Sometimes, I start laughing just thinking about Ernest Frankenstein because like...where did he go? Where did an entire kid go? How did we lose an entire kid? Did he go off to a military academy then come back when everything's over like

For the former, if we're trying to be charitable, maybe Victor was so sunk into his vengeful madness that he couldn't even think of the fact that he still had one not-dead brother.

But, assuming Victor was correct in his insistence that Elizabeth, William, Henry, and his dead dad were haunting him , cheering him on and encouraging his retribution, I love the idea of one of them going, "Hey, man, you can chase this thing all you like but also: there's still a live one back at home."

But also: "Wait, which one was Ernest?"

For the latter: we know he wants to be a soldier at one point, so imagine him "la la la!" skipping home from summer break at the military academy but the only one left in the house is the Creature, who doesn't kill himself in the Arctic and instead comes back to the Frankenstein home and is sitting awkwardly in a chair that's way too small for him in the front parlor when Ernest walks in like, "?????????!!!!!!"

And the Creature fiddles with this sleeves and goes, "Look, I can explain. Also, technically, I guess you're my uncle? And I have no money or legal identity so I'm gonna have to bunk here if that's cool."

Unwilling lab partners and what if it works? What if it actually works, but they both realize, "Oh, shit, this is actually way harder than he made it seem." They have to keep sourcing different parts because, "Damn it, another finger fell off." Or, "Damn, I didn't leave a seam allowance for the back skin we had to replace."

It technically works but Victor comes back looking definitely dead and he's furious but also:

They're going about their business in the manor and a servant sees resurrected past-his-expiration-date Victor and immediately throws up and faints.

And while Victor freaks out and Ernest frantically fans the servant to bring him back round, the Creature looks over the top of his book at Victor and goes, "See? Not so fun, is it?"

Last year I found contemporary photos for each part of Jonathan's journey to Transylvania. This year, I thought I might go one better. Sound on.

Some notes under the cut.

All clips are from the 1890s (mostly Lumière footage) except Exeter and Romania, which are from 1935, as I couldn't find anything earlier. I tried to avoid anything obviously anachronistic in those shots but I might have missed things.

Peleș Castle is standing in for Castle Dracula. It's not in Transylvania but it is in the Carpathians, and I couldn't resist the shot of it peeking out through the trees. It was built between 1873 and 1914 but 1890s postcards show it as mostly complete.

Bram Stoker doesn't specify how Jonathan gets from London to Munich. The route via Brussels was suggested by Cook's Continental Time Table, Steamship and Air Services Guide 1892 and gave me an excuse to include the train pulling into Cologne (#trainfiend).

The music is this version of the Jonathan Creek theme tune, which is an adaptation of Saint-Saëns' Danse Macabre.

The implication of Victor being an undergrad in the novel is incredibly funny because, yes, it explains so much of his behavior and audacity, but it also means Victor's apartment could've been some sort of student housing, which means there were other undergrads living there, too.

Which means when Victor wakes up to the Creature standing by his bed like ☺️, and Victor freaks out and runs away, the Creature could have ostensibly wandered into the hallway after him, only to be met with a pack of incredibly drunk-after-an-all-night-1818-rager yet well-meaning frat boys.

Who were so blasted that they were just like, "Dude, what, do you play rugby? Holy shit, he's fuckin' huge, look at this fuckin' guy! Absolute unit!" And they all whooped and hollered and just ushered the Creature into their dorm to keep the party going.

And the Creature was just like, "?????" but very pleased to find other people vaguely shaped like him, so he lets them because he may be just minutes old but he knew early on all he really wanted was one (1) buddy and now there's, like, a herd of them and they're all having a blast.

When the guys inevitably pass out, sloshed beyond all sense, he just sits and waits for them to wake up and when they do, later that morning, he's poking at one of them to make sure the guy is still breathing, and the kid wakes up and yells for a second and squints at the 8 foot-tall (rugby???? player????) guy in their dorm and is like, "Shit, what is that?"

And another one squints at him and goes, "I don't fuckin' know, bro, but he can throw us so hard. Did you see how David just...fuckin'...flew out the window last night? Just hurled David like it was no big deal. That was awesome."

