The Death of Lady Jocelyn Baratheon Targaryen
âPrincess?â
Rhaenys woke in the dark of the night, as someone â Kezmya â called for her. She shifted the shade on the oil lamp beside her and sat up. âWhat is it?â
âThereâs a raven. From Stormâs End.â
âAnd it cannot wait till the morrow?â Rhaenys asked quietly, but she knew Corlys was a light sleeper and could feel him stir beside her.
âNo, Princess,â Kezmya said and handed over the still sealed scroll.
Rhaenys looked at the wax seal. Not her motherâs usual seal, this was from Borrow, her cousin and Lord of Stormâs End.
âWhat is it?â Corlys asked as he sat up beside her.
âItâs from Stormâs End. Itâs not from Mother,â Rhaenys said, before she broke the wax seal.
âDear cousin,
It is with the deepest regret that I must deliver this to you by Raven. Your mother, my aunt Lady Jocelyn had a fall in the hour of the rabbit. The fall was brought on by the falling leaves and Lady Jocelyn suffered a wound to the head. Our Maester has been working on her since, but he fears that she will not wake up.
I must urge you to come to Stormâs End. If you come by dragon, do not send a reply by Raven. I will be waiting for you at the hour of the Eel on the landing field east of Stormâs End. If you do not come, send Raven at your earliest convenience. However, I must express the severity of the situation.
- Borros.â
Rhaenys read the letter out loud and then reread it twice more. âGet my riding leathers ready. I will depart at once.â She said and turned to Corlys. âWill youâŚâ
â⌠Iâll follow by sea at first light. With Nyssie.â
Rhaenys nodded thankfully and left the letter as she got up to get dressed.
Within the hour, Rhaenys was ready to depart. She was pleased Corlys walked her down to the dragon pit, giving them a moment alone. She leaned against him for a moment, feeling his lips against her forehead. âSail quickly, but securely,â she asked of him, before pressing her lips to his.
The onset of winter was palpable especially when flying at night. The moon and stars were hidden by thick clouds, and the wind was relentless. Rhaenys ducked down low, as Meleys cut through the darkness. Shortly before she could tell they neared land, the rain began and by the time, Rhaenys dismounted Meleys she was soaked to the bone with the ice cold rain. âSĹvegon lenton riĂąalbus,â she said and patted Meleyâs neck.
âCousin.â
Rhaenys turned as Meleys soared and met her cousinâs eyes. âCousin,â she greeted him and accepted the furlined cloak he draped over her shoulders. She stepped into the waiting carriage with ease and had just settled when they took off. âHow is she?â
âThereâs been no change,â Borros said with a worried smile. âThe Maester is not optimistic.â
Rhaenys nodded and turned her gaze to the window, though it was still too dark to see anything outside. âThe ground was covered with frost, that hasnât reached Driftmark yet.â
âEven though we are by the coast, the winter is taking hold of the lands. The harvest was smaller than expected and livestock are breeding less. Signs of a long hard winter to come.â
âAre you prepared for the winter?â Rhaenys asked and looked at her cousin.
âI believe so. And you, and Driftmark?â
âWe will manage. Speaking of Driftmark, my lord husband will travel here by sea at first light.
âWe will await his arrival.â
Rhaenys was led to her motherâs bedchamber as soon as she arrived at Stormâs End. She declined changing into dry clothes, wanting to see her mother first.
âMother?â She asked as she kneeled by the bed. Her mother was paler than she remembered, there was an eerie stillness to her being, but her chest rose and fell steadily, albeit slowly.
One of Lady Jocelynâs ladies in waiting helped Rhaenys change clothes and brought her some warm soup and a glass of strong spirits. Rhaenys thanked her and settled down close by the bed as she ate the soup and drank the spirits, feeling warmth spread from within.
By the hour of the owl Rhaenys noticed a shift in her motherâs breathing. Breaks filled with silence as she waited for her mother to take the next breath. Rhaenys sat down on the edge of the bed and took her motherâs hand. âIâm here Mother,â she said softly.
The maesters came just as the hour of the wolf began, but before it ended Lady Jocelyn drew her last breath.
Rhaenys remained still, holding her motherâs hand as tears rolled down her face. While she and her mother had had a troublesome relationship for years, the last decade had mended many old wounds and they had grown to be close friends.
