Concept statement:
Overview:
In response to my first assignment I aim to further develop the link between ‘man’ and the ‘environment’ through the application of ergonomics in the increased physical relation between man and their environment. I aimed to create a more ergonomic set of tools/ tool handles through the alteration of the typical handle into that resembling an axe, this was placed into the form of a set of striking tools being the mallets and the hatchet. This process was developed over a series of weeks and evolved to form a tool ergonomically suited for my personal use.
What was done
Week 5: During this week the most basic of research was commenced in the form watching videos related to axes and mallets and the finding and ordering of relevant materials (as in research materials not physical materials) so as to aid the development of my general understanding of what I was be creating and if it is possible to feasibly do so with my limited skills. This research led to the further development of the concept through experimenting with potential dimensions as well. During this week if I had been more productive I may have been able to generate another work (additional mallet) through the utilisation of Fusion 360 and gotten a mallet head cast and delivered in time for the final project.
Week 6: During this week I commenced the creation of a prototype in the form of a softwood (pine) version of what I wanted to create ( for the reasoning that it is easier to work and thus allowed the process of creation and shaping to be understood as the final handle was also to be made of a wooden material and thus provide me with crucial experience in the process, and be a faster process). During this time I was also conducting material research in regard to a set of criteria that was developed in week 5 in regard to what was needed for the tools I wanted to construct as had been established during my development of the concept, however, material was also categorised by cost and its general availability to me. During this week I also did some drawings of how I believe I may be able to attach and construct the various tools and if I had been productive with the 3D modelling would have been able to find an appropriate timeframe to outsource any tasks I was unable to do to create the product (i.e. the casting of something in metal). However, I was productive in other ways in that I was able to advance during this week into a state where I was already progressing into what I had planned to be doing in week 7.
Week 7: During this week I began the process of shaping the tools I had chosen after having been able to get to the workshops at the university the week before so as to fasten the process even if only slightly, I was also able to begin the sanding of the products and the attachment of the heads to the mallets.
Week 8: During this week I was able to begin placing the finishing touches on the works in the form of further sanding and placing a coat of oil over the works (excluding the prototype). During this week I planned on finishing the final product and beginning the construction of the final Tumblr posts which were to be posted in the last week so as if anything unexpected comes up the post may be adapted or altered to provide the most accurate representation that the work will have undergone. However, as nothing can ever go to plan some processes took longer than expected or unexpected circumstances arose and I was unable to keep on track between week 7-8 and had little time to produce and polish final posts.
Week 9: Early this week the final Tumblr post was to be posted along with the research post as they were to be developed throughout the construction of this project so as to ensure accuracy regarding inspirations and general research on whatever topics become relevant however were delayed.
Reflection: If I had been more time conscious and resource-aware I believe I may have been able to further follow the critique provided to me from the first assignment and in the end produce a better product. However, for the tools I had available and the research conducted I still believe that The tools are of a reasonable finish, however, if I were to do it again I know I could do it better.

