The Doctor and the Stargirl: Entry 1 - Little Noble Lady
"Donna? It’s alright. Its over now. Would you like to see her?"
Sweaty and exhausted, Donna Temple-Noble opened her eyes and looked up at the woman speaking to her. The flourescent hospital lights shone brightly on Doctor Jones and the slowly settling bundle in her arms. ‘Is that her?” She asked softly, almost as if she couldnt dare herself to believe it.
Doctor Jones smiled reasuringly. “Yes, this is her. And she is all yours.”
Donna felt tears well up in her eyes, her left hand flew to her mouth as her husband, Shaun Temple, clapsed the other one. Doctor Jones walked over and gave her the first sight of her baby girl. “She’s so freaking tiny!” She exclaimed, but in an excited and disbeliving way.
Shaun laughed and gave his wife a kiss on the head. “She’s beautiful, like a little fairy.” He mused, he couldnt help but be overcome with joy at the sight of her.
"Would you like to hold her?" Doctor Jones asked the new mother. Donna nodded quickly and held her arms out. Doctor Jones carefully guided her arms as she placed her daughter into her arms. Taking a step back, she went to assist another Doctor in cleaning up, giving the parents a moment before their attenton was required again.
Nervously, Donna looked at Shaun and back at the baby. “Oh god, I’m scared of breaking her. She’s so tiny and fragile.”
He chuckled before lightly caressing the newborn’s face. “Nah, she’s a tough little girl, just like her mummy. I can tell, just by how unimpressed she sounded she was born, she’s going to be just like her mother.”
Donna laughed in spite of herself, “She only was annoyed to have been disturbed. Little tyke didnt want to leave.”
At that moment, the other doctor came over, he appeared to be very cautious yet relieved. He had been the one to start the baby’s heart when she first arrived, so it was understood. “Look at her, already laying her claim on you.” He said with a smile as the baby’s fist wrapped around Donna’s pinky finger. “Have you thought about what you are going to call her?”
Donna and Shaun exchanged looks, “We discussed a few, but we decided that we would know once we met her.” He explained.
The baby looked up at the doctor above them, he smiled. “Your baby has the stars in her eyes.” Donna looked up at him slightly confused, causing him to elaborate. “Her eyes, they have a magical look about them. You can see wonders in them. She deserves a. grand name.”
At that moment, Doctor Jones returned. “Nurse Smith, will you go and bring us the forms? There are a few things we need to cover before their family comes in.” The man nodded and waved farewell and left, but not before giving the baby a very gentle tuck under the chin.
"Strange man, but he’s right." Shaun stated. "She is a special girl, and deserves a fiting name." His fingers lightly ran through the newborns ginger peachfuzz.
Donna thought for a moment, she felt a rythmic beat in her head and heart as it came to her. Beat, beat, beat. 1, 2, 3. Ad•el•aide. She didnt know why, that wasnt any of the names they had discussed. But in her heart she knew this to be her name. Donna looked at her daughter and it was plain as day. She was Adelaide. It was as if that had always been her name and she had just forgotten. “Adelaide.”
Shaun looked at her. “Hmm?”
"Adelaide, thats her name," she replied. "Its so obvious, cant you see it?"
To be honest, Shaun could only see an adorable little squishy that had stolen his heart, but when he thought about it it seemed to work. Besides, Donna had that look in her eyes. The one where she was faraway yet very alert at the same time. It happened often enough for him to know that when she had this look, it was best to follow her lead. He chalked it up to a crazy intuition she had. “Adelaide Temple-Noble?” He said, feeling the name on his tongue, rather liking the sound of it. “A good proper name. A rather grand sound to it.” Also, it had good nickname material.
"Yes, although since I did most of the work, she should just be Adelaide Noble. A little lady Noble." Donna teased, not taking her eyes from Adelaide.
Shaun smirked. “Now wait just a mo’,” he started, “I helped, and seem to recall you being very pleased with my work…”
"Oi, shut up. None of that talk around the baby. We cannot start scarring her for life for at least six more years." She cut him off, giving his shoulder a nudge with her head as her arms were preoccupied.
"Alright, if you say so." He said in mock disappointment as Doctor Jones interupted.
"Sorry to break up he new family, but I need to take little Adelaide to get checked over." Donna reluctantly handed over her daughter to be examined, her fingers lightly brushing her fair ginger curls.
Shaun watched as wife’s eyes followed them out of the room, but was surprised to find tears starting to form. He pulled Donna close and kissed forehead. “Donna? You alright?”
She nodded and wiped her eyes. “Oh yeah, I’m just being silly. First moments being a mum and all, very overwhelming.” Donna said dismissively. “Really, I mean it.” However, inside Donna felt anything but alright. A tight grippng fear took hold, she had read the books…. well, she’d skimmed them, and she supposed that it was likely to feel anxious. But it wasnt anxiety, she knew that inside. As if something sad was going to happen, happening right now. “I’m perfectly fine.”
