Hello! This is a part two to my first "oc lore" blog, I expanded on more characters in this blog. Enjoy!
TW: this story includes mentions of suicide. Please don't read if you are triggered by this topic.
Characters:
David Armand Eber (born 1994)
Joseph Karl Eber (born 1990)
Alice Eber (born 1972)
Karl Robert Eber (born 1970)
Armand Otto Eber (born 1945)
Adelaide Mary Eber (1946)
Their family has European origins. The grandfather of Joseph and David which is the father of Karl is German. His father took him to America when he was eighteen. He is an orphan who lost his parents at a young age, he lost his mother during birth and his own grandparents from both sides were dead before he was born. His father ended up joining the Vietnam war and passed away. Armand was traumatised and resented America for taking away his only family left. He didn't have the money to go to Germany even though he wanted to so he swore to never learn English (he grew up only speaking German so he didn't know English) he was already not very talkative before his father's passing but he almost never spoke and unless required to after the incident. He met his wife (Adelaide) when he was involved in a fight (people didn't like how he didn't talk to them and how he refused to understand them, they thought that he thought he was better than them, this sometimes got him into trouble). Adelaide saw the fight happening, and she was a strong but emotional woman, she could not bare to just stand by and watch, she felt like she had to take action and unexpectedly, she stepped in to try to stop the two men. They got so surprised to see a woman jump in like that, that they stopped fighting. The other man (who wasn't Armand) asked her, what did she think she was doing? She told him that she should be asking them the same thing. Why fighting? He replied back, it doesn't concern you. And she told him that it doesn't matter who it concerns, you should never be fighting on the streets like this and scolded them. Armand tried to silently leave but she grabbed him and scolded them some more. People on the streets were stopping to stare at them. Armand wasn't exactly sure of what's going on, but he understandood immediately that this woman was upset to see them fight. He was annoyed with her at first, but then he saw the beauty in the situation, and felt himself getting a crush on her. Once the scolding was over, he started following Adelaide around. When Adelaide eventually noticed, she immediately assumed he was up to something bad and told him to back off. He mumbled something that Adelaide didn't understand which further frightened her. Then he repeated himself, I wasn't going to hurt you (he said in German).
Adelaide had been speaking German from a very young age (due to her origins as well) and so she spoke it fluently, so she understood immediately. She understood that he probably didn't speak English and asked him in German, why are you following me, then? He replied back after an awkward silence, I wanted to be with you. Adelaide got confused and asked him what he meant. He looked like he was struggling to put into words what he wanted to say, but Adelaide at that moment could just somehow sense that he wasn't a bad guy.
After that, Adelaide and Armand started seeing each other often. It was mostly Adelaide doing the talking, but she didn't mind, understanding that he probably had an issue or a reason for not speaking.
Despite Armand's silence, their bond grew deeper each day and both of them grew very attached to each other. One day, Armand just silently brought a ring and placed it in Adelaide's palm. She immediately understood what this meant and put the ring on her finger. After that they got married in the year 1965 when Armand was only twenty and Adelaide was nineteen.
When they were out, Adelaide almost always spoke for Armand as he didn't speak much. But both of them were glad to be supporting each other. Then, in the year 1970, they had their son Karl. They were Catholics and they raised him religiously.
Karl met Alice in the year 1988 at church during mass. After that, they got married in the year 1990 and had their first son the same year. They were both still college students when they got married.
Alice was attending college at the same time she was a mother as she was only eighteen when she married. She attended a community college for two years.
Joseph was an emotional child. He would throw tantrums and struggle with regulating his emotions when he was little. As he grew up, he became more closed off but still had outbursts at times. When he was four years old, Alice and Karl had their second child, David. They gave him his middle name after his grandfather Armand after the long requests from Adelaide. At first, Joseph struggled to adapt to the attention shift from him to David, and therefore resented David for the attention that he got. Even though Joseph at first tried to hurt him (which deeply hurt their parents) he grew to accept David and even became weirdly protective of him. At some point, he was protective to the point of not allowing his own parents to be with David instead of himself at times(as he got older, he slowly reduced his strange protectiveness).
As Joseph got older, he seemed to be getting better. He was more social and didn't struggle with his emotions as much. It seemed this way until he turned 14. He suddenly seemed much more aggressive, and would often argue with his family. This was not only because of his mental problems but also because of how he was struggling at school with being outed and picked on.
One day, he came back home from school (he turned home late because of detention) to find David in his room, and at the range of the moment yelled at him and asked him what did David think he was doing in his room. David was a bit more of a timid child, and he felt afraid when Joseph yelled at him. He tried to explain himself saying that he missed Joseph and wanted to wait for him in his room.
In response to this, Joseph was about to calm down until he saw that David had drawn all over a project he'd been working on for years and was what kept him going (David did this unknowningly, he thought it was just some paper in Joseph's room and wanted to draw something for his brother and he used all the papers his brother used to make his project therefore ruining it). Joseph felt like it was the final drop and he couldn't help but yell "why does nothing ever go right? This was my everything!"