Research and reasoning:
At the beginning of my assignment, I had simply the idea of the changing of the handle style on some mallets, however, I had no idea what kind of mallets I was after to alter, the materials I was after, or even how to make a hatchet handle. This led me down the deep rabbit hole which became my research for this assignment.
I started by selecting the type of mallet I would potentially make by basing it on mallets commonly used in carpentry these included the potential construction of several mallets including a joiners mallet, carvers mallet, dead-blow mallet, rubber mallet, or alternatively a brass or journeyman’s mallet (1) from previous experiences in using hammers a tap hammer was also contemplated. The joiners mallet is simple in its construction compared to some of the other mallets and is commonly used in carpentry with its primary use is in its use for chiselling, I believe due to the larger head on this mallet in the way of weight distribution this may be the most similar to that of an axe and ergo would act as a good control for this assignment. Next on the list is the carvers mallet this most typically is turned from a single piece of wood and is utilised for hammering gouging tools for carvings typically, this would be interesting with the weight distribution of the mallet as it is more balanced than the joiners mallet and shall be constructed. (Note: due to not being able to get an introduction to the lathe this will not be of a single piece of wood but rather be put together with some creative joinery instead). The dead-blow mallet is used for the more gentle driving of wood together with less potential of damaging the piece due to the use of plastic or rubber ends reducing the impact produced from the packing of the dense material inside of the tool. I do not believe that with my current access to tools or time to complete this assignment that I would be able to successfully create this hammer along with the joiners and carvers mallet as it would involve my focus being shifted onto the creation of a 3D model and other tasks that would quickly consume my limited time, ergo I will not be creating a dead-blow mallet. Following the dead-blow mallet in many physical attributes is the rubber mallet which is predominantly a general purpose tool doing much the same as the dead-blow however lacking the dense material packed inside of it, however, the issue in my creating one of these is that I do not believe it possible with the supplies available to me to create a rubber head that could possibly be fixed to the end of a mallet in any other way that they typically are which is to say with an industrial strength glue and the handles professionally made to fit. Although I am up for a challenge I know my limits and yet again the creation of such a handle with the tools available to me would be folly, a waste of material and time, as after all even if I altered the head to allow for wood joining methods to fix it to the handle the damage to the head would lead to accelerated deterioration of the mallet head. Lastly on the list was the Brass head mallet/ journeyman’s mallet, these can vary in sizes but is most typically small and are utilised for small precise striking typically in joinery. Due to the inability to find suitable ends for this hammer that would arrive both on time and not cost me an arm and a leg this mallet was forgone however would have had potential to be made with the simple method of creating a fusion 360 model and having it printed and then sent to be cast, however, this would mean the metal was soft from lack of being forged to withstand multiple blows and thus I would end up having created little more than an ornamental piece in the shape of a hammer. In conclusion after some research and contemplation, I have decided to create a carving mallet and joiners mallet for the second assignment along with an actual hatchet handle for the demonstration of an association between the two in regard to shape and to develop my understanding of the needs of the handles.

After the hammers were decided upon I did further research into the features of the handle in a hatchet/axe and the different variations, during this research I also found out what made them strong or weak. Firstly I looked into the variations on the typical axe/hatchet handle, which are listed below:
- curved handle
- straight handle
- octagonal shaped
-oval shaped
- fawn footed
- scroll ended

- New England
- house axe
- boys single bit
- bent

(Note: The bit refers to the actual head that would be placed on the handle so whilst the boys axe would be classed as a single bit, because there was only one bladed face on the axe, the cruisers axe would be classed as a double bit because typically there would be two bladed faces on the axe head attached to it thus giving it more balance (4.))
After this list was created a series of inquiries were rose up, such as, what were the reasons for these major or slight variations in axe shaping? and which would best suit a mallet? After scouring the internet like a madman I was able to find a few sources on the subject. The most dominant difference that bothered me was the difference between the handle being straight or being curved as if the straight handle was more practical then all things done so far would be void of any potential, however, I have found out that the key difference is in the axis within the handle during the swing, for a straight handle the axis is in the centre of the handle when being used and ergo is more suited to larger axes where both hands are required to swing, examples of this can be easily seen in medieval weapons such as spears and polearms which were designed to have both hands used and ergo used a straight pole rather than a curved one as the power output would be lessened. The curved axe actually has its axis of rotation on the lower bend (usually where the hand grip is) thus allowing for more control by the swingers hand. (5.)) as can be seen with the Swedish carving axe/ Gränsfors (6.). So in order for the best outcome in regard to the energy efficiency of the blows produced by the mallets due to their size they should have curved handles, but what about the other types of alteration of axes such as the fawn foot and scroll foot? In terms of practicality, these make little difference as they are actually more of a personal preference for the user (7.) and so, as a result, I shall be in the drawing of my own hatchet and mallet handles be drawing inspiration from my personal experience with varying axe handle shapes and choose key features that I prefer and be applying those to the handles. However, there was one uniformity amongst all axe handles and that was that the grain must run along the axe not across it so as to allow for greater strength
In conclusion, the curved axe-style shall be applied to the mallets and the hatchet as it allows for both greater control and power to be applied for the scale that this project is being made at, and a scroll end shall be applied at the knob of the axe whilst the handle shall be curved with a double shoulder with an oval-shaped handle.
After having decided on what I wanted to construct I did further research into how to construct it, this involved research for inspiration purposes and to deepen my understanding of the processes that needed to be undertaken.

