These ‘Beach Animals’ were created by Theo Jansen as a fusion of art and engineering. The kinetic structures walk on their own and get all their energy from the wind.

Re: the last post, the article mentions that some places use clams to test the toxicity of the water. It’s like that in Warsaw- we get our water from the river, and the main water pump has 8 clams that have triggers attached to their shells. If the water gets too toxic, they close, and the triggers shut off the city water supply automatically.
The clams are just better at measuring the water quality than any man-made sensors.

@becomedog, you are so right
EXCELLENT!!
I am so afraid all the goddamn time. I wouldn’t say “anxious”, no, like genuinely sure that something (me) isn’t working the way it should, and everybody’s gonna find out and say it’s my fault. That I deserve my misery. I’m terrified of being me. Most of the time I navigate the world as if I wasn’t myself, I can’t bear it. It’s as if I always look at myself from outside, judging. But not knowing what to do to fix anything. I don’t even dare to know what my real opinions are; expressing them is out of the question. I’m condemned to neutrality. I give off the impression of being aloof, determined to reach my goals, of giving 0 fucks. But in reality, I’m tortured by the thought that my life is passing by, without me making any real choices. I feel stuck. Tired. Helpless. And terribly sad.
My grandmother shared this with me (because I used to train as an opera singer, I have a bit of a reputation in my family as 'the opera singer' even though I don't do it professionally anymore lol).
It's hilarious. I love this kind of copying mechanism humans engage in during a crisis. It's great. XD
(In case anyone is interested, this piece commonly heard played outside of the opera going circles is called 'Nessun Dorma' - "No one shall sleep" from the opera Turandot. It was made famous in the general public eye by the late tenor Pavarotti.)

anyway while I think there is much to blame institutionally for the handling of the coronavirus, i think it is safe to say that american protestant individualism also played a fine role in this mess.
our culture does not value collective effort. we lack the empathy of caring about society as a whole. i am hearing people in public complain about others wearing facemasks. like the idea of caring about the health and safety of other human beings is mocked! like what kind of selfish heartless bullshit is this.
oh and this idea that we should sacrifice the “weak” is reflective of cultural idealologies such as Social Darwinism and Calvinsist theology on predistinaition. these ideologies are so prevelent in our cultural landscape and they perpetuate the notion that some people are inherently more deserving of life and salvation more than others.