He started crying out of anger and kicked David out of his room.
Some hours later, David came into Joseph's room, wanting to apologise for making him mad and to play with him, only to be met with a horrible sight.
Joseph had committed suicide.
Seeing this horrible sight, David was frozen. He felt nauseous, and threw up at the sight of something so horrifying. He looked with wide eyes until he couldn't anymore and broke down crying. He called out for his mom but his voice wouldn't come out. In his efforts, he finally made himself heard and his mother came running upstairs only to be met with the same horrible sight.
They immediately called an ambulance and then the funeral preparations started. It was a very hard time for the family. They were religious, so they prayed all the time for Joseph.
This incident left a big impact on David. After his brother's passing, he became anxious and stressed out. He was already a bit of a timid person as a kid, but he became even more nervous afterwards. He would have nightmares about it and couldn't sleep.
In the end, the family had no choice but accept this tragic situation and move on with their lives. They became more protective of David after the incident.
Through this rough time, the person who helped him keep going was his neighbor and childhood friend, Ryan. David and Ryan were really close as they knew each other since they were little kids.
More about David:
-He is a big fan of the Rubik's cube and can solve it really fast.
-Ryan was his only close friend for a long time before he met Amaya, Ruben, Anthony and Elise.
-Because of his religious upbringing, he prays before important events like exams etc., and before eating and such. Ruben sometimes teases him in a friendly manner.
They're from California and the year is 2013 so I tried to make the cards accurate for that! I just found some sample photos online of California's drivers licenses from the 2010s and edited those. I hope you like them! I tried to make them look like real IDs as much as I could lol.
It was so fun seeing them come to life. Also I just really like photobashing it's so much fun even if I'm not the best at it(and I'm proud of the results so I'm happy:)). I hope you like them!
I wanted to talk more about these characters because I felt like I didn't write about them enough so I wanted to make a blog purely dedicated to them where I hopefully flesh them out more! Here it goes:
Amaya and Ryan met at seventeen years old at school when they happened to be in the same class together and quickly became friends. Amaya is curious, friendly, creative, and she loves video games and filming videos about them. Ryan is smart and witty, and is into computers. Combining their interests, they're developing a video game together. (They started this project at seventeen and it's been ongoing for two years. So they're continuing it at nineteen. It's a game with extensive lore and mysteries and it took them a long time to come up with the plot and they're putting a lot of effort into this game and hope to release it once it's complete).
Ryan has one close friend that he's known for a long time before meeting Amaya named David. David is tall and lanky with brown hair and blue eyes. He's got pale skin and has a bit of an awkward appearance. He really wants to be an engineer. David struggles with anxiety ever since the passing of his brother but feels like he can be distracted away from that anxiety when he's with his friend. Ryan and David like talking together, playing video games, and researching interesting topics. David is a big fan of the rubix cube and can solve it very quickly. He also taught Ryan how to solve it fast as well, but David is still faster at it.
Amaya has three close friends she's known for a long time before meeting Ryan. They're Ruben, Elisa, and Anthony. Ruben and Elisa are also Mexican-Americans like Amaya. All four of them are humorous and fun people. Anthony is the most reserved out of all of them. Elisa is the most emotional one. Ruben is the funniest.
Amaya has known Elisa for the longest(since 9th grade), then she met Anthony (nearing the ends of 9th grade)through Elisa. Then finally she met Ruben(she met Ruben in the 10th grade).
Then when Ryan and Amaya met at seventeen, they introduced their own friends to each other, expanding their friend circle. Now Amaya's friends are all friends with Ryan and David is friends with Amaya and her friends.
They're all currently nineteen studying different areas of study in college. Ryan is studying computer science and Amaya is studying media studies. Elisa is studying fine arts. David is studying engineering. Ruben is studying sociology and Anthony is studying education.
Wrote down the lore of these oc's that I made some time ago and it ended up being quite long... It was supposed to be like a wiki page for each of the characters but I'm not so sure that was successful. Also my writing is not so great at times so please excuse that. And if you're reading this please enjoy!
Eileen Jang (born 1964):
Eileen Jang(장) is a Korean-American woman in her 40s who works as an account director in advertising. She is strict but reasonable, witty but no-nonsense, and is a perfectionist towards herself and with her work due to her upbringing. She cares a lot about her work and achievements so she kept working even after having kids. She has three kids; the oldest Janie(17-22 years old, born 1991), middle child Ryan(14-19 years old, born 1994), and the youngest Lena(2-7 years old, born 2005). Their father is Eric Chung(정), whom Eileen divorced in 2004.
Eileen's parents are Sung-ho Jang(장 성호) (father) and Mi-sook Kim (김 미숙) (mother). Eileen's Korean name which her parents use when speaking to her is Ji-young (지영).
Eileen's parents are strict and tough people. They always expect the best from Eileen in every aspect of her life. This puts a lot of pressure on Eileen and affects the way she views herself and her worth.
Despite their generally unpleased-by-whatever-Eileen-does demeanor, they supported her decision in marrying Eric in 1989, as they thought he was from a good family and a successful Korean man. They strongly disapproved of her divorce with him, and like to strongly imply that the divorce was her fault.
