heyy its been a while how are you

Hey! I know I've been super quiet recently, but I'm starting to do a bit better now, thank you!

Life just got a bit overwhelming (I've explained a bit more here)

I have a few asks and AO3 comments I’ve been meaning to reply to as well, my head’s just felt too full recently. I really do appreciate each comment on my fics/any asks, even when I’m slow to respond. I’ve just been a bit rubbish at replying to everyone in general lately (even in my personal life). It's felt like a bit of a brain block!

Sorry for the unexpected hiatus!! I'm back now!

I've been out of action the past few weeks as I've had a lot on! There was a family emergency (all's okay now), and work has been insane (basically working on dangerously low staffing levels over a prolonged period, and on a mental health ward the stakes can be high 😬)

I've not been myself over the last week or so, and I have a tendency to not realise I'm burning out until it's too late 😅 so I'm taking this week off for my mental health, hopefully that'll give me a bit of breathing room and get my brain functioning again!

This coincided with feeling unhappy with the next Fading Stars chapter, I wanted to rewrite it from scratch but didn't have much writing time or brain space (hence the delay)

The good news though is that I've spent the last few days rewriting the next chapter, and I'm planning to do a final edit ready for posting tomorrow 😊

Thank you for following the fic and for bearing with me, updates should be back to normal from now! 💛 (I'm also really excited to share what's to come as I think everything from now on is the best part of the fic!)

Fading Stars: Chapter 22

As the war deepens, Remus Lupin returns to his favourite coping mechanism: making himself impossible to save. Tonks keeps returning to him anyway, caught in something that never quite settles yet never quite ends.

Chapter 22: Remus goes to Tonks' flat with the news of Greyback's suspicions. Things get heated as they discuss the line between bravery and self-destruction.

🔗 Chapter One / Chapter Twenty-Two

She opened the door at once. Then, she simply stared. Remus stood on the landing as though he’d been dragged backwards through a hedge. His eyes were dark and alert, his hair standing up in places as though he’d been dragging his hands through it for hours. His coat was splattered with mud and uneven stubble shadowed his jaw. "I’m sorry,” he said at once, his voice rough yet still terribly controlled. “I didn’t know where else to go.” The last time Tonks had seen him had been Christmas, and memories flashed through her mind of his body warm against hers, encompassing her with the inexplicable feeling of home. Then had come the hollow ache of waking to find him gone. Yet somehow, those feelings of anger, embarrassment, rejection, the sense of being left behind – they all evaporated at once, replaced only with worry. "Come in,” she said, holding the door open as he stepped over the threshold.

Am I the only one who thinks that Remus and Teagan would actually make a nice couple? 🤔

Can you imagine if I got this far into the series just to suddenly make Remus fall in love with someone else 😂

Honestly though, I do get it! There’s something between Remus and Teagan that could read that way, as they both see through each other in a way others don’t.

I wanted them to build rapport very quickly, almost like they’d known each other for years, despite both being so closed off. They also don’t really know that much about each other, yet have this instinctive understanding of each other’s depths. They both look at each other and see another outsider

Remus also spent the year before with Tonks and Sirius and now has neither, and Teagan has a lot of similar traits that he misses in them (like being blunt, sharp, willing to call him out, and not letting him hide). I think of her as naturally bringing him a sense of comfort

So I see why you’d pick up on that!

Chapter 21: Remus and Teagan spend the full moon in the Cambrian Mountains. On return to the camp, Remus learns whether his warning reached its target - and whether Greyback has begun to suspect that someone in the camp is working against him.

"We lived in a cottage outside Rhayader once, it’s not too far from here.” He looked out over the valley, old images surfacing in his mind of ragged stone walls and the shape of distant hills through windows. “It had a back garden which led onto a stretch of moor. I was about eight, I think. The sheep used to get through the fence and eat our clothes from the washing line.” Teagan huffed a laugh. “Scandalous.” "My mother was furious.” Remus smiled at the warmth of the memory. “But my father insisted they looked apologetic.” "Did they?” "Not at all,” said Remus. “That was rather my mother’s problem.”

Fading Stars: Chapter 20

Chapter 20: Remus receives an unexpected proposition from Teagan, is forced to take part in a violent mission with the Enforcers, and later shares a quiet conversation with Calum beneath the stars.

Remus felt something inside him catch. “That one’s a star,” he said after a moment. “It’s called Sirius.” “Sirius,” Calum repeated. Remus nodded, looking at the star solemnly. “It’s also known as the Dog Star.” “Why?” Remus glanced at Calum, who was watching him with wide eyes and hanging onto every word as though it mattered. His lips twitched. “Because,” he went on, “it looks like it’s just a star. It stays exactly where it is, pretending to be perfectly ordinary so that astronomers don’t get suspicious. But late at night, when everyone’s asleep, it climbs down from the sky, shakes all the stardust out of its fur, and turns into a great black dog.”  Calum gasped in delight. “Really? What does it do?” “Oh, all sorts,” said Remus. “Causes trouble, mostly. Runs riot and makes a terrible amount of noise. He has very little regard for rules.” Calum laughed. “He’s dreadful,” Remus continued, his voice now soft as he looked back at the star, “but you’d miss him terribly if he went.”