âMy deepest condolences, cousin,â Borros said as he came to see them. âI must ask about funeral arrangementsâŚâ
Rhaenys wiped her face and looked up. âMy Mother has always been adamant that sheâs a Baratheon, but I know she would want a to be interred at Dragonstone beside my Kepa.â
âA Targaryen funeral pyre at Dragon Stone? I shall ask the Silent Sisters to prepare Lady Jocelyn for this.â Â
Rhaenys watched as her cousin leaned down and placed a kiss to her motherâs forehead, she couldnât make out what he said, but his words felt warm and loving.
âMy daughterâs will want to say their farewells, if you will allow them to.â
âOf course. I will stay with her until the Silent Sisters take her to prepare her for her last journey. Then I must ask to be allowed to send ravens. To The Queen and to the Prince and Princess of Dragonstone.â
âI will see to it, cousin.â

To All Lords and Ladies of the Realm, The Conclave of Archmaesters has convened, and by the wisdom of our order and the ancient methods of the Citadel, it is declared: winter is upon us. The turning of the seasons is no small matter, nor should its weight be underestimated. Let every lord and lady take heed, for the longest nights draw near, and with them, the cold breath of hardship. Grain stores must be tallied. Livestock must be secured. Walls must be mended, and the strong must see to the weak. This is no season for folly or pride but for preparation and prudence. Though we look to the skies and study the shifting patterns of the stars, winterâs strength will ultimately be measured not in days but in deeds. As each hearth burns and each hall resounds with voices calling for shelter and sustenance, the choices made by lords great and small will echo long after the snows melt away. Take this time to reflect not only on the cost of survival but on the bonds of kin and kingdom that might yet endure. The history of winters past tells us one truth: strength is drawn from unity, while division feeds the wolves that prowl in the dark. We urge all to act wisely, for while the days of summer bring growth and abundance, winter tests all thingsâland, lineage, and legacy. May the light of the Seven, the Old Gods, and every faith across the realm guide you, Archmaester Harrion, Keeper of the Keys, on behalf of the Conclave of the Citadel.
To the Lords, Ladies, and all amongst the esteemed peerage of Westeros, As white ravens announce another season's turn, it is my sincerest desire that the arrival of this correspondence in accompainament to the proclamation of a new winter's dawn provides respite, and reason to take heart, in the midst of our whole kingdom's commitment to preserving this era of prosperity regardless of what the coming season may bring to pass. Before the winter winds restrict travel and oblige your liegeships' absolute attention to the protection and care of our lands and its people, The Royal Court of King's Landing shall host it's second Formal session of 130 AC. Commencing the second week of the tenth moon, the forthcoming assembly will begin with The Smith's Day festivities and conclude after the celebrations for The Mother's Day draw to a close. With our ability to congregate for next year's observances of The Maiden's and The Father's Day highly suspect, the Crown intends to host outsized affairs for both holy days to demonstrate to The Seven Heavens all the gratitude for their unending blessings this winter is like to necessitate us to sustain in isolation, and in equal measure, to honor the ties that bind our peerage which have allowed us to face whatever harshness the coming moons may hold with optimism and a brave face. Whilst winter preparations consume our days, the generosity this court is prepared to bestow on those who grant their favor in attendance is not to be overlooked. In-keeping with the tradition of The Good King and His Grace, My Father, King Viserysâwhose absence weighs heaviest for so many, and foremost myself, with the arivval of the first winter since his passingâas mine own nameday will come around in the midst of these events , I shall not ask for gifts, but instead offer them to those most outstanding in their contributions to allowing the start of my reign, and our kingdom as a whole, to thrive. Champions of The Court may be named for martial skill and exemplary service to Westeros alike, bestowed new measures of wealth to ease winter's burden, afforded safe harbor and positions within the walls of The Red Keep should they choose to seek it, and even greater honors than bestowed in years pasat on the seven young sets of intendeds chosen to represent our kingdom's future before the eyes of The Smith, our most blessed of this season. This invitation is not delivered flippantly nor without heed as to oncoming danger, but to remind its every reader that whatever they must do to preserve the interests of those sworn to them and who they serve in return, the unprecedented possibilities presented with this season's turn are a mandate to take every matter into account, and then meet the decision with steadfast dedication; As rulers, lieges, and regents, these verdicts define not just our legacies, but the very shape of the future for us all. Seven only know what this winter holds, but with these words, you are here by invited to meet it in the glow of our Court's light amidst the dawning dark. May you find good fortune in the moons to come, Her Majesty, Queen Rhaenyra, First of Her Name, Queen of the the Andals, the Rhoynar, and the First Men, and the Queen of All of Westeros

Viserys walked towards his chambers clutching several books he had bought from the library. Though the number of tomes in his grasp wasn't vast, their collective weight was considerable, weighing down his arms. Although despite their unwieldyness he was able to carry them, he wondered with a smirk if his recent squiring was to blame.