Eileen and Eric met in college, when they both were majoring in business. They started dating in the 2nd year of their college life. Their relationship had many ups and downs due to their clashing personalities. Eric is smooth and charismatic, more relaxed than Eileen. He seeks fun and adventure often. This goes against Eileen's nature which is more strict and a workaholic, they clash in this way often. Eric also gets along with women quite often, and is 'friendly' with his past relationships, which caused further problems in their relationship, causing them to take multiple breaks in their relationship while dating and Eileen thinking she doesn't want to be in a relationship with him, but he won her over in the end and that's how their relationship persists(until the divorce in 2004). Their arguments were mostly about Eileen being too uptight, work focused and not romantic enough, and Eric being too loose and flirty/risky.
While they had many arguments and stressful moments in their relationship, they also had many great and romantic moments as well. Especially in their first years of being together. These moments and Eric's charisma were what fueled this relationship, the good moments were what kept them going.
They got married in 1989(they both were 25 years old). Both parents on both sides were generally happy with the marriage, besides the fact that Eric's parents would sometimes make doubtful comments about Eileen being good enough for their son, but still not unhappy with the marriage overall.
Things were going mostly smoothly, but Eileen didn't want to have kids at first because she didn't want to lose her career and be able to focus on her work. While Eric wanted kids and tried to convince her how great it would be many times, he also tried to convince her to stop working once she had kids which always ended in a heated argument. While Eileen was sometimes doubtful about her strict decision of no kids(but still was generally stern on the decision, or at least that's what she told herself), she was always certain to keep working because she deeply cared about her work. There was also a lot of pressure from both parents for them to have kids, which further tensed up the situation. Eileen was always strongly criticized by both parents when she said she didn't want kids.
One Sunday morning in 1990, Eileen discovered she had accidentally fallen pregnant after last night. She took a pregnancy test after being worried when she was unexpectedly nauseous in the morning.
When she got these results, she was horrified and frustrated. When she told the news to Eric, he reacted positively as if this is great news and what they'd been hoping for which further frustrated Eileen and resulted in an argument. The main components of the argument were Eileen accusing Eric of not using protection and doing this on purpose, and what to do about the baby.
After the argument, Eric let both parents hear about the news, which made the parents very happy but Eileen was furious. She couldn't do anything now that her parents knew, and even though she knew she wouldn't be able to bring herself to get rid of the baby anyway, having the decision seemingly stripped away from her made her very upset. They argued a lot, but Eric tried to make her accept the situation a lot.
In the end, Eileen tried to make peace with the situation despite the resentment from the betrayal lingering, and she tried to look forward to having a family despite being stressed about what to do.
As her pregnancy progressed, she tried to hide her pregnancy so she wouldn't have to give up the promotion that would be given to her, but at home this caused many arguments about when she's planning to tell the boss, especially because Eileen and Eric work in the same place.
While talking with the boss, Eric brought up the pregnancy one day, he couldn't handle hiding it like a terrible secret, he found it frustrating that Eileen's doing this. When the boss found out she'd have to go on leave and was refusing to tell him, he was furious at Eileen, and Eileen was furious at Eric for telling him without telling her first. She felt like her decision about the pregnancy had been stripped away by Eric's carelessness and selfishness once again.
She felt ashamed of hiding the pregnancy from her boss and getting into trouble.
Enough time later, on April 4 1991, baby Janie was born. Taking care of her and being on maternity leave was really hard for Eileen and caused her to have postpartum depression after the pregnancy.
After the first 3 months, she slowly started getting over her postpartum depression and started appreciating Janie more. Being back to work helped her healing process as well.
In 1993, when Janie was 3 years old, Eileen fell pregnant again. She thought that Janie was going to be their only child, she thought one was hard enough as is, so she was stressed from hearing that she's going to go through that all over again. Meanwhile Eric was very happy about the news, and so were both Eileen and Eric's parents.
On September 8, 1994, Ryan was born. Eric was happy to have a boy. The first months were hard on Eileen once again, but she handled it better than the first time.
Despite the hardships, she loves her kids.
Working and taking care of young kids at the same time is hard, Eileen insists on a nanny, Eric says she should quit working. An argument starts again.
In the end, they settle on a nanny to help with the kids. The nanny is a smart and kind young woman.
Things are going well for now. But one day when Eileen came home unexpectedly early and Eric was at home sick, Eileen walked into something maddening. The nanny and Eric are talking, seems fine except for the fact that Eric is clearly flirting with the nanny. Eileen goes to her room in frustration and starts looking for a new nanny, she's firing their nanny tonight.
At night when Eric comes to bed, Eileen's acting cold. Eric tries to show affection but gets frustrated, he says she's thinking all about work again, her minds never with him at the moment, he doesn't feel like he's with a woman he says.
Eileen asks him is that why he's been flirting with the nanny. Eric denies. He says that's just how I talk, and she's a beautiful young woman, it might come off that way to you but she's just our kids' nanny and it's nothing more than that.