As it turns out someone had already come to my conclusion in regard to the hatchet handle on a wooden mallet, his approach is intriguing, however, I do believe that I can improve upon what has appeared in this video and will create a varied result as I am doing more than the typical joiners hammer. My planned method and the one he has utilised are different however it has raised some ideas as to the attachment of the handle to the head as I do not plan on using a wedge to keep it in place. (.9)

The utilisation of the file I find agreeable as unlike other videos so far I don’t have continual access to and band saw and don’t wish to spend copious amounts of time in the uni workshop and lugging pieces of wood to and from uni, so this method of shaping would allow me to continue development at home with minimal use of the bandsaw. I am beginning to see patterns in the style and tools used to create these, however, one of the factors of the construction of the handle I find myself disagreeing with in the design many seem to be implementing is that they do not have a catch on the handle (I am unsure of the official jargon for it but it is when the end of a handle expands in thickness and occasionally general size so that if the grip is lost on the handle than it still remains in the hand rather than flying off elsewhere). However, I do like the angles on some of the curves of this axe and may implement something similar in my own design. (.12)

Nice mallet and cute dog, however, the end result whilst looking brilliant to me feels more like a display piece rather than something that would actually be used for fear of damaging it, not to say it wouldn’t function just that I feel less emphasis should be placed on the looks of the object and move on if it can get the job done. Note: this experiment was done under the idea that if I were to 3D print a mallet head to replace the rubber mallet than I would use a plastic replacement to the dimensions of this one created in fusion 360 and it would feature a hole through its side so I could use a dowel joint to hold it in place.

Material research undertaken
Via my own logic, my research posts shall be posted closer to the due date due to the possibilities of ongoing research throughout the process of creation of this project however as the base materials have been decided upon I shall post this as a separate post to that of my primary research.
One of the main factors of my handles is that I am aiming to utilise a native Australian wood in the handles, however, this wood must meet certain criteria. The ideal wood for an axe handle via my own logic is one that could also be used for a bow as it would allow potential flexibility within the wood that would allow for the absorption of vibrations when striking which would aid in the practicality of the tool when in extended use. Native Australian woods that would be useful for this include ash (1) or Hickory(2) as they usually grow in longer straight staves meaning it is ideal for handles. However, there are alternatives available from less traditional woods for these tools such as spotted gum, ironbark, wirewood, and Asian oak (3) which are all native Australian hardwoods again, however, are less popular as they have alternate characteristics opposed to those found in ash and hickory. I shall do further research into individual materials and decide from there with further research into the properties of each wood and their coat and availability as to which shall be selected and utilised for this project
Conclusion: after examining the price range and the availability of these woods I have chosen to work with Australian mountain ash as to me it is the most readily available and most affordable option whilst also still being suitable to the task.

After the shaping of the hatchet handle the head was then readied for fitting and as of now the wooden wedge is currently under construction (made from a piece of scrap ash from the process of cutting out the initial pieces for this project)

After this process I began the construction of one of the other potential mallets accompanied with the creation of a hatchet handle. This began with the shaping of the heads for the carving mallet and the shaping of the hatchet handle.

(Pease note the following may have some repetition to what was said in previous posts and I am aware of this, however, I believe this format to be more concice in the elaboration of what I have undertaken thus far)
Prototyping
This was the first prototype made from hand drawing without any referencing to sizing to endeavour to find a personal shaping for the handles that contained my preferred shaping.
Exploration of dimensions and base shapes through the stiching of hatchet and axe handles to different sizes allowing for the finding of an appropriate scale.
Pieces were marked and cut to scale out of Australian mountain ash.
Shaping with carving tools, rasps, and sand paper began.
Once this shaping was completed I created a head out of Tasmanian oak (another Australian hard wood, again scrap from a previous project) and attached through the use of a dowel joint and a hardwood cap inspired from the book "Art of Japanese journey" by Kiyosi Seike. This mallet (the joiners mallet) was then coated in boiled linseed oil to seal it. Experimentation occurred through the choosing of the cap to the mallet which was decided upon by coating some gum, Tasmanian oak, and another hardwood in linseed oil and seeing which created the best contrast with the ash. In this case it was the mystery hardwood which I have been unable to find or remember the name for but was again a piece of scrap wood.