Just then one of the books on the top one with a dark blue cover toppled over, Viserys cursed under his breath as he bent down to begin to pick it up, but then the other books he was carrying fell over in quick succession as well. He sighed and kneeled down to pick up the fallen books, huffing in frustration and began to rearrange them like they were blocks and he was Baelon or Emma.Â
"Damn it," he muttered as he tried to maintain his balance while gathering the books back up into his arms. From the corner of his eye, he caught sight of a woman leaning over the sunny balcony, and despite her not staying in King's Landing often, he still recognized her lady, Jocelyn Baratheon, the former wife of the pale prince Aemon and the mother of his grandmother Rhaenys.
Viserys paused in his tracks, his usual curiosity propelled him forward to greet her. He approached her with a mixture of eagerness and trepidation, unsure of how she might react to his greeting.
"Lady Jocelyn," he began, his voice faltering slightly "I hope I'm not disturbing you."
Jocelyn had only been in Kingâs Landing, in The Red Keep for a few days, and though the royal wedding was still over a week away and Jocelyn already longed for Stormâs End. She had found a seemingly secluded balcony and had retreated for some solitude and sunshine.
She turned as she heard the sound of books falling. A sound she was all too familiar with. The amount of times Aemon had dropped books, when sneaking them from the library to their bedroom both here and at Dragonstone was more than she could count. She shook her head, smiling slightly at the fond memory of her husband. She didnât often dwell on memories.
Deciding that the boy â one of Rhaenyraâs sons, Aegon or Viserys wasnât it? â was big enough to handle the falling books by himself. He was one of those children her daughter called her grandchildren, though in reality they werenât. Related, yes, but her daughterâs grandchildren were the girls Laena had had with Prince Daemon and the boys Laenor had had with Princess Rhaenyra. The children between the not Queen Rhaenyra and King Consort Daemon were not her daughterâs grandchildren and not her own great-grandchildren.
Jocelyn turned her face back into the sunlight, enjoying the warmth on her face. Only when a young voice addressed her did she turn her attention back to the boy. Aegon? No this had to be Viserys she concluded, remembering what her daughters had told her of the Targaryen princes.
âPrince Viserys,â she said in greeting and curtsied to him. How had she once been married to the Prince of Dragonstone, mother of the queen-to-be and now she was curtsying to young princes all over again? âYouâre not disturbing me, how may I help you?â
Viserys hesitated and felt a wave of uncertainty wash over him. Now that he had approached her he was actually unsure of what to say he settled for basic polite niceties, A simple greeting and a few nice comments seemed to be the safest route for now, hs couldn't really go wrong with that even though they felt a bit lacking in depth.
âIt's a pleasure to see you lady Jocelyn, I hope your time in the capital has been well spent and that you have had the opportunity to make the most of your visit here.â he spoke with soft sincerity
Viserys stated âmy grandmother-aunt rhaenys is having another babyâ princess rhaenys was a common topic between them because she was lady Jocelyn's only daughter and his grandmother, "What do you think? Will the new baby be a boy or a girl?"
He was aware he was going off on a bit of a tangent and that his words spilling out in a disorganized stream but he couldn't seem to rein himself âmy muna is having a baby too, I think I want a new brother because I already have two younger sisters and only one younger brother.â
Jocelyn offered the young prince a kind smile. She remembered all too well how it felt to be a child in the capital. She had argued with her father, after he had sent her to live with her older half-siblings, the King and Queen, she wanted to go home. Home had always and would always be Stormâs End. Dragonstone had been a rightful contender to home while Aemon had been alive.
âThank you. The journey here was hard, I can never quite make up my mind whether to travel by land or by sea to get here, both ways seem too uncomfortable in my opinion. I am here for the wedding and to catch up with family. The Red Keep provides well for its guests, I have no complaints.â
Jocelyn raised a curious brow. Had the boy really called Rhaenys his grandmother-aunt? What a silly title, but for the Targaryen dynasty it would often make sense. âYes, I am to become a grandmother again, a blessing this late in life. Though also strange and two of my other grandchildren are to be wed. And I believe your mother, The Realms Delight, Our Queen is expecting twins, so thereâs a fair chance your wish for another brother might be granted. Exciting times all around,â Jocelyn commented, though she truly found it embarrassing that her daughter and son-in-law were expecting a child this late in life. The sheer knowledge of the fact that they still coupled this far into their marriage was knowledge Jocelyn had not wanted.
