and if you look with eyes that can see, this is just how everything is now. no wonder everyone is going into a collective psychosis over trans people just existing, their entire sense of self must be tied up in these concepts.

also, not all kids actually get that sort of gendered socialization in the first place, like I'm AFAB and brother i was NOT 'female socialized'. i was lucky in that my parents weren't big on gender roles in the first place, so I wasn't getting any messaging about that at home, and thanks to the power of autism any sort of general societal pressures for gender expectations just flew right over my head, so it's always wildly confusing to hear about a lot of that shit.

like what do you mean I'm supposed to feel obligated to wear makeup, when were we supposed to learn that? wait, most women actually feel ashamed of having body hair and have to actively work to be okay with it? why am i supposed to feel insecure about being a tall woman, nobody told me that. what do you mean it's scary to be the only woman in a room full of men, why would i feel safer if another woman showed up, how would adding another stranger change the situation? when did y'all learn this stuff, I feel like i've missed some memos here.

And yeah, now that I'm an adult I understand the messaging that causes a lot of this stuff, but it's just. really not something that i've ever personally experienced. like I was mercilessly bullied for most of my childhood, and it was wildly traumatic; i was actively suicidal in elementary school. my peers were the ones doing it, and it was ALL of them, so. no, i don't find women inherently safer than men, i just engage with people as individuals, and I feel unsafe if they're assholes. at no point does gender factor into the equation.

and people trying to use that bioessentialist shit as a talking point kinda fails to impress me given that i'm walking proof that they're wrong. kinda hard to buy into their bullshit when 90% of the time the arguments are just them saying "Everyone raised as a girl has experienced (thing i've literally never experienced before)". especially because i'm agender, and with my general build (tall, broad, deep voice) I do occasionally get mistaken for a trans woman, even though I'm actually AFAB and not actually woman. so it's pretty rich seeing these people talk about how people raised as girls all have a special solidarity with each other, when my invitation to that table has always been very fucking conditional.

the thing about misogyny is that femininity is both devalued AND forced on women (and those misgendered as women). if you fail to meet the arbitrary standard of Womanly Charm you're ugly and unwanted and hate yourself and if you succeed you're shallow and brainless and weak. if you don't try to conform you're lazy and if you do you're vain. it is not possible to beat this system. feminism needs both "feminine doesn't mean weak or less-than" AND "women don't have to be feminine to have value", and if you are fighting for one of these the people fighting for the other are not your enemies, nor are they privileged over you.

As preposterous and stupid as this fucking movie's premise sounded (for a light-hearted rom-com, and not The Handmaid's Tale) I didn't want to think about it too much until the movie actually came out, and then I could see if it was somehow more intelligent and subversive than the trailer let on, but guess what, it's even worse!

If this is what it takes to get a rom-com greenlit these days, maybe we should just let them die.

Sex workers are thrown under the bus, shown only as thieves who fleece men in the woods at night, while queer sexuality is relegated to a few scenes with Allie’s roommate (a woefully underused Quintessa Swindell) and a handful of pans past blurry same-sex extras making out in the background. “This night is for the straights,” Swindell’s character says to Allie, before saying that queer people have worked around straight laws for centuries.  This is supposed to be a nod to queer resilience, but largely comes off as straightwashing the history of anti-LGBTQ legislation in this country that led towards raids of queer clubs and incarceration of queer people in the not-too-distant past (let alone the current barrage of anti-Trans and LGBTQ legislation currently in the works and on the books). It’s also ignorant of the long and fraught fight for the normalization of age-of-consent laws, which, by the way, did not happen in all states in this very country until 2003. Yes, that’s not even thirty years ago.  By the end, our intrepid protagonists have not had sex with anyone, because this is a film about Romance with a Capital R (and I guess sex is not part of romance!) and for that very same reason they ultimately embrace the fascist state of things. They aren’t the only ones who refuse to fight back. No one in this cursed film is protesting this mandate beyond “repeal” signs in various windows and some creative graffiti (...) (...) If we are supposed to believe that the film is making some subversive statement about the state of sex and bodily autonomy in this country, it cannot end with its leads embracing their chains. That’s just warmed-over conservatism running around in sheep’s clothing.