Eileen gets even more angry at the implication that she's getting jealous, and that he expects him to believe that and doesn't confess when confronted. She tells him to cut it out and says that she's firing the nanny tomorrow and hiring a new one. Eric says she's being ridiculous.
She ends up getting a new nanny anyway.
Every time they take the kids to visit their grandparents, Eileen gets judged for the kids' lack of Korean. "What are you teaching them?" They say. Eileen's busy with work, with taking care of the kids and the house... She just didn't have the time to teach them perfect Korean, but now that's all her parents (and Eric's parents) will think and criticize her about. She decides to sit down and seriously try to tutor the kids to speak better Korean. She tries teaching Janie, Janie gets bored and wants to play instead. It's even harder with Ryan because he's only one years old. She does the best that she can but she can't force the kids into learning something they don't want to.
Her parents say she should try speaking Korean with the kids at home, but that just doesn't feel natural to her to do that after her and the kids are already used to English. She still tries to this, while they're still young it'll work they say. They do this for a little, but after a while just naturally turn back to English from hearing it all around them. Despite stopping the full time Korean thing, Eileen and Eric still try to instill some Korean into the kids, so they can talk to their grandparents easily and stay connected to the rest of their family and culture. Eric claims they'd learn this sort of thing better if she was a stay at home mom, this frustrates Eileen and she repeats once again she wants to work and she can take care of the kids.
Years pass by like this, the years have their ups and downs, but overall it's good.
Now, the year is 2004. Ryan is 10 years old, Janie is 13. Eileen and Eric are 40 years old.
Eileen finds out Eric's been having an affair. She's furious. She tells him to leave. She says what she always said about this, if I ever catch you having an affair with another woman, I won't wait for you one second. Either you leave or I'll take the kids and leave. Eric finds excused for his cheating. He says what he said all the time, her minds always on work, no time for them together, no intimacy, no romance, it doesn't even feel like I'm with a woman. Doesn't even feel like I'm married. You're always so uptight. I wanted affection and I wanted to feel good. Is that so terrible? He says this instead of apologizing. Eileen tells him to leave once again. He says, what will you tell the kids? She says I'll tell them what happened. I'm not going to lie, I'm going to tell them what you did. Then she waits for them to turn back from their friends houses. Today's Sunday. Neither Eric nor Eileen went to work today. She just impatiently waits. In the meantime, she calls a lawyer.
She tells the kids, me and your dad are separating. Janie asks, so are you getting a divorce? She says, yes we are. When they ask why, she hesitates for a moment. But then she decides to stick to her words. The kids are old enough to understand. She tells them he did something bad. Janie says, did he cheat on you? Eileen's a bit baffled by that question, but says, yes he did.
After this they go into the process of getting a divorce, and then a few months later, they're divorced. Eric has the kids on the weekends, he gets himself a nice house with rooms for the kids to stay in.
Eileen's parents strongly disapproved of the divorce, they were upset at her, and told her the divorce was her fault. That's what happens if you act the way you do. What was that poor man supposed to do? And who's going to marry a woman with two kids? They say. She can't believe them. They're supporting Eric over their own daughter. She tells them they made her this way. It was their toughness and strict expectations that made her this way, it's their fault. Her parents can't believe what they heard. They're furious. They say, how dare you talk to your parents like that? All we did was want the best for you, made sure you were a well accepted and successful woman. Eileen storms out.
The year is 2005. Janie is 14 and Ryan is 11. Eileen is 41 and used to being single despite her parents judging her decision all the time, just like how they judge everything else about her.
She fully dedicated herself to her work and didn't date anyone else. Meanwhile Eric got himself a new young girlfriend. It bothers Eileen that the kids spend time with both of them on the weekends. She says his girlfriend shouldn't come with them. Eric says he doesn't see the problem, and that Eileen's being too controlling and uptight again.
One of these days, Eileen is called to a parent-teacher meeting. She hopes to hear good news about the kids. It's all okay, their grades are good, they're doing well at school. She's relieved. She meets the school counselor. His name is Keith Langville. They talk about the kids, everything's well, he seems to be a good man.
Keith seems happy to talk with Eileen. He makes an unexpected offer. He asks Eileen if she'd like to talk again later, outside of school. Eileen is surprised, she doesn't know what to say, she considered saying that she's busy, but for some reason she just took the offer. What's the worst thing that could happen? She surprised herself with her decision.
Eileen was surprised by how much she was looking forward to this meeting. She thought it wouldn't matter to her all that much but caught herself thinking about it at work and at home.
When the time came, she tried to dress casual but nicer than usual, she didn't know why she cared, but didn't want to look too carefree next to him. She found her nice clothes from the back of her closet. At home, it's always comfortable, old clothes. And work clothes for work. No time for nice clothes. But now there was, maybe that's why she was excited. Ever since she had kids she had no time to herself with both the kids and work.