She deliberately made no comment about the gender of her grandchild to be. Both Corlys and Rhaenys had been adamant that it would change nothing in the succession of Driftmark and Jocelyn had seen too many family members die in childbed, leaving the children without mothers. She worried too much about her daughterâs well-being, despite their, at times, strained relationship to truly be excited about the babe to come.
âMay I ask which books and scrolls youâve taken from the library?â

Morning Chat
( A part of @asongofgoldenfireandblackblood )
Starter with @ladyjocelynbaratheon
Floris and her family had arrived at Kings Landing just yesterday, and she was feeling the exhaustion of the travel this morning.
She sat in a sitting room across from Lady Jocelyn, whom she had chosen to break her fast with. There was so much going on it seemed, and Floris was happy to have a peaceful beginning to her day with her beloved family member.
With tired eyes, she looked away from her food to Lady Jocelyn. âAre you tired from the travels? I surely am. I do not love leaving home.â Her voice was soft and her words honest and plain. People thought she was miserable at Storms End, but truly, it wasnât Storms End itself that made her miserable. Kings Landing was worse, she believed.
She smiled ever so slightly, beginning to pick at her food. âTruthfully, Iâm not prepared to be at court today. Iâd rather stay here all day. Though, I am glad to have you here.â
âGood morrow, darling Floris,â Jocelyn greeted her youngest great-niece with a soft, but tired smile. She nodded at Florisâ question. âI find travelling quite tiresome these days,â she admitted and wrapped her fingers around the warm cup of tea.
Jocelyn had contemplated staying home, missing the royal wedding. It was equal parts embarrassing and honouring to be the great-grandmother of both bride and groom. And Jocelyn firmly believed she had already been spending too much time at the Capital this year. The Kingâs death, the coronation of The Queen. And Jocelyn had been at court for most of the eight moon too, managing to spend some time with her daughter and son-in-law. Even if that time turned unsettling as Jocelyn learned she was now expecting a grandchild.
It had been The Four Storms, Floris in particularly who had talked her into travelling and attending the wedding. Jocelyn had recalled the fun of weddings in the past and had eventually agreed to chaperone her great-nieces and make good introductions for them.
âTired doesnât quite seem to cover it. Iâve always found The Red Keep to lack the comforts of home.â Home being Stormâs End. Her home as a child and her home since her Prince-husband died. Home was where her family dwelled.
Jocelyn smiled indulgently at the young woman in front of her. âOh, donât tempt me, I donât think Iâm quite ready to meet the Targaryens just yet.â Or my daughter, Jocelyn added quietly in her mind. âMayhaps we can abandon ourselves to a quiet morning before we set out to mingle?â She suggested and took a sip of her tea.
âYes, I have to agree. Storms End is everything that this place is not.â She emphasized her distaste on the words âthis placeâ, making clear her annoyance that she was here and not at home. She was still upset at her parents for forcing her to come to Kings Landing. After all, her sisters were here, why did she have to come as well? Cassandra would take all of the attention of suitors, Ellyn would grab the attention of those doting on her and her newly betrothed, and Maris would grab the attention of those charmed by her wit and intelligence. Floris was not needed, she believed.
Floris smiled slightly, looking down at her food. âBeing near Targaryens means being near the spectacle, and Iâd rather be anywhere but there.â Her thoughts drifted to her sister, Maris, who was a lady in waiting to a Targaryen Princess. Then she thought of her sister Ellyn, soon to marry a Targaryen Prince. She looked back up to Lady Jocelyn, remembering how she had married a Targaryen Prince, and her daughter was a Targaryen Princess. How did her family manage to intertwine themselves so heavily with the royal family? Floris felt herself disconnected from the world that the rest of her family seemed infatuated with.
Floris nodded eagerly. âYes, I would love to do that. Iâd like to feel at peace for even a little longer.â She smiled fully now, an unusual face for her. She was happy Lady Jocelyn understood her need for the peace away from court when everyone else pushed her towards it. âHave you seen any of my sisters this morning? I have not. They seem to be busy running around. They take to Kings Landing more well than our home it seems.â
Jocelyn sipped her tea slowly. At least the food was fresh and plentiful, the tea strong and fragrant. There were some goods things about being the Capital, but they didnât quite outweigh the load of being surrounded by so many people and the lack of comfort and privacy.
