i’m gonna live forever baby remember my name
“So now am I to surmise that I’ve become your personal brawler?” He teased at his sister’s assessment of their time in a tavern to which would both treat them as they needed. “Yes, Orion has been quite restless as of late, he’ll enjoy stretching his legs, I assume you’ve brought your horse, have you not Lae?”
“Why not?” Laela winked, before feigning a pout. “You know I’m no good at fighting.”
“Of course I brought her.” Laela’s horse was one of the few things she was sentimental about or devoted to. “I never go anywhere without Valkyrie. Though I’m sure she is tired from the trip, it’s always best to take her on a small trip to wind down.”
As she took his hand, Thorne felt the tension in his body fade away. It was that constant feeling of family that he always felt whenever Rowyn was around and he reveled in it. It was odd being that he never expected to feel it with Laela on arm but he was now glad that he had. Grinning at her question, Thorne only turned with one response.
“Why Fleabottom of course, where else could we find any trouble to get into? They are all too fearful of the King to cause any trouble around here.”
“Excellent! I could use a drink and a handsome man to tire of and then start a fight with that you get to finish.” Laela raised an eyebrow. It seemed that every Bane sibling had a difficult time finding someone. Though it pained Thorne and Rowyn, Laela was perfectly content not finding someone to love. “Let’s get the horses, shall we?”
In that convincing way of hers, Laela began to oddly make sense. Though it was her usual self enhancing that caused Thorne’s lips to turn up in a smirk, he couldn’t find himself shying away from his sister’s offer. “Of course, you can’t dear sister and even if you tried you know I would send someone to follow you. However, I am in no place to refuse my little sister’s request, not when it ails the trouble I harbor.”
Grinning genuinely in what seemed like weeks, Thorne was glad to spend time with his sister where he wasn’t lecturing her to be respectful and sisterly to Rowyn or to get her life in order. This was just spending time together, something they hardly ever did together, not even when they were younger and much less so now and so he was glad for it. “Shall we then?” He asked with a smile gracing his lips and his hand held out for her to take.
Laela took her brother’s hand. It was a strange sensation, but she took a special sort of pleasure in taking the time away from Rowyn. He was in a dark mood and he needed something more than the annoying moral center of their family.
“What’s the most troublesome place in this city?”
“You believe so?” He asked Laela, not sure if she truly meant or if she was only saying such things for his benefit. Surely it was never in him to act on such things on his own but now that Laela was offering it seemed wrong for lack of a better word to turn her down when he felt so beside himself. Her Loss How could it possibly be her loss when he felt like he was the one who lost practically everything? But one thing she said was right. He was Thorne Anderlos Bane, Hand of the King, Prince of Ib, Lord of the Shivering Cliffs and one of the most sought after men in the realm. As her hand tapped lightly against his arm, Thorne was surprised to see his sister so supporting to his aide. She was usually not so comforting towards him or so he had never needed her to be.
Reaching out to hold her hand in his, Thorne simply hoped to catch her attention and her gaze with his. This would tell him more than her words and careful gestures, but her words temporarily caught him off guard. “I..” He began before a slow smile spread across his lips. “I think so, Lae.”
“Well,” Laela began, grin growing by the minute. “I am already terribly bored here and someone as beautiful as I am cannot go into the city unaccompanied. What do you say, brother? Interested in a drink and some trouble? Nothing cures a broken heart like that.”
It was almost nice for her to spend time with Thorne, even if she was just checking in on her investment. He and Rowyn had been thick as thieves before Laela was even a twinkle in their mother’s eye (not that Lady Daphne’s eyes ever twinkled). Just another thing that Rowyn got to have first and therefore had better.
“Yes I think who I am overwhelmed her.” He murmured almost sadly but caught himself by clearing his throat. “No, I don’t believe she did, though they were hospitable and all I think she rather didn’t find them comforting or perhaps it was her experience of being alone that hindered her liking to them, nonetheless I know not.”
It seemed wrong and distasteful to him how easily his words flowed. He didn’t mean to speak so freely and well ill mannered but soon he realized it was what he truly felt. He’d always felt a tinge of something always at his mention of the Royal family whether it be Aegon or Lynesse or most importantly…Daenerys.