When she arrived, Keith looked friendly, he's a good looking man, he was dressed casually and greeted her kindly. They chatted for a while at a small cafe. It was fun and relaxing. Something Eileen didn't experience in a while. He was sweet, and charming but in a calming type of way. Near the end, he asked what she thought of this situation. She didn't know what to say, she said, it was great talking with him but she's not sure what this is or why they did it. She felt like she was caught off guard by this question. He said, I'd say this is some kind of date. Doesn't need to be a romantic one, but it's a date between a woman and a man. He said that kindly, and in a way where it somehow felt assuring rather than baffling. Eileen felt confused on why he wanted to go out on a date with her when they just met. When she asked he said, I don't have any intentions, you just caught my eye among the other parents. I haven't met you before, but you seem like an interesting person. I want to get to know you more. I hope it doesn't come off the wrong way. Eileen felt flattered deep inside, but didn't know what to think. After she went home, without realising she thought a lot about this comment.
Later, they started talking more and more, he was a great man. Albeit two years younger than her. And even though she didn't want to admit it to herself at first, she couldn't deny that she found herself catching feelings for him. She didn't know where this was going or if it was appropriate to be dating someone from the kids' school.
But somehow it ended up that they got romantic anyway. When Janie found this out eventually, she thought it was ridiculous that she was dating the school counselor and that she should stop. This started a little argument between them that cooled down quickly, but Eileen had to remind her daughter she can date whoever she wants. Janie wasn't convinced and was embarrassed about the relationship. When Ryan found out, while he seemed to be a bit weirded out by it at first, he didn't have a particularly strong reaction to it like Janie did. Now what was left is how Eric would react, and her parents... But she wasn't planning on telling them anytime soon. Which would cause trouble for her later.
As time went on, she got closer and closer with Keith. He was a very kind man. She could tell why he was the counsellor. They were officially together in each other's eyes, but not many knew that. Keith's friends and family knew, he'd comfortably told them about Eileen. But on the other hand Eileen's parents or friends had no clue. Eventually her friends found out, even Eric found out(it didn't go as badly as she thought it would, he seemed okay with it)... But her parents, she could just not tell her parents about this. She thought to herself, why does she have to tell them anyway? She always tried to find excuses because she knew they'd judge both her and Keith.
Inevitably, all this hiding and shame became too obvious. It came to the spotlight that Eileen was hiding Keith, as if ashamed of him. This led to their first fight. Keith calmly told Eileen that if she feels embarrassed of him then they shouldn't be together. And then he left. Their relationship was over. Even though Eileen wouldn't want to admit it to herself this break up broke her. She felt that Keith was making her a better, happier, calmer person. It was the first time she felt that way and now it was gone because she didn't cherish it.
Eileen has had a smoking addiction that she always swears she's going to get rid of but can never stop(she only managed to stop during pregnancy for the kids, but it was very hard and she started right after). She started in the last year of high school. She always says she'll quit but she never really does. It's the stress that always gets to her that makes her want the relaxation of a cigarette. She can never let go of that. She tries to hide it from the kids, but they know.
After her relationship with Keith ended, she, without even realising found herself with her soothing cigarettes once again. But at this moment she couldn't care less that she was smoking. Just like all the other times she starts smoking out of stress. She was alone at home, the kids were at school and her work was done early today. She got herself a drink with that cigarette. And without even realising she wallowed in drunkenness.
Right as she was about to fall asleep with the soothing effects of the alcohol, she heard a car pull up to the driveway. She couldn't bother getting up at this point but this mystery person had the keys anyway. Turns out it was Eric. He wanted to talk about both of their new relationships, but didn't know Eileen was very drunk.
With Eric's friskiness and Eileen's drunkenness, one thing led to another and unexpectedly they found themselves in bed. Eileen woke up with a pounding headache. She got up groaning to wash her face and just as she did that she heard the door open and the kids saying they're back from school. Suddenly she felt the panic kick in and forgot all about what happened. All that's on her mind was to get Eric out of the house.
She rushed to the bed and violently shook him to wake him up quickly. He looked agitated, but there was no time to be agitated. She couldn't believe what was happening.
When the kids went to their rooms, she made sure that Eric sneaked out with all his clothes without the kids noticing. But right as Eric got in the car and was going to leave, Janie got out of her room and saw the car through the window.
She questioned why her dad came over, Eileen, looking exhausted just tried to quickly come up with an excuse by saying he dropped something over. When Janie said, dropped what over? Also you look terrible, what's wrong? Eileen did not know what to say. She just said it's nothing, she's tired and it doesn't matter, and went back up to her room.
She just laid on her bed and started staring off to the ceiling and then what she did hit her. Why did she sleep with Eric? What was wrong with her? How could she do this? She couldn't believe herself as the memories came flooding back and she was filled with so much shame and anger for herself. Sure, she was emotional and drunk but it doesn't give her the right to do something so stupid! Is what she thought to herself.
Her mind suddenly went blank as she realised one thing. She did not use protection. Or did she? She started frantically searching the room for a trace of a wrapper but to no avail. She couldn't believe herself once again.