Chapter 19: Remus makes a risky attempt in testing Teagan's feelings about Greyback. Later, Greyback returns to camp with a child.

🔗 Chapter One / Chapter Nineteen

“Name’s Calum,” Greyback continued. “Nine years old, aren’t you, boy? Bit him a few years ago. Mum wasn’t good at keeping her mouth shut. That’s not why they got rid of you though, is it?” Though his gaze remained fixed on his shoes, the misery across Calum’s face was still plain to see. He shook his head, shaking. “Go on then,” prompted Greyback cheerfully. “Tell them why Mummy and Daddy didn’t want you anymore.” Remus had hated Greyback for most of his life. He hated him in ways which had changed with age and ranged a full scale of emotions, from anger and shame to disgust. He had hated him on full moons, and he had hated him in the faces of strangers who stepped back once they learned what he was. But in that moment, as he watched Greyback parade a shaking child in front of an audience, Remus hated him with such force that it frightened him.

Three things to be happy about this week

Thanks for the tags @againaweasel and @ri--rina! Only just had the chance to join in!

Being offered a new job!! I feel sad about this one too because I adore my current job 😭 but I needed to make a change to have a better work/life balance and spend more quality time with people, so I’m excited for what’s to come

I'm going to a friend's tonight for a Eurovision party! We've been trying to organise it for three years but something always comes up (last year it was a wedding) so I've been excited about it for ages

This one probably sounds really dull lol but I’ve taken on a project at work which I've fully immersed myself in! I work on a mental health ward for teenagers, so I'm creating a unit handbook for them to have at the start of their admission. I love getting the opportunity to do creative things so I've run away with the designing, colours, layout etc. I even finished work an hour late yesterday because I was having too much fun to stop (which I never have with work) 😅

Do you have a posting schedule?

Hi, not really to be honest!

I tend to average about once every 4-5 days - it mostly just depends on whether I've had time to do a final edit, how many chapters ahead I am, how short the last chapter was, or how excited I am about posting the next chapter 😂

This latest chapter was after 6 days because I've just had a long stint of shifts as well as prepping for a job interview (which I got 🥳), so I didn't get time until today to do the final edit!

But generally it's every 4 or 5 days 😊

Fading Stars: Chapter 18

Chapter 18: Remus spends Boxing Day trying to outrun the consequences of Christmas, but Molly Weasley has other ideas.

🔗 Chapter One / Chapter Eighteen

Kingsley and Moody were mid-way through a conversation about a Christmas tree with cursed baubles when the front door slammed. A voice rang up the hall. “Remus John Lupin!”  Every person in the kitchen went still. He knew that voice, and, more importantly, he knew that tone. Across from him, Moody’s magical eye swivelled to the hallway. On instinct, Remus pushed his chair back and stood, already bracing himself as Molly Weasley appeared in the doorway. Her cheeks were red, maternal fury filled her eyes, and for a brief moment, Remus considered Apparating directly into the Thames. Arthur followed a step behind, already looking deeply apologetic and as though he had spent an entire journey trying and failing to prevent what was about to happen. Remus stepped back as she rounded on him. “Molly–” he said weakly. “You great, self-sabotaging, foolish man!”

Curious whether you always knew what was going to happen in the Christmas chapter or whether you had any other options that you were contemplating?

(The way how you wrote it fits my personal headcanon perfectly)

I've had this Christmas chapter planned ever since I was halfway through writing The Stubborn Light!

The main difference when it came to actually writing it was that initially I'd planned for Remus to have a night terror - Tonks would have comforted him through it, they'd have a brief conversation where she tells him not to go back, and he goes quiet because he knows he will. Then she wakes up to find him gone.

In the end I decided not to use it, because I thought the chapter was already carrying a lot emotionally and I didn't want to overdo it 😅 But I'm planning to do something similar later in the fic instead!

It's probably the single chapter I've spent the most time on (I spent hours editing it trying to get it right 😅) so I'm really glad all that time paid off! It also ended up being the longest chapter I've written so far

Chapter 17: Tonks spends Christmas alone with Rodney, the wireless, and too many mince pies. But then Remus turns up at her door.

“I don’t want to keep hurting you,” he said quietly. The ghost of a sad smile crossed her face. “I think you hurt me most when you’re trying not to,” she said softly. Their eyes held a moment too long. The rest of the world seemed to fall away, Christmas evening reduced to the warmth of his hand in hers, the soft unevenness of his breathing, and the fact that neither of them had looked away. On the wireless, Joni Mitchell was still singing, which felt unfair. Of course the song had reached the part about wanting to run from the very thing you had ruined. Tonks looked down at their joined hands and thought, miserably, that Remus had never needed a river to skate away on. He simply was the river: beautiful, impossible to hold, and always moving away. And then his gaze dropped to her mouth. Tonks felt the change in the air. Remus seemed to realise at once he had done it. His fingers tightened absently around hers and he looked away, his jaw tensing. “I should probably go,” he said, although he made no move to stand.

So far my ADHD meds have been life changing in so many amazing ways

However yesterday, I somehow became so intensely locked in that I spent 2 entire hours staring at the same 4 lines of Remus and Arthur dialogue trying to make Arthur sound as canon as possible - just to end up with something that was pretty identical to what I began with?? 😭