âTargaryens do have a reputation for making quite the spectacle. Theyâve done so ever since the conquest. Some are quieter, but in general they fill spaces more than most other houses do.â Jocelyn said. Her own prince-husband had been kind and gentle, loving his books and the vast library of Dragonstone. At least until their daughter had come along. Jocelyn had tried to raise a proper lady, but with her father ready to lure her out on dragon rides and reach her archery, Jocelyn had failed, and resentment festered and grew.
âNeed I remind you, that you were the one who persuaded me to come? The day prior to our departure I replied to a raven from The Princess Rhaenys, stating that I was still unsure. So, Iâm pleased she does not know yet, that Iâve arrived. Iâll face her soon enough, for better or worse.â
Jocelyn shook her head. âI have not seen any of them, only you and my maid so far,â she said quietly and reached out for a piece of cured meat, inspecting it closely, before she took a bite. âVenison,â she concluded. âItâs not uncommon for young people to develop a liking to Kingâs Landing for the court season. I have had my share of fun in the past, but Iâve always found it loud and crowded. And just a smidge too unfamiliar.â
âYes, they truly do. It is strange to think Ellyn will wed Prince Daeron, and Maris is a lady in waiting to his twin Rhaenya.â Floris looked down at the food on her plate, moving things around with her fork. All of her sisters had their places in the world, except for her.
âWas your Prince husband quiet? I wonder if I will have a quiet husbandâŚâ She had never heard Lady Jocelyn speak of Prince Aemon before. Floris was curious about it, as she was interested in everything about Lady Jocelyn. Floris also had to worry about her own self having a husband sooner or later, and she would feel better if she knew Lady Jocelyn had something to say on the matter.
Floris slightly smiled down at her food. âAh, yes, I did want you to come with me. But it was not my choice to come here, it is only made better by your company.â She took a long sip of tea, feeling the warmth from the steam on her face. âTo surprise your daughter may be nice?â She asked this as a question, as she knew Lady Jocelyn and Princess Rhaenys did not have a great relationship. âFor better or for worseâ, Lady Jocelyn had said. It almost reminded her of how she felt about her own mother. Floris shook her head at this thought, thinking, what a family I have.
Floris looked down at her food once again, which was barely eaten. She stabbed meat with her fork. âYes, venison⌠and yes, my sisters do well with this sort of life.â She sighed, taking a small bite of food. âI would much rather play my harp in my room. Or be with my dog. I am glad to have brought Rainy along.â Floris could not help but mention her music and her beloved pet, her two favorite things in this life. Once she had started to talk of these things, she could not stop.
âFather told me I could have another dog, if I only act accordingly this time at Kings Landing. It means no hiding and more searching for a husband. I hope to find a companion for Rainy, soâŚâ Floris thought hard about her own words. It made her horribly sad to think of her fatherâs expectations on her, yet, she thought of what she had promised to her mother. She promised her mother she would try to behave at court, and she really did want another dog.
Jocelyn put her cup down slowly, trailing her finger over the rim as she pondered how or whether to not answer Florisâ question about her late husband. She tried not to think of him too often and talked about him even more rarely. Mostly with her daughter, as she reminded her of him so much, especially now with her silvery hair.
âOf course you will have a husband. Someday. Thereâs no reason you wonât find one in the Capital during the royal wedding. But you might not, and that wouldnât be without reason either.â She said quietly, smiling fondly at Floris. âThereâs no need to fear marriage, sweet Floris. We will find you a kind man. One who appreciates your love of music and dogs. There are kind men in this world. Kind and quiet.â
Jocelyn sat back for a moment. âI was raised here. But my older half siblings, The King and Queen, did I ever tell you that? And she was actually the one to set me up with her son, Prince Aemon, after I had been away from court for months, staying at home, and by home, I mean Stormâs End. He was kind, smart, quiet.â
Jocelyn leaned over and reached out, touching Florisâ thigh gently. âYou know how I love listening to you pay the harp, watching Rainy. Promise me you wonât marry someone and move far away from Stormâs End? Iâd miss your company â and Iâd have to deal with your mother on my own.â

Welcome, Lady Jocelyn Baratheon-Targaryen! Weâre delighted to see she has arrived safely on her journey to Kingâs Landing. Around the court the five-and-seventy-year-old has been praised as proper, poised and polished but some have whispered she is also strict, harsh and unkind. Upon their arrival it is clear that she is in support of the reign of Westeros' first Ruling-Queen and while the eyes of our court may be fixed on House Targaryen, Queen Rhaenyra, and the future of Westeros, her true allegiance will always be to House Baratheon.