She had no choice but to take a pregnancy test. But what if? What would she say to the kids, to her parents, to Keith, to everyone? How could she explain this mess if she really was pregnant? She had no choice but to quickly get dressed and run to a pharmacy. But she didn't want to go to her usual one. What if there's someone she knows there? She got in her car, and drove far to a pharmacy she never went to before. She shamefully purchased a pregnancy test.
At home, after taking the test and waiting for the results, she was the most anxious she'd ever been. When she saw that the result said positive, she lost her mind. She was shocked and didn't know what to do. She couldn't believe how irresponsible she'd become. How would she explain this to anyone? Well, she guessed there was only one choice which was to get rid of it without telling anyone. But right as she thought that she heard a knock on the door and rushed to open it. It was Eric.
He was wondering the same thing and had gotten her a pregnancy test. She got furious. She said, he was not drunk, how could he do this? Plus, he's dating a girl isn't he? And why didn't he use protection, What's wrong with him? They had a big argument, but had to keep it outside so the kids won't hear. In the end, Eileen wanted to hide the pregnancy from Eric but he found out anyway. He was mad at her for hiding it, saying it's his right to know about his child. Eric, despite everything, still seemed happy about having a child which further frustrated Eileen. She told him they can't keep it but he disagreed. "What will we tell everyone, what will we tell the kids?" She questioned. Eric was seemingly trying to put the idea of them getting back together on the table which made Eileen furious. She reminded him the reason for their divorce was his affair.
Later at night Eileen received a call from her parents congratulating her about the pregnancy and getting back with Eric. She couldn't believe that he did this again. Plus, he lied about them getting back together? She simply couldn't believe it.
She immediately dialed Eric on the phone.
Eileen confronted Eric, horrified at what he'd done. He never gave her a chance with these things and forced his impulsive plans onto her. Now, she had to have the baby. And what about Eric? He wasn't even going to be there for her because they weren't really getting back together. Even if they did get back together (which she never would do), he still wouldn't be there for her she could bet.
Eric tried to convince her, told her it's the best for the family and that he still loves her, if she said she wants him he'd drop his girlfriend in a heartbeat... But this further upset Eileen. She said you need to tell them we aren't getting back together. She knew she'd be judged extremely harshly for this decision by her parents, she couldn't even imagine their response but just could not get back with Eric over his schemes just like that. He told her they should at least try to be together until the baby is born but she told him no. She said what difference would it make if he's with her or not, he's still the exact same person he was when they divorced and he still wouldn't care for her. Plus, she reminded him of the reason for their divorce again.
He said, but what about your family? My family? It's not just about us(which they'd judge us very harshly, you should think about that) , but they'd also never accept this baby. Think about that.
And so, they, with Eileen feeling very frustrated and stuck, decided on a temporary marriage. They'd get married before the baby is born then divorce after, for approval by their parents. She hated this. But she also needed her parents approval so badly she could never really not care what they thought and felt obligated to do anything for their approval even though she'd never admit it to herself openly. Now all that's left is living with the shame of this and explaining it to the kids. She was even more frustrated because she knew Eric would try to make this permanent. She knew he wouldn't play by their rules but had to oblige anyway.
She didn't want to lie to the kids. They were old enough and she always wanted to be honest with them. She wanted to truly be close with them rather than always putting strict boundaries like her own parents did. So even though she knew this situation was utterly humiliating, she tried to explain it the best she could. The kids were very surprised by this, and not very supportive of it. But Eileen tried to stop an argument from happening by explaining once again that there was nothing she could do and her parents already knew. Janie told her that she always does whatever her parents want and she can make her own decisions as an adult, she doesn't have to care what they think all the time.
This baffled Eileen and Janie's straightforwardness when talking to her almost offended her but she just calmly told them to go back to whatever they were doing.
She thought about Keith, and felt a deep wave of sadness and shame wash over. She felt like everything in her life was going wrong, she really wanted to smoke but she couldn't even do that because of the baby. She thought this was all her fault and she messed everything up. She didn't want Keith to know about the marriage.
Months went on, Eileen was very stressed. Her boss and co-workers were surprised to find out her and Eric are getting back together and having a baby. Eric seemed proud to be telling everyone, which made her even more upset. And he clearly didn't even care about that girl he was dating. Eileen didn't like that girl, but she felt bad for her and hated Eric even more.
Eric kept pressuring her for the wedding to happen as soon as possible. In the end, before she started showing visibly they got the marriage out of the way. Eileen wanted something simple and quick but of course Eric found ways to make it frustratingly extraordinary, which Eileen hated.
Later she gave birth to baby Lena Chung on May 16, 2005. Then Eileen insisted on the divorce but was judged very harshly by parents from both sides for this decision.
A few months later:
Eileen and Keith are back together.
Despite their argument then separation, Keith and Eileen both couldn't handle being away from one another, and Keith forgave her and made her promise that they'll be more open with each other and about their relationship to other people.
