First Act: Prince Jonathan’s birthday party at his castle
The King, George the first, is worried that his son hasn’t married and he announces to the prince that he will have to choose a bride on the ball that they are going to host the next day. Jonathan is worried, he had never felt so hard-pressed before. He heads to the lake to hunt and relax himself.
Second Act: The shore of the lake
Prince Jonathan spots some swans, when he’s about to shoot, the biggest bird transforms into the most beautiful woman he has ever seen. He approaches her, but she is fearfull. Soon she knows he’s not a threath, her name is Erina, the Swan Queen. Erina tells Jonathan she had been cursed by the evil wizard Dio, she’s condemned to turn into a swan every day and to only retain her human form at night. The curse will break when she finds true and faithful love. The Prince and the Queen dance until dawn, the swans are joyful.
Third Act: The Great Hall at Prince Jonathan’s castle
The ball has begun, many ladies are willing to marry the Prince, but he can’t stop thinking about Erina. Suddenly, a familiar figure appears, Jonathan thinks the Swan Queen has arrived and dances with her. Instead of her usual white, she’s dressed with a completely black attire. It is not the Swan Queen, is Dio, the evil wizard and black swan in disguise. The true Erina arrives to the castle, but she is trapped in her swan form. She tries to get Jonathan’s attention by the window, but he’s too mesmerized by the fake Erina, he doesn’t notices the desperate swan at the window. After dancing and dancing and being utterly captivated by the marvellous chat he’s had with his partner, Jonathan tells his father he will marry to the girl he’s spend the ball with.
Fourth Act: The shore of the lake
Jonathan goes to the shore of the lake to properly ask for Erina’s hand, but she tells him that he had been fooled by the wizard. Jonathan is intrigued, for he had noticed a different tone in his conversation at the ball, his heart is pounding. Dio enters the scene, Jonathan looks at him, he is the most beautiful person he has ever seen. Dio smiles and gazes at Erina.“I’ve won”, he smiles while she crumbles when the Prince goes to his arms.
So, the swan lake counts as a fairytale. Is funny, the real ballet doesn’t have an “official” ending, so every play is a surprise. Sorry Erina, but this time the black swan won the prince’s heart.