also, for the unaware: mclaughlin v. florida was a 1964 supreme court case that struck down a florida anti-miscegenation law that criminalized cohabitation (and thus, as implied, sex) between white people and people of color of opposite genders. anti-miscegenation laws made marriage and sexual relationships between white people and people of color, most often specifically black people, a FELONY in several states in the united states up until the 1950s and 1960s. though it was already struck down by the supreme court, the state of alabama didn't repeal their law until 2000! there were THREE ATTEMPTS at codifying anti-miscegenation into the us constitution!

like yes, the issue here is partially straight white people's ignorance on the united states's history of homophobic policy, but it's also really important to recognize that arguably the majority of the issue here is straight white people's ignorance of the united states's history of codifying eugenics and antiblack racism.

the premise could have been interesting as a serious dystopian story, especially taking that history into account, but it wasn't written that way at all. this movie should never have been a fucking romcom making light of the violence the united states (and many other countries) has enacted on any kinds of sexual relationships it deems undesirable.

In France if you suffer from hair loss as a teenage girl and cannot afford a real hair wig the school will try and force you to go to class bald. The school will make you buy a chemotherapy turban, you will buy two different so that the school can choose which one they prefer and you will prove that they are chemotherapy turban and not hijab but once you wear it they will change their mind and say it looks too much like a hijab and insist on you going bald or buying a real hair wig that you cannot afford.

If your doctor makes multiple documents confirming that you suffer from alopecia because of stress and the medicine you have to take for your epilepsy and that wearing a bonnet or something is recommended for your mental health as you’re not ready to go out bald in high school as a teenage girl, instead of admitting they are wrong the school will accuse the doctor of lying and report him to the Ordre des Médecins (equivalent of the General Medical council). Your doctor will find himself asking you for a document stating that you are not Muslim in order to defend himself and prove that no he wasn’t colluding with you so you could wear a substitute for hijab.

In France if you are a North African nurse at a public hospital and wear a fabric surgical cap they will try to make you remove it because apparently it’s a hidden hijab. They will accuse you of going against secularism and when you’ll argue that they are discriminating you by assuming you’re Muslim for a surgical cap on your head they will change their angle and claim that you should wear nothing on your hair because you wear the same surgical cap in multiple bedroom which is unhygienic apparently (which is a bullshit argument cause you wear the same scrub/uniform in different bedrooms as well). They will go as far as claiming that disposable scrub caps (you know the thin papery ones?) are not okay to wear in a hospital even if you change it regularly. And then they will fire you for a lack of hygiene because you wear a surgical cap.

The teenage girl’s story is also not just about racism and Islamophobia it’s also about ableism as the girl is convinced that the real reason the school is trying to push her out is because she had an epilepsy crisis in class and nobody knew what to do and the school nurse was absent. It could have ended badly had her best friend not known what to do to help. Apparently it was bad enough to cancel class for the rest of the day and the teacher was shocked to the point of ending on sick leave.

The French health system is so racist and ableist all while being on the shoulders of foreign (mostly Romanian and Algerian) health care professionals. But the system is so racist they are paid less than the French (often white) doctors and have to obey and report to French doctors even when they actually have more experience than said doctor.

The system is so racist that when my grandpa goes to the hospital for his annual check up for his diabetes and stuff he always makes sure to find one Black or Arab nurse and get on her schedule cause he knows they won’t dismiss him. He couldn’t get on the schedule of a Black or Arab nurse twice only and both times he almost died because his blood sugar got dangerously low in the middle of the night and he kept ringing for help and the white nurse ignored him. (Once I got involved and the only reason I didn’t punch the nurse and got arrested was because my grandpa told me not to.)

Like when I was between 1 and 2 years old the pediatrician ignored my mom concerns telling her she was just exaggerating that he wouldn’t check on me and that I was okay that she was just wasting his time by insisting. My mom insisted called an other pediatrician in an other city the pediatrician (Vietnamese) took me in despite not working that day. And after a couple minutes checking me she called an ambulance and got me to the hospital. Once at the hospital she told my parents that I wouldn’t have survived the night without the hospital…

Now that I’m an adult I know that this was clearly a case of “syndrome Méditerranée”. Basically during their studies health care professionals are told (unofficially not in the school books) that Black and Arabs don’t feel pain the same way and that we have a “cultural tendency” to exaggerate the pain we feel so we shouldn’t be taken as seriously as a white person. And because it’s France it’s called “Mediterranean” to make it sound less racist but they actually don’t apply it to white Mediterraneans and they apply it to Black non Mediterraneans.