David groans and puts his head under his pillow because his headache is awful but he lets out a pained, muffled, "that was awesome" in agreement.

So in a rare case of wholesome frat boy camaraderie, this herd of college roommate boys, all of whom are dumb as rocks but well-meaning, just take the Creature in because, "There's this huge fucking monster guy and it's the coolest thing we've ever seen."

This would possibly mean the Creature is socialized to be a dumb-as-rocks frat boy, but because I cannot allow that to happen and because there is no universe in which he would not be into poetry, he somehow also gets socialized by liberal arts majors and is just as Sensitive™, it rubs off on his frat buddies, who start saying things like, "No, man, it's Sturm und Drang, it's, like, the fuckin' vast rolling of the soul that, like...fuckin' eschews Enlightenment rationalism."

But some of the boys' lingo inevitably rubs off on the Creature so when, months later, Victor comes back to get all of his things with Henry post-mental breakdown, he bumps into a crowd of rowdy guys playfully jostling each other, and that crowd includes an 8-foot tall dude in a letterman jacket holding a volume of Goethe in one hand and a tankard of beer in the other, and he scoffs down at Victor and goes, "Accursed Creator! Why didst thou abandon me in my hour of need? Fuckin' lame."

And all his buddies go, "Yoooooo!" and high five.

I’m still reading Frankenstein and I know it’s tragic but Victor’s dumb shit ass is hilarious.

Like he busts ass for two years solid to Create Life and thinks, “yeah, I COULD do a first draft, but fuck it let’s go balls to the wall” and pops a redbull

and then the second he actually DOES IT like the SECOND the massive damn guy he’s made opens his eyes he’s like “welp. that was a mistake. nap time” like he doesn’t even put him in a room or anything, just lets this fresh ass eight foot tall baby wander around unattended

And then he wakes up and with all the energy of Ah Fuck I Left The Stove On he sees The Creature look at him and Smile. Literally Smile. The first time The Creature sees him he Smiles, like he’s Happy

And Victor goes all “JINKIES gang, w-we gotta get outta here!” *cartoony noises* runs away. Imagine seeing that shit happen. I’m losing my mind

But you're wrong on the topic of language, it comes up many times! In fact, only Victor's time at the university, and the conversation between Walton and the Creature is missing, among all the mentions of characters of different nationalities speaking with each other

In letter IV (in the 1818 edition), Walton writes about Victor:

On perceiving me, the stranger addressed me in English, although with a foreign accent.

Safie's language (the Creature learned French because she was learning French):

I soon perceived that although the stranger uttered articulate sounds and appeared to have a language of her own, she was neither understood by nor herself understood the cottagers

Mentions of The Creature speaking or reading are always about French:

Fortunately the books were written in the language the elements of which I had acquired at the cottage; they consisted of Paradise Lost, a volume of Plutarch's Lives, and the Sorrows of Werter.

'By your language, stranger, I suppose you are my countryman;—are you French?' 'No; but I was educated by a French family, and understand that language only. [Volume II, Chapter VII, 1818 edition]

After Victor destroys the female creation and threw the remains and his chemical instruments into the sea, he's found by the Irishmen who spoke English:

As it was, I merely remarked that they spoke English, and I therefore addressed them in that language. “My good friends,” said I, “will you be so kind as to tell me the name of this town and inform me where I am?” [Volume III, Chapter III, 1818 edition]

The nurse of the jail he was put in afterwards:

Her tone expressed her entire indifference; she addressed me in English, and the voice struck me as one that I had heard during my sufferings [Volume III, Chapter IV, 1818 edition]

The magistrate who accused him:

Fortunately, as I spoke my native language, Mr. Kirwin alone understood me; (...)

His countenance expressed sympathy and compassion; he drew a chair close to mine, and addressed me in French— [Volume III, Chapter IV, 1818 edition]

And also the book has several mentions of various character's nationalities, like Walton's lieutenant is described as an Englishman, Frankenstein's family is Genevese but the families living around them are married to the French and English etc etc.

Funnily enough, noone is described as speaking German, despite so much of the plot taking place in Germany (both Ingolstadt, as well as the French family's cottage are located in Germany)
