As he listened, he felt the need to give the man some space. A little space when a long way, and learning to communicate effectively was at the top of his radar. In some aspects, it was okay the way that they were– going to separate houses after a few days stretch of being together, knowing that they had a place to go if a fight broke out, or a disagreement. It was a safe space. It was comforting.

When Landon fully pulled away, Oliver felt his chest rising in anticipation for exactly what he was afraid of. The bomb, the explosion, the aftermath. The screaming, the disagreeing. The moments that weren’t fun. From what it looked like on the surface, the body language spoke for itself.

Oliver tensed. The question seemed a bit accusatory, a bit like he wasn’t expecting Oliver to go to someone and ask for advice, specifically someone who he may not want in their business. But, he felt that Alli was one person that he could trust. Someone who knew them both, and could give an unbiased opinion. “I did talk to her, yes, I’m sorry if that was a bit forward,” The man’s eyes looked at Landon’s stance away from him, wondering if this was a mistake. At the same time, he recognized that this was at least an okay reaction. There wasn’t screaming, there wasn’t crying. It seemed to be civil.

“I know this is a lot.” His voice softened, a bit of silence filling the air in the kitchen. “That’s why I just… wanted space to open up and talk about it. We don’t have to make any decisions right now.” He watched the man sit on the ground, the movement a bit childish, but seemingly sweet as he watched them climb into his lap willingly. “Those are all things we can talk about,” He leaned on the counter, his other hand resting on his hip as his eyes narrowed down at the man. His smile growing on his face at the man’s request, “I don’t see any problem with that. I’ll give you the moon, but only if you ask nicely. And, say please.”

Oliver paused. His throat tightening at the words; his innate reaction was to clear his throat promptly. “Because,” He bit his lip, “I love you. It’s important to me that we can navigate big decisions together,” He could bait him– he really knew what it was that could hook, line, and sink it. “Plus,” He sat on the floor in front of Landon, their knees touching. “Think about the room we can build together for your niece. The yard, the playroom– I want to help you with that. An apartment is not going to facilitate that as well, you know?”

“You’re friends with her,” Landon’s voice shook as all emotions simmered at the brim, “it’s fine.” He knew he couldn’t police who Oliver was friends with, it was just agitating that one of his closest friends was Allison. His sister-in-law. Though, despite whatever thoughts Allison had about Landon, she always managed to remain diplomatic and neutral. The curiosity of what she could’ve said would haunt Landon, however. “It’s fine.”

Burying his face against the dog’s fur, Landon realized he had no coping mechanism. Appropriate coping mechanism. If he couldn’t yell and point the finger in defense, how was he supposed to deal with questions like these? Realistic questions about the future with the man he, for what it’s worth, wanted to spend his life with. Something that he never wanted to make audible, but it seemed like he had to. “It’s so much,” Landon agreed, peering up once more. “And, I need you to know that I want to make this jump with you, I think.”

“I haven’t made this jump with anybody,” he said, clearing his throat. “I know you probably can’t believe that.” Landon accepted a sloppy kiss from the dog as Oliver unleashed his secret emotional weapon. He stared at the man’s knees while he spoke, dreaming up a scenario that was more realistic than Landon wanted to admit. “Children like to run around, don’t they?” he mused, thinking about all the breakables that were around the apartment.

Looking at houses couldn’t hurt. Discussing their absolute must-haves couldn’t hurt. Landon needed to remind himself that nothing was permanent until papers were signed. “If...if you want to build a playroom, that would mean we’re looking at a three-bedroom house to start,” he spoke slow, not wanting to get caught up in the dream aspect of everything. “One bedroom for us, one for the baby and then she has a playroom.”

It was Landon’s first niece and Lawrence Reid’s first grandchild, so it was no surprise that the Reid family was pulling all the stops for their newest member. “May I ask what wishes they couldn’t appease?” Lily asked, raising an eyebrow and wondering if she would regret opening that can of worms. Pulling a brochure out of her handbag, Lily held it up to her friend. “Also, this was not approved as part of the décor. And where did you even find this, what did you search online?” Landon was an intelligent man, but sometimes Lily worried about his antics. At least Bash and James weren’t around. “I think she’d appreciate you no matter what, Uncle Landon. And I know you’ll be the best role model you can be for her.”

