Why is nobody talking about the Indianapolis shooting? Four of the victims were Sikh and the facility targeted was well known for its high Sikh population. The intent of the shooter has not been confirmed yet, but that doesn’t change the fact that this is heavily traumatising for the Punjabi and Sikh community. I hate that I’m finding out about this nearly 20 hours later. This is incredibly heartbreaking, my thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families.
Articles explaining the situation:
1. Overview with emphasis on Sikh victims
2. General report on the incident
3. Anti Sikh discrimination in the US (1) (2)
Here is also the verified GoFundMe for the victims

also also also can yall stop talking about what its like living in a “liberal” space like its safe to be gay anywhere in this fucking country. racial and gender divides in community aside, do yall even know the rates of houselessness and jailing that Black people, queer and otherwise, suffer in these places you have attributed as liberal because of outdated political concepts?
keep these numbers in mind (and pre-gentrification population numbers too) before your fix your fucking mouths on some shit you dont know
Really, they’re only liberal in the way many white abled cis gays are liberal. Aka conservatism repackaged as “liberal” centralism.
Like most people don’t like to admit this, but one of the reasons a lot of us have so many mental health issues is because we live in a world that has basically become untenable. People can’t afford basic necessities, let alone to cultivate their interests or take breaks and rest or do any of the things necessary for good mental health. People my age are wracked with debt, working at jobs they hate or studying topics they hate, living in a shitty apartment with five roommates. We live in a world that’s very hard to be healthy in. So while yeah, a lot of people obviously do have mental illnesses that would need medication no matter what, they are greatly exacerbated by these issues, and a lot of people have basically just been thrust into an eternal situational depression. So if that doesn’t change, medication is just a band-aid.

That’s not normal.
We owe all the gay men and women who came before us an incalculable debt for living in the world they did and still making art, writing poetry, taking pictures of themselves loving the people they loved. Please love each other just as fiercely as they must have looked to the future and loved us.

This even being a possibility is inhumane.
Its so deeply heartbreaking to know that not just technology but the infrastructure of the world is alienating to people because extreme isolation is seen a reasonable punishment and not the crime against humanity it is.
In case you were wondering what Republicans have been up to since losing the 2020 election, it’s doubling down on voter suppression - a blatant attempt to lock in minority rule and ensure that they never lose again, even though their party and positions are getting less and less popular.
Experts predict that Republicans could take back the House in 2022 through gerrymandering alone. That has dire implications - with the House, they could unjustly impeach Joe Biden and prevent any progressive legislation from passing, among other things. In the nightmare scenario where they win back both the House and Senate, our democracy is effectively over. Not being dramatic. Republicans are openly opposed to majority rule and fair elections. They will not make the mistake of allowing everyone a free and fair election ever again if they regain power.
So what do we do?
First, support HR.1, the For the People Act, a bill that has already passed the House.
Next:
- Fight like hell to keep the House and Senate in 2022,
- Support abolishing the filibuster so Democrats can pass bills to protect voting rights, and
- Organize and volunteer.
I’m all in on our current fights - passing the $15 minimum wage and ending the filibuster - but don’t lose sight of the fact that we can’t even have those fights if Republicans get their way.
Voting rights must be our top priority in 2022 and beyond.