“Yes, a shame indeed. Though I too am glad you weren’t here for the festivities, Lae. I couldn’t bear it if something happened to you.” Though Laela may have been what she may have been, Thorne would never wish her to be hurt in anyway and his words were just as sincere and genuine as his smile.
“Well there is always the training yard, the gardens are beautiful this time of year, there is of course meals to be held in your honor and there may or may not also be an equinox festival to be hosted in our midst, surely you can find some way to spend your time, if you’d rather not spend it with me..” Pouting lightly at the prospect Thorne wondered what it would be like if he did wander around spending time with Laela.
“Well, I’m sure we can find some ladies who will not be so overwhelmed. Though perhaps even more temporary.” Laela smiled, trying to lighten his mood with a bit of inappropriate fun. “Perhaps it wasn’t meant to be, but it’s her loss, brother, not yours. You are Thorne Anderlos Bane and Hand of the King. Any lady would be mad to turn you away.” She patted him on the arm as they spoke. Perhaps her plan really would do some good. If only a small testing of the Karstark girl had driven her away, was she truly even deserving of her brother? She had been a nervous girl, sniveling even. How could she expect to marry someone so important?
“Well, I think that we should go have some fun and forget your troubles, don’t you? Haven’t you had enough responsibility and adversity for awhile?”
“Perhaps, but of course you know many ladies catch my eye, it’s holding my attention that’s the problem. And oh well yes Lady Karstark she accompanied us back to the Keep and was quite entertaining to speak with but as far as I know she’s rather taken with someone else, though we did spend a great deal of time together, I think it far too much for her to handle when it came to my company.”
Shrugging off the mention of Sansa as best he could Thorne felt as though his insides were cracking and shattering with every word but as always he held himself together with the utmost resolve. “I too was surprised she left the North.”
“Good, I’m glad to see you well taken care of, only the best for my siblings.” He smiled an actual genuine smile for the first time in days for her and it was even a shock to him. “Oh yes, it was a tragedy I or his Grace would not soon repeat.” Giving her tidbits here and there was what he knew to do, Laela was not only his Kin she was his blood and like his realm, Thorne knew his blood better than anyone.
“When it came to your company?” What little mouse couldn’t bear the sickeningly sweet Targaryen royal family? The tales she heard of the King and Queen were enough to make her eyes roll again. “Did she not care for your foster family?”
“What a shame,” Laela said. “I’m glad I didn’t come to visit for the wedding afterall. But tell me, what is a good way to pass my time while here?”
With an eye roll of his own, Thorne for once in his life regretted ever telling their mother anything. “She’s overly fixated if we’re being honest and there’s no one who’s done such a thing with me. Rowyn perhaps but not me, I’m the Hand of the King surely you of all hold know by now I don’t get caught up in the capturing of heart, though many women would swoon themselves if I was.”
At her apology, Thorne chastised himself for being so curt with her as the sincerity in her voice slightly mended his shattered heart. “No, you’ve done nothing of the sort, Lae. I apologize for my foul mood, much has not been to my liking for some time. It’s true though, my hauntedness has only reappeared and it’s been long since it’s returned. Tell how has my brother treated you upon your arrival? Your chambers are to your liking are they not?”
“There’s no lady who had caught your eye?” Laela wondered if the whore whisperer had given her false information. “Mother had mentioned a Lady Karstark? I hadn’t ever heard of her leaving the North though, so perhaps she was mistaken.”
“The chambers are lovely.” Laela told him. Truly they were. A balcony over the training yards to spy on shirtless knights and quick access to the gardens. It was a fine location. “Don’t apologize. I heard about the attack during wedding. That must be weighing on everyone.” Laela was careful. She didn’t want to probe too much too fast.
“I’ve no clue, though your presence is most welcome.” He grinned only half heartedly. “Had I not just said? Let me reiterate I wish not to speak of it and I’m not damaged in any form of the word. I’m quote fine if you can’t tell and we’ll sharing just isn’t in my ways, surely you are much the same seeing as how you’ve managed to side step your reason for visiting Laela.”