“Do you really want to know?” he raised a brow, “because it might take all day.” From car seats to pacifiers, the poor employees didn’t make enough to deal with Landon’s bitching, but that was neither here nor there. Landon had almost everything he needed to provide his niece with a lofty life. With a cocky smile, Landon grabbed the brochure, proud of his work. “What do you mean, where did I find it? It’s the internet, Lily,” he shook his head. “Besides, I need people to know how to take care of my niece. I don’t know if Sanem is going to allow people to hold her-- I sure as hell wouldn’t-- but they need to know what to do.” Eyes cast downward as Landon was taken aback from the compliment. Lily was like another sister to him, but he never knew how to handle the sincere-ness of her personality. “I...thanks. I’m nervous, but I’m really going to do my best for her.”

Just as I bring chaotic excitement to her, we balance each other. That’d be a good idea though, convincing her to let me hang out with you might’ve been the hardest selling point. ❞ Teasing as she stuck out her tongue in true younger sibling fashion.

A warmer smile tugged as dark hues peered down at her stomach for a moment, nodding as Landon spoke. ❝ Trust me, the fact that she’s gonna be here in about a month, gets crazier every time I think about it. That may change when you finally get to hold her. ❞ Vision drifts between the stage and her brother, listening attentively when he talks about what been going on with him and Oliver. ❝ You didn’t, and while I’ve heard of hate or revenge fucking, not sure why you felt the need to combine them to make him jealous, but I guess that’s neither here nor there. I’m glad you’re both doing better together. ❞ Tone nothing short of sincere.

Head cants to the side curiously then, she’d known about Oliver wanting to ask him to move in, but hearing that the conversation ended up with the latter suggesting they find a place instead, was a turn of events. Whether in anger or not. ❝ Really, it sounds like the conversation went well, at least you two didn’t implode this time, which is nice. But um, so does this mean you guys are house hunting now or ? ❞

There was a comfort that washed over him as she described how Allison had been. They both knew that Landon would never stop worrying, but it had lessened. Not by much, but progress was progress.

“A month,” he repeated, taking a swig of his soda though vodka would have been helpful in this situation. Despite being in the presence of an actual legend, Landon couldn’t take his eyes off his sister, who was glowing. “A month. That is...,” he leaned in toward her stomach, speaking as if Sanem couldn’t hear, “I’m nervous to meet you, but I have so much I want to share with you.”

The slowest exhale left his lips as Landon sat back. The question was valid, just not something he understood. Pinching the bridge of his nose, he shrugged and wiped at his eyes. “Houses are permanent,” he said quietly. Houses meant living there for at least ten years, building equity. Landon had been in his apartment for almost seven years, but he knew he could break the lease anytime. What if he decided to move across the country? He couldn’t do that with a house.

“I don’t know what it means,” Landon concluded. “It’s not like we couldn’t afford something nice. We both make decent money separately, so combined...” another sip of soda. “Don’t get me wrong-- I love him. He is annoying as all hell, but I do love him in my own way. But settling down? Waking up and seeing him every morning? I never imagined opening my life up to someone and now he wants to move in with me,” scoffing playfully, Landon added, “Mom would be proud of us though. Scoring a doctor and a lawyer?”

There seemed to be a bit of anxiety riding through Landon’s system. Oliver stepped back at the sight, wanting to give him enough space to work through it. He was asking a lot of him, he understood. That made the process of standing back and being quiet way more difficult. Instead, he decided to listen and take the feedback that Landon gave him with as much gratitude as he could. He didn’t run. That’s all he could ask for right now.

“Okay,” The man started, his eyes merely keeping their sights on the brunette. Keeping calm was something he was learning to utilize, and it was much easier to do so when he recognized what was on the line. Their future. “It doesn’t have to be in this house, specifically,” He retaliated, “We can… figure it out.” The words trailed off as he tried to mimic the inhales and exhales that came off of the man’s body language. It would be best to try to keep that same energy, his therapist had told him.

“Landon,” Oliver tried his best to cut the man off, his rambling seemed to be fixated on small obsessive tendencies that the brunette could not budge on. But it was an offer that Oliver was still trying his best to work with. “Listen to me, I didn’t say that this would happen today, okay?” His hands found their way to the man’s wrists, holding them gently under his grip. Sometimes his eyes darted around too fast for Oliver to catch them, but when he did, it seemed too good to be true. “I want to live with you. Whatever that takes– redecorating, knocking out a wall, buying a fucking castle in the middle of Geneva because it has a specific type of brick that you find fitting to your Feng shui, I don’t fucking care.”

Their bodies were close, but not close enough. The taller man pulled Landon closer, gently, to not make him feel suffocated by the requests. “We can do this however you need to. I’m flexible and want to work with you,” He squinted at the man. “I told Alli I’d need a contract ready for this, I should have known you’d want a ten page document with all the necessary accommodations you’d need from me. How silly of me to forget.” His smirked, nudging the man with his nose. “Also, fuck you– you never complained about the wall when I was pushing you up against it.”

