Making GIFs load faster

AKA why are some of my GIFs being turned into videos?

Overview

We’re experimenting with serving GIFs as MP4 videos instead of GIFV (which typically serves animated WebP) on the web to a small subset of folks on Tumblr, not everyone. This does not affect anyone using the mobile apps.

The performance improvements from using MP4s in this way are huge, and will make Tumblr load animated images faster and use less data in almost every circumstance, with no discernible loss in quality.

This conversion only applies to specific types of GIFs, such as ones without transparency in the first frame. We’ve tested this conversion on thousands of GIFs, and we’re still tuning it to be virtually indistinguishable from the original GIF.

XKit’s “Vanilla Videos” extension was causing a bug with this experiment, but a recent new XKit version release has fixed that issue.

If you’re served an MP4 instead of a GIF, clicking on the image will still open it in a lightbox, which you can download as GIFV or GIF, depending on what’s served.

Since this is still just an experiment, there is no way to opt-out yet; adding some kind of opt-out (on the creator and/or consumer side) is a possibility though.

If you’re served a GIF as MP4 and it looks wrong, please contact Support with a link to the image and what looks wrong about the conversion. We need examples to help us improve the experience. Also, please do not send duplicate support requests.

Tumblr and the No Good, Very Bad Idea

So. You might have heard the news that, as of July 12, Tumblr is testing out converting GIFs into looping MP4 videos to help pages load faster:

This is bad. Tumblr is the only mainstream site left where you can post GIFs and they’ll continue to be GIFs - well, sort of, as Tumblr previously tested and implemented turning GIF into GIFV with the same purpose, and it decreases the quality of the original GIF file. Turning them into MP4 videos is even worse.

GIFs are GIFs. They’re not videos. Creators spend hours making a GIF that will look good as a GIF, not as a video.

I hope I don’t need to explain to anyone why continuing to screw over creators is bad for a site like Tumblr, whose continued existence depends on creators not giving up on it, and why gif-making is important to fandom existence.

I for one will not continue to make any more gifsets if I know they’ll just be turned into MP4 files. It’s disappointing to spend my time making something and watch it become ugly once it’s uploaded - and that’s what is already happening without the MP4 conversion.

WHAT CAN WE DO ABOUT IT?

Don’t bother sending a support ticket! They will tell you to do what I’m about to tell you:

Send an ask or submission to @wip​ - the official “work in progress” blog of Tumblr where people can send in suggestions.

Their ask box is open every Monday from 6AM to 6PM EST.

COLOR TABLE TUTORIAL

No one asked for this, but I’m in a tutorial mood so here we go! :)

You know when you make a gifset and want the colors to be the same? So you use the same PSD on all of them, but they’re still different? This one’s for you.

1.) Open your reference image (can be the other gif you’re trying to match, a psd, png, etc., doesn’t matter)

2.) Click Save for Web like you would when you go to save a gif, but DON’T save the gif

3.) Click the dropdown arrow on the top right corner of the color table

4.) Click save color table

5.) Name the file and click save

Now choose a gif scene that has somewhat similar colors (warm or cool toned basically) This one is pinkish so it’ll look good with the color table

You can edit the gif to be as close color wise to the example, such as adding a certain PSD or adding selective layers to the gif to get warmer or cooler tones. The point of loading a color table is to get the EXACT same color hues in each gif. In this example gif shown above, the colors are already along the same lines so I don’t even need to add any adjustment layers. 6.) Once you’re ready, go to Export for Web and click color table dropdown again, but this time click Load Color Table 

7.) Select your saved file and click Open.

8.) Then save the gif and it’s ready

This is really helpful when you’re trying to get all gifs in a color set to be the same colors. Hope at least one person gets some use out of it.

okay, so it has come to my attention that @swag-lisa​ has reposted my gifs, cropped the watermark and put their own. even their web theme is the same as mine, this is not okay and i suppose that they are reposting others’ work too. these are literally my gifs just the watermark is cropped. at this point, should we put the watermark in the middle of the gif? is it so hard to reblog, do you have to repost it and claim it as yours? i’m just really frustrated at this point. this is NOT ok.