Eileen hesitated at first, but she knew she loved him, so she agreed in the end. She finally made her relationship with Keith public and introduced him to her parents. They judged her quite harshly for this decision. They judged Keith because he wasn't a "good Korean man like Eric" and how she's dating someone younger, and they claimed it was a mistake divorcing Eric once again. And Eileen was upset with them once again so she got out of there and apologised to Keith for what happened there. He was caring and understanding once again and told her that he understands she can't control what her parents act like, and won't resent her for their behaviour. This made Eileen love him even more, but feel more terrible about herself that she isn't as good hearted towards him.
Now, the year is 2008.
Eileen and Eric are 44, Janie is 17, Ryan is 14, and Lena is 3 years old.
They are doing well. Things are going as usual.
Eileen and Keith been together for almost three years now.
Janie has got a boyfriend that Eileen strongly disapproves of because of how she thinks he's a bad influence on Janie and not a good guy. Janie also disapproves of Eileen's relationship and finds it embarrassing, so they have arguments about this topic often recently.
Eileen during 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013: Eileen kept working hard and kept her workaholic spirit. She tried to give up smoking once again during 2010 and 2013, but failed once again. She married Keith in 2012. Her parents didn't come to the wedding.
Eric Chung (born 1964):
Eric Chung(정) is a Korean-American man in his 40s who works as a sales director. He is ‘charming’ but unreliable, smooth, easygoing, and puts on a ‘cool dad’ persona, he likes to feel important but avoids responsibility.
He is the father of three kids; the oldest, Janie(17-22 years old, born 1991), middle child Ryan(14-19 years old, born 1994), and the youngest Lena(2-7 years old, born 2005). He got divorced from Eileen Chung in 2004 because of an affair he had back then.
Eric's parents are Joon-seok Chung (정 준석)(father) and Hye-jin Yun(윤 혜진).
Eric's Korean name is Hyun-woo(현우), his parents use this name when referring to him.
Eric's parents are wealthy and indulgent people. They always believe that their son is the best and always make excuses for his mistakes. They love spoiling and pampering Eric, but they judge Eileen because they think no one's good enough for their son. They also love spoiling their grandkids.
He married Eileen in 1989.... (These parts were already described during Eileen's part, so while describing Eric's version I didn't feel the need to go through all of that again because it's unnecessary and will bore the reader, I will just go over the important points about Eric throughout the years that weren't mentioned during Eileen's text.)
The reason why Eric is the way he is, is because of his upbringing in which his parents spoiled him and cherished him a lot and always excused his mistakes. While it made him confident, it also made him selfish and too impulsive to act without thinking of the consequences.
Eric had two affairs before Eileen found out and divorced him. He still doesn't fully believe he was in the wrong because of how the affairs happened because Eileen didn't give him enough attention (in fact, he might not believe hes wrong at all but he says he thinks he's wrong in order to apologise to Eileen and to try and get her back).
He often takes the kids to fun places on the weekends when he has them. This sometimes bothers Eileen as she sometimes finds the activities too risky and secretly feels afraid that they're going to enjoy their time with Eric better, but she'd never admit that to herself. She often argued with Eric about taking them to places that seem too wild.
During their marriage, Eric had a flirtatious relationship at work with a young, French woman who newly started working in their company which bothered Eileen a lot and started arguments. The relationship only ended once the lady left the company, and this woman was who Eric was caught having an affair with leading to the divorce.
Eric during 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013:
He broke up with that girlfriend he had that Eileen disliked, he got with another girl and even got engaged in 2012 as well, but this was just a show, a desperate attempt to make Eileen jealous as he still secretly wanted to be with Eileen. He didn't end up marrying that girl either because he was never truly happy with any of his empty relationships. He tried to remain 'cool' and happy with his life but he felt a void which he tried to fill with pointless relationships and empty one night stands. Despite all the wrong things in their relationship with Eileen he could still never replace her and couldn't find it in himself to have a true loving marriage again.
Sung-ho Jang(장 성호) and Mi-sook Kim (김 미숙):
Sung-ho Jang (born 1936)and Mi-sook Kim (born 1944) are the parents of Eileen Jang. They are in their 70's They are 1st generation immigrants to the USA from South Korea. They immigrated in 1964.
They always had very high expectations of Eileen. Sung-ho is hardworking, serious, and extremely disciplined. He believes that his daughter should be the best at everything, including marriage.
Mi-sook is strict, a perfectionist. She's judgy. She judges Eileen and her decisions openly.
Joon-seok Chung (정 준석) and Hye-jin Yun (윤 혜진):
Joon-seok Chung (born 1933)and Hye-jin Yun (born 1940)are the parents of Eric Chung.
They are wealthy first generation immigrants and they immigrated in 1966 (when Eric was 2 years old). They always gave Eric the most high quality education and treatment he could have.
Joon-seok is a retired doctor, successful and proud, he believes his son is faultless and deserves the best.
Hye-jin is sweeter but still condescending towards Eileen, always making excuses for Eric’s mistakes. She loves spoiling the grandkids, she likes to hand them cash or buy them expensive gifts ‘just because'.
Janie Chung:
Janie Chung was born on April 4, 1991. She is a fast talker, is witty like her mother and she is into fashion and beauty. She likes taking care of her appearance. Janie wants to study fashion, and in university she does exactly that.
