just saw a pigeon doing the puffed up courtship dance thing to another pigeon, and as he was strutting around he suddenly stopped for a split second to do a very brief preen-peck at his own side, then returned to the strutting around. and i surprised myself by instantly losing respect for the male pigeon in that moment, like come on man i appreciate you had an itch or whatever but how is she supposed to feel special when you're getting distracted by bullshit like that? which on reflection i don't endorse, i mean those are pretty harsh dating norms i'm imposing on these pigeons, from a total outsider perspective, for no reason. probably not all girl pigeons are as uptight about that sort of thing as i would apparently be if i was a girl pigeon, maybe she even found it endearing who knows, i don't know her. it's none of my business really. sorry pigeons.

its called Freeway Park and while it is one of the most interesting single examples of Brutalism in the united states and im proud of it, it is so poorly designed in terms of public safety that it has been renovated twice(?) but continues to be geographically troubling, as its design has facilitated a lot of murders over the years. it was the subject of a funny but gruesome article in the STranger in 2002 called Topography of Terror. the city doesnt keep official tally of how many murders or assaults have happened IN the park but two men in their 30s were stabbed nonfatally during a robbery there earlier this year, for example.

the thing that i find totally baffling about one night only (the rom-com that's like the purge but for premarital sex) is that if you wanted to make a rom-com about two people connecting on a night where there's a lot of pressure for them to be dating or hooking up with someone, you could just make a movie set on valentine's day. and if you're making a movie with an absolutely wild premise like that one has, you could make a really bizarre and off the wall story like if boots riley made a sex comedy. but this movie has apparently done neither and is just a regular rom-com with the backdrop of a dystopian world. which is really the worst option to pick!

why are gay people still cool to have extra-marital sex? is this homophobic somehow?

is this like. Birthing thing? like we don't want unwed parents? how would that then work if someone is trans, having sex with someone of the same gender identity of them, but with different reproductive organs? is that not allowed? is that transphobic??

is divorce more common because people are rushing into marriages just to have sex, or less common because if you leave our partner you can't have sex anymore? are there people who treat getting married like regular dating?

teenagers do have sex sometimes. this implies you can have pre-marital sex completely legally if it's before 18. HOW is the "you can't have sex unless you're married or we will ARREST you" world FAILING to prevent teen pregnancy still????

why would you craft a world like this just to refuse to engage with it meaningfully? The PURGE engaged with its premise meaningfully. The fucking BINGE movie with Skyler Gisondo and Eduardo Franco had a more logical premise than this

we really can’t overstate how damaging it has been to indoctrinate the public with the idea that if they let themselves eat as much as they want, they’ll eat too much. human bodies, when permitted over the long term to eat as much as they want, actually get really, really good at calibrating their hunger and satiety, and will over time eat exactly the right amount for themselves. the common conception of a balanced eater as a minimal or restrained eater is absolutely wrong. balanced eaters eat quite a lot (compared to diet cultural ideas about right intake amounts), and they do so consistently and permanently. healthy, balanced eating isn’t some tightrope walk, it’s a gigantic net of total permission to eat.
