

For only 3 days, there was a great Star Wars art exhibit where they gave a bunch of great artists storm trooper busts and they all went crazy.  I went on Friday when the crowds were low.  By Sunday the lines were down the block.  It was a fairly small space but well utilized.

    Here was the modest external display.

HOME COMIC BOOK BINDING UPDATE #3

OK, sadly work (the bill paying type) got in the way of my binding but I am back up on it.  I have started working on multiple binds at the same time because of the fact there is so much pressing that goes on.

Lessons learned:

1. I get tired of the same thing except for stitching so I break up tasks.  Therefore I do not put guide holes in all my comics at once.  I do one comic, stitch, place the next comic over that one, mark guidelines, take the awl and punch them out, then stitch, then repeat.

2.  I leave the staples in when I punch out the guide holes.  You have to work around a staple but it keeps the pages together.  Then I pull out the staples.  At least for old First comics, staple placement was not consistent.

3. See first photo as I got a good bind on the cover.  Progress but still need to work the coverings as I am using paper instead of book cloth. But still sweet gutter action.  I lose nothing and Jon Sable loves those double page spreads.  Suck on it big two binding companies.  Mine may look sloppier but I can see the WHOLE page.

4.  Press your text block for a little while before you put the glue on it.  It helps keep it nice and preps for the glue.  It takes more time but I think it is worth it.   

5. Tried an experiment using cheap paper for the end papers.  Ledger size is cheap and available by the ream (see the original posts).  I used it for end pages but completed glued it.  This means you lose the entire first page and back page but remember I used a Spectra cover so I don't care that I lost it and I don't mind losing the back cover (house ad that is repeated on other issues in the bind).  The downside is above.  See how you can see the hard cover board underneath (it is the darker section).  Not sure if this bothers me or not but it really drops the unit price on these books down.  If people want (tweet me or comment here) I will do a unit cost breakdown difference.  Obviously you can save more money by shopping around on your supplies.  Keep on binding.