Week 5:
I started by doing. I began to sketch and think of random things after the presentation as to what I could potentially create, after using a hammer for an extended period of time I began to contemplate ways to reduce the vibration and strain placed on my wrist whilst using such a crucial tool. After some contemplation I came to the realisation that a dull axe was essentially a hammer and yet the use of an axe or hatchet causes less strain on the wrist, this I don't believe to be due to the angle of the stroke but rather the shaping of the handle as the axe handle is deliberately designed to lessen the impact of various vibrations from impact. And so I decided to create a series of tools with axe styled handles.
For this project I have decided upon the development of a series of tools with axe styled handles for ergonomic purposes. My first decisions can be seen being made through my rough notations in my notebook with both sketches on how things would potentially work with the new style of handle and the limitations of joining methods due to this. (Note: the research for some aspects will be posted in a separate post from this one as it may interrupt the general report and reasoning style of posts I wish to use to convey this projects general development).
Week 6:
I have developed a useful strategy as to the creation of a scale for the creation of the tools , (which have now been decided to be a series of mallets of different styles and a hatchet) with the printing of a basic axe handle at different sizes so that the shape sizing may be altered to better fit the specific tool it is designed to fit, e.g. a tap hammer will not be as big as the joiners mallet. These print outs were used to create the base dimensions that I wanted the tool handles to end up as however in regard to the shaping I based it off of a prototype that I had previously made as a prototype ( which is why it is made of pine opposed to the Australian mountain ash selected). After this was done I drew the my outlines onto the wood (the ones modeled after my own design that is) and proceeded to use a band saw to cut them to size and sand them flat with a series of sanding machines .

Step five:
Conclusions drawn/ final statement: I believe that this project has responded to the question in an honourable fashion in that it has followed the objectives I set out in my overview and that through the development of this project and the multidisciplinary practices involved in its creation it has revealed how contemporary design and art can be re-imagined through the creation of an equilibrium/ balance between nature and the man-made, which would involve such practices as responsible use of materials, use of both natural and man-made materials, and the use of materials native to the location of creation.

ADAD1002 Assignment part 1: Initial development

Concept statement:
Overview: For this project I aim to respond to the question posed through the creation of an object that highlights the ability of man to still re-imagine the ordinary through the utilisation of multidisciplinary practices, an establishment of balance between man-made and natural materials, a clear association between the natural and man-made whilst also highlighting their distinctive aspects, and the responsible use of materials.
Plan:
Step one: Contemplation will be undertaken towards the alternative meanings and answers to the open question posed. this will be added to the blog and save as a draft and then expanded upon once onto the next steps in the plan.
Step two: Development of potential ideas will take place during this period in quick succession, this will include the explanation of an ideas relevance to the question and how it does or does not respond to all of the criteria in the overview. This will also include an analysis of the idea with the addition of an explanation of the idea itself as a premise.
Step three: The selection of a final idea and its development through sketching and light planning whilst leaving room for improvement as the idea is developed and evaluated further during construction.
Step four: Construction of the design, this will include photographs of the process of construction and a small selection of photos of the final product for reference.

Reasoning: These steps and this overview have been provided to keep me on task and in line with my response to stop me from diverging towards an alternate version of the project that doesn’t answer the question posed to me. The suggestions towards what I believe will allow the reimagining of contemporary art and design I will follow throughout the project otherwise the project as a representation would be void.