Janie during 2008:
Janie is 17. She has got a boyfriend which her mom disapproves of. His name is Alfred and he is kind of strange but Janie found him charming at this age. He's a year older than her.
He often took Janie to strange places to hang out and to do romantic activities. They dated until he eventually graduated and moved. Janie later will recall dating him as a bad choice by her younger self.
Janie has friends who also share similar interests as hers, while Janie is primarily into fashion and wants to study fashion, her best friend is primarily into makeup and wants to be a beautician.
Janie during 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013:
When Janie starts college, she still keeps in touch with her high school best friend and they remain close. Janie is doing really well and is happy in college. She dated a few guys but none of them really stuck. Overall, she's happy.
Ryan Chung:
Ryan Chung was born on September 8, 1994. Both him and Janie inherited their mothers witty way of talking. Ryan is smart but humorous.
He is into computers and maths.
He also can speak Korean better than Janie in order to impress their grandparents and to tease Janie for it.
When Ryan was seven years old, he was diagnosed with tourette syndrome. But he only has a mild case of tourettes so it doesn't impact him severely, especially because he took medication for it from a young age (after his diagnosis). His tics are mostly things that aren't too severe such as cracking bones, head jerks, and things as such.
He broke his right arm and wrist many times when he was younger, at first it was purely an accident, but the injury became chronic because of the bone cracking tics re-injuring or preventing the bones there from healing. This caused his right hand to be weaker and he developed carpal tunnel syndrome. So he will some days wear a wrist support brace.
This injury also made Ryan become more comfortable with using his left hand for activities such as writing to prevent pain. His medication causes tremors as a side effect, worsening the condition of his right hand and wrist.
Ryan met Amaya Salazar in high school when he was seventeen. They became close friends in a really short time as Amaya was a likeable and friendly girl. He also got introduced to Amaya's friends and introduced his own friends to them and grew his friend circle this way.
They started dating when they were eighteen and are still dating at nineteen. They are happy together and they both enjoy spending time together and working on their separate hobbies together.
Lena Chung:
Lena was born on May 16, 2005. She's a funny and charming girl. She can easily convince people to do what she wants for her because of her charm and cuteness. She's adventurous like her father and is quick to get along with people.
Keith Langville:
Keith Langville is born on June 21, 1967. He is the school counselor at Janie and Ryan's school. He's empathetic and understanding, sweet and calm.
He was raised by a single mother and never met his father. His mother lost her right arm when Keith was a baby yet still had to raise him with no support from anyone else because they didn't have anyone else. Keith's mother is a caring and relaxed mom. She always wanted Keith to do what he wanted to do in life. Keith's upbringing greatly impacted who he became.
Alfred Slora:
Alfred Slora was born on February 19th, 1990. Alfred is Janie's high school boyfriend. He is from the UK, Yorkshire. His father runs a company which took his family to the US for a year, that's when Alfred attended 12th grade in America and met and dated Janie.
Alfred has an interest in guns. He developed this interest in America where guns are legal.
Alfred is a bit strange, he is romantic but in a lewd way towards Janie, he talks in an almost calm type of voice.
Alfred is a year older than Janie and was attending 12th grade when Janie was attending 11th grade. They dated at this time. Then he moved back to the UK after their break up at the end of the school year.
Amaya Salazar:
Amaya was born on July 26th, 1994. She is Mexican American but she cannot speak Spanish well because she was raised speaking mostly English.
Her hobbies and interests are video games, drawing, and websites such as YouTube where she likes filming fun videos about her interests and life for fun.
She met Ryan in highschool at seventeen and she was close friends with him after a short time because they got along well. Their humor went well together and they had fun together. They started dating at eighteen and are still dating today.

"I see you've got that cold fellow in there. Not to be one to judge, but being cold in this heat is one thing that doesn't sit right with me."
How does he handle stressful situations (ex. The cataclysm)?
He accepts the situation. He doesn't go in denial or pretend everything will be fine, but he just tries to live with it. He got this mindset every since he got struck by lightning when he was a kid and used this method to cope with the trauma and with the fact that he got picked on and stared at throughout his school life for his scars.
View on fema: he's against fema, and also is against judging people by their looks similar to the Leper Guy. Because he also has a risk of being accused due to looking unusual.
Family: he has a fiancée whom he got separated from while hiding out during the cataclysm. Last time she was visiting her family and couldn't come back to their apartment after the cataclysm started. And he himself got kicked out of his own house by the people he let in. He doesn't know if she's dead or alive but wants to find her.
Backstory: especially after being struck by lightning, he used to be really tense and nervous. He was afraid to speak up or do what he wanted to do. But when he graduated and finally felt like his life was in his control he realized all that fear was irrational and people will judge you either way and it really doesn't matter. So he started forcing himself to speak frankly about things and do things he wanted to do. This way he got out of his shell and became more relaxed and carefree as a person. He still has his doubts, but he learnt to shoo them away easier and learnt that not being nervous about everything makes life worth living.
Career: He used to be a graphic artist working from home before the cataclysm.
