Hey, I was just gonna ask this to see if anyone else has felt the same way. But do a lot of fictionkin types come from the fact that the character is rooted deeply into your childhood so they have become a very important part of your life?
How do I know if I’m fictionkin? Is it okay if I’m fictionkin and believe X? I identify with X but I know its wrong! (teehee) If I identifying with X, does that make me fictionkin?
Identifying with the personality of a character does not make you fictionkin
liking that character strongly does not make you fictionkin
wearing the persona of that character to cope with your personal insecurities and struggles does not make you fictionkin.
Wanting to be a character does not make you fictionkin.
Everyone is afraid to say it. Everyone is afraid of ‘erasing’ someone, or ‘invalidating’ someone. But no, words are important. Words exist to define things, to make us understand what something is. If a word can mean anything, then it means nothing.
Fictionkin (noun): A person that believes that his, her or its identity is synonymous with that of a specific fictional character, or a non-specific creature or person of any species that exists only in a specific fictional world.
You are not fictionkin if your identity is a choice to you. If you thought to yourself, “well, I like Pikachu, but I think Vulpix suits my personality better, so I’ll pick that one”, you are NOT FICTIONKIN.
I’m not trying to sit here invalidating people who chose to take on such and such identity. If you decided you want to be a Vulpix, and that makes you one, good for you, you’re a Vulpix. But you’re not a FICTIONKIN Vulpix. And you’re not a fictive Vulpix either.
In fact, lets make up a word for this right now. How does *FICTIONHEIR* sound? One who inherits the traits or identity of a fictional character as their own, and takes up their mantle.
“I identify strongly with Cloud Strife and I have decided to become his Fictionheir. You can call me Cloud now, and I will strive to carry on his legacy.”