Step one:
Upon my initial contemplation of the question posed to us, I believed that I could create a simple minimalist aesthetic poster for one of the simpler questions, how wrong I was. Upon my contemplation of the question “ Art and design often explore relationships between humans and non-humans, the environment and ecology. How can contemporary art and design propose new possibilities for imagining the ‘human’ and the environment?” I first had to contemplate what to classify as the “human” and “environment” factors and their interactions with one another in order for them to then be reimagined. Among my first initial contemplations led to the evaluation of the human versus its internal environment, the human versus itself, however, after evaluation, I believe that the design referred to is not focusing on this level of humanity but rather the design considered in my second contemplation. Within my second contemplation, I considered the warping, twisting, and manipulating of nature by man in its utilisation of the materials provided by nature to both create and destroy with its inventiveness, even developing new unnatural materials through the utilisation of multidisciplinary practices. With this in mind, I set out to develop a poster that would allow the fostering and development of the idea that could unveil how through the utilisation of natural materials, responsible use of materials, and the utilisation of multidisciplinary practices that contemporary art and design can reimagine the ordinary.

Step two:
1. Poster of buildings with outer walls having the visual texture of bark:
The concept behind this poster was the demonstration through the utilisation of Photoshop how manmade structures and nature could coexist in modern society through the manipulation of clearly manmade structures and the incorporation of the natural into them. The foundations of this idea are sound in its display of a coexistence between nature and the structured creation of man ,however, it does not incorporate the multidisciplinary skills that I believe should be incorporated in the practice of creation and it only utilises the imagery of the natural rather than the direct incorporation of the natural and the unveiling of the potential of the natural.
2. Poster of a tree casting the shadow of something that could be made from it:
The concept behind this poster was much the same as its predecessor in that it was meant to demonstrate through photoshop the potential of nature and its materials when correctly used, in the creation of other objects and how the two opposing aspects of natural and manmade objects can achieve a balance in modern society. This idea was based off of the concept of highlighting the usefulness of the nature we are surrounded by in the creation of our manmade objects and how with further incorporation of this natural base that a new form of understanding between the man-made and the natural could be formed, allowing for the potential of some form of fantastical design or art to develop in our contemporary world thus allowing a re-imagining of the ordinary. This idea seems further developed in its structured thematic approach to the question and seems to have a greater relation to the actual question however this poster falls flat in the same places as the other in that it doesn’t incorporate multidisciplinary practices except for potentially the combination of photography and the skills utilised to alter the shadow in photoshop and I still arrive at the issues of other than the photo’s taken of the tree (assuming that the tree is native to Australia) then nature is uninvolved in the process of creation and recourses are not truly utilised. Thus it would not meet the criteria I set out in the overview and would not be able to be considered a success or a proper response to the question.
3. A sculpture with light emanating or being projected from a natural (and preferably native) material:
This Idea was based on a more physical response to the multiple dimensions of the question. This response would be lamp like in composition however in construction would feature a more architectural/planned or even manmade finish/ shaping to its structure whilst also combining the natural elements of the materials it is made from. What may be incorporated into the composition are the flaws in the material to highlight the origins of the material and the potential for balance and interconnectedness between nature and the manmade. This would incorporate the multidisciplinary practices that I believe would be required for the reimagining of contemporary art and design with the designs need for carpentry and electrical skills. the use of physical materials also makes it easier to responsibly use materials and also allows for greater utilisation of natural materials in production.
Conclusion: the third project contemplated will be undertaken in construction for its meeting of more of the criteria than that of the other two ideas.

Step three:
Figure 1: (Rough throwing around of ideas as to what and how to build, initially I had considered utilising cotton wool and wood to create a cloud-like effect around the top of a "building" like structure and having the light emanate from there, however as this didn't match the overview the idea was abandoned. The second in the series was to make a small block of flats out of some wood with little windows that would have light coming out of this natural source. This idea was also discarded due to time limitations due to my prior poor time management, and that I knew the location I was going to construct the sculpture didn't have the correct tools to be able to achieve the level of finesse needed).