“Oh, please,” Laela waved him off with a roll of her eyes. “I’m not sidestepping anything. I just came because mother was so fixated on the idea of you and Rowyn marrying that I had to at least come out here and see what all the fuss was about and then also see who captured your hearts.”
“I must apologize if I’ve offended you, brother. It’s only that you haven’t looked this haunted in such a long time.” That was true, and it did wound Laela slightly to see it. It was Rowyn whom she intended to manipulate and Thorne was simply a casualty of her plan. Her apology was sincere in that fleeting moment of genuine sympathy. If she’d known love herself, it might’ve been enough to change her mind entirely.
“What’s got you so maudlin, brother?”
“Something I’d wish not to think about Lae. Coincidentally how are you baby sister?”
“I am doing fabulously,” Laela smiled. “How else would I be visiting family here?”
“What has you looking so damaged? Sometimes it really is best to share these things, don’t you think?”
“What’s got you so maudlin, brother?”
Prettier than I thought, but timid--boring, Laela thought as she approached Lady Karstark. It had been quite the journey around the Keep to finally locate her--Lady Karstark seemed not to be particularly interested in the gardens, nor in the ladies of court. Instead, Laela found her sitting quietly beneath a Heart Tree in the Godswood. She jumped a bit when she heard Laela’s footsteps signaling her approach.
“Oh, ah, if you have business here I can--I can leave.” Sansa offered, already beginning to gather her book and skirts as if to get up and depart.
“Please, Lady Karstark,” Laela curtsied, “My business is with you, if you have the time. I am Laela Bane. I believe you are well-acquainted with my sister and brother.”
“Y--yes, I am acquainted with them.” Sansa’s face showed her discomfort with the introduction and it told Laela two things. First, Sansa was not prepared to meet Laela just yet, which meant that Thorne (and perhaps Rowyn) had already “warned” her. And secondly, that Lady Karstark was not one who was keen on being caught unprepared.
“Splendid.” Laela smiled as sweetly as she had to Rowyn the day prior. “It’s so good that Thorne was able to find such a lady--I was so worried that he would never find someone who would be capable of understanding his moods, his absences, and his complete disregard for others when he is working.”
“He doesn’t have--” Sansa frowned. She was still sore about Thorne having neglected her to sort things out. She knew he had warned her about Laela, but his sister did speak the truth. It was the thing that wounded her most about him. “--a complete disregard.”
“Oh, yes, of course not. I’m sure things are much different with you than with the last woman who held his interest.” Laela didn’t actually know if any woman had held Thorne’s interest for long. She had never heard of him courting another woman, but surely he was not a stranger to women. At his age, it would be absurd. She placed a hand on Sansa’s arm gently to offer a false reassurance. “I’ll bet the King himself has to make an appointment with Thorne to pry him away from you.”
Sansa smiled back at Laela woodenly. She had always hoped that she was more to Thorne than the Princess had been, but perhaps she was not after all. Their romance had not worked out either--was it for the same reasons? It was easy enough to have so little of Thorne’s time when things were secret--unofficial. In the beginning any small ration of affection was more than enough, but would it always be? He had asked her to court him, but the gesture would feel hollow if he did not make her a priority, and how could she ask him to put her before his duty?
“Are you all right, my lady?” Laela asked softly. It was so lovely to see little seeds sown into Lady Karstark’s mind blossom so quickly before her.
“Yes, of course. I apologize.” Sansa bit her lip. Very real fears were welling up inside behind eyelids and she did not want this woman to see her cry. “I forgot that I am to meet a friend. I hope we can spend some time together again. Thank you.”
As Sansa gathered her things and strode off as quickly as propriety would allow, she did not see Laela’s smile grow behind her. All she could think about was making it to her chambers before her tears won the stalemate. Once she was done, she would have to ask Lady Brienne if she could have the training yard to herself for a little while this afternoon. There were several heads she was keen on imagining while practicing her swordplay.
“Lannister?I” Laela asked with a shrug. “Did you come for the wedding?”

“Yes, from Casterly Rock. And you?”
“I came after.” Laela adjusted her hair with steely fingers. “Sounds like I made the right decision, too. So much drama for a wedding.”
“I’m Laela Bane.”
“Lannister?I” Laela asked with a shrug. “Did you come for the wedding?”