(After some consideration I decided to go for a minimalist approach and make the sculpture look clean rather than overdoing the nature themes and ruining the aesthetic, this also included contemplation of the colour of light that should exit the sculpture and the shape of the holes that it should exit)
For my want of utilisation of natural materials, I sought after a wood as I believed it would be easier to shape into the structured monolithic presence needed for the sculpture. I also wanted to utilise a native Australian wood if possible, thankfully in my neighbourhood, a dead gum tree was being cut down and I was able to procure some pieces that I knew I would be able to utilise in this and future projects before the wood would be able to go rotten. This displays my responsible use of materials through my taking of only what I could use and the use of a native natural material that otherwise would have gone to scrap.
The cracked ends of the Timber were cut off and the heart of the wood was found and cut into a rectangular shape, faults found in the timber or that were created during the shaping process were left in as a reminder of both the natural elements of the piece ( the knot in the wood) and the ways in which man can create character even in the faults of its own work (as is symbolised through the chip left missing, opposed to my putting it through the circular say again and having a faultless piece of timber). after this shaping process, a hole was drilled through the timber to hollow it to allow the placement of a light in its interior, this was done with a boring bit.
(Note: Any process where I have not taken a photo of me directly doing it is primarily because I either didn’t think it required photographic evidence or because I didn’t believe that it would meet the WHS requirements , e.g. me taking photos of myself cutting a round log with a circular saw would be a good photo but as I was doing this by myself it would not have been safe)
A separate piece of gash from a previous project was selected as the base (it could be said I was recycling, however, I believe this would be pretentious, I was just having respect for the materials available and their suitability to the task, however, I was able to maintain the native wood theme thanks to this piece of timber throughout the creation process). The prototype of this can be seen below where I practised the cutting of the timber along with the marking of the borders for the portion to be cut out for the placement of the top portion.

Once the Prototype was completed a rectangular base shape was decided upon as it would provide greater balance should the sculpture potentially be accidentally knocked or bumped.
The lines for the exit points for light were redrawn after the hollowing process left little room for the initial concept of multiple horizontal lights, so a new vertically based pattern was created and placed onto the timber. The wood was then placed into its base with the light after being tested and tagged.
The two parts of the sculpture were then glued together and oiled with linseed oil to accentuate the natural colourings of the wood whilst still allowing for the monolithic sharp-edged shaping of the sculpture to accentuate man's place in nature.

ADAD1002 week 2 "drawing"
For my drawing this week for some much needed practice I attempted to utilise the morning light and the ghost like quality of its emptiness to practice taking photos
Week 2 experiment
Similar to the experiment of last week I attempted to visually alter an image without the use of Photoshop ,however, I wished this time to merge an image with itself or cause a more solid reflection for the image to be connected to in the scene opposed to the hollow/faded reflection of last weeks experiment.
Initially I had planned to get a model or create a scene and try and capture this with some form of container holding water and my phones camera (as it is the best I have readily available).
For this experiment I utilised the rain on a train platform and attempted to take the image that merged the image and its reflection at its base using only my phones camera and the puddles of rain available. I felt that the subject of the image and the thematic implements of the natural figure of the tree being contrasted against the cold heartless asphalt worked well particularly with the reflection being the centre of the image.
Conclusion: This experiment was a failure, I believe that either a larger body of water would have to be used to get my desired effect or an angle that was unavailable on the train platform would have to be used. I shall test this in my next experiment. ( however as I feel that the extention of the same experiment is kind of half hearted two seperate experimwnts will be done on the week of its comensement)
In my research into the human and the environment, I have often found that it is “human” to create either from nature and utilize its abilities/ aspects or to be inspired by nature and create something new. I have found a project that I believe shows a great re-imagining of the human and the natural creating an interactive harmony between the two elements. “L’Abre aux Herons” by Les Machines de L’ile is a work which in their own words was ”Inspired by the worlds of Jules Verne and Leonardo Da Vinci” this project has been in its planning phase since 2017 and is to be completed by 2022. The work known as “L’Abre aux Herons” is planned to be the world's largest hanging gardens since those of the Babylonians and will incorporate both mechanical and natural elements into its fantastical environment. The project itself will cost 35 million euro and is being covered by both public and private funding. The work will involve two giant mechanical herons carrying twenty people each in circular flights in a discontinued granite quarry in Brittany, this will also include the twenty-two branches of the tree, eleven of which will be able to be traversed on by foot with the incorporation of flora into all roots, branches, and the hanging terraces, thus creating a unique lush ecosystem. It is the incorporation of the fantastical through the utilization of modern technologies and flora that I believe truly highlights the potential within the blending of nature and technology, which in turn I believe will develop and provide an example for a new naturalistic aesthetic and function within the modern environment.