Oliver was making it difficult to fight. He would sell his house? They’d go to open houses on the weekend? They’d...combine their income? Landon inhaled, his brows furrowed together and his face scrunched up as Oliver spoke. Why would Oliver want to live with him? The answer couldn’t have been as simple as love. There needed to be an ulterior motive. Landon needed there to be a motive.

Both men were well off financially-- a doctor and a software developer. Logistically, they could afford a decent sized house with enough space for Landon to stomp off and be dramatic when he needed to. He pulled away when Oliver nudged him teasingly. It was so much to comprehend-- he needed his mom.

“You spoke to Allison?” he asked. Landon pulled out of Oliver’s grasp, using one hand to poke at the sides of his lips while the other ran through his hair. If his sister-in-law couldn’t talk Oliver out of this request, Landon was a goner. “I’m not going to complain about accent walls when your--,” eyes darted down, “nevermind. This is a lot for me, Ollie. You...you understand that, don’t you?”

Slinking down to the floor, the dogs came over and sat in front of him. It felt like a family. “We’re going to have to figure out what neighborhood we want to live in,” Landon explained, “And I reserve the right to say no to any house without reason, okay? I’m going to need an office for days when I work from home, and...,” a pause. “Why do you want to live with me?”

“Allison’s friend over there looks like she’s about to murder whoever the fuck that weird lady was,” Daniela commented with a curious eyebrow as she scanned their surroundings, taking in the whole shindig as he had so eloquently put. “So thankfully you don’t have to get your hands dirty.” A quick pause. “Tonight, at least.” A dismissive hand wave was given, a glass in the other. “Oh please, this is nothing. Sanem’s my girl, you know? Told her if I wasn’t here to assume that I was dead in a ditch somewhere.” Taking in a sip from her drink, she leaned in a little closer as if she was telling a secret. “You’re cute when you’re sappy.”

Landon snorted. “Allison isn’t the person you want as a defense attorney,” he said. “She’s a great lawyer, she’s just one with a conscience. She wouldn’t take the case.” He had gotten into a number of bouts and ridiculous scenarios with his sister-in-law, some getting so heated that his sister had to get in between them. But, he knew that Allison had a good heart. A great heart, actually. Landon nodded in understanding. “Sanem has a lot of friends,” he murmured softly. Much more than Landon had in his life, for good reason. He kept his circle so small that it was essentially a line. “I’m cute all the time, Daniela,” he raised a brow. “Just ask that tall doctor past the entry way.”

She had managed to avoid Landon since their coffee incident a couple of months prior, though she was surprised to see him at Sanem’s baby shower. The way he defended the mother to be though was heart warming, she had honestly hated it when she’d been in that situation, the way that people just felt that they had the right to touch you because you were pregnant. “It’s pretty impressive.” she replied, smiling a little. “Are you Sanem’s brother or Allison’s?”

Once he caught a glimpse of who he was talking to, Landon clicked his tongue quietly. This felt like one of those odd, worldly lessons Allison was trying to teach him about. Karma? Clearing his throat, he said “Sanem’s,” with confidence. “Hence why I don’t want people touching her.” He stood in the silence for a moment before muttering under his breath. If he was going to be a decent role model for this baby, he may as well start now. “I, uh, I’m sorry. For before. Coffee shop,” a cough. It hurt to apologize, but it was a solid attempt. “Lily really went all out for both of them, didn’t she?”

While it was a natural instinct to want to feel the baby, Lily felt some sort of way about people not asking before. She was about to ask Sanem if she was bothered by the gestures before Landon interjected and told someone not to touch Sanem’s stomach. Although he was a bit impulsive at times, Lily appreciated Landon in that moment. “It is, I know we all had a lot going on during the last few months but I’m glad we made it here before the holidays to celebrate,” Lily agreed humbly, not wanting to take full credit for something that involved a lot of people and moving parts coming together even though she had been at the helm of the ship. “You know I’ll do anything for Sanem, and Alli by extension. I plan on being there for the baby too, for whatever they need me for - although I heard that the future uncle has quite a lot covered.”

Landon nodded in silent agreement. He was sure Lily’s calendar was booked to the brim, and although he truly didn’t need (or want) to know what or whom she was spending her time with, Landon knew that took up plenty of time as well. “Future uncle,” he smiled to himself. It was coming so much sooner than he anticipated; especially as he glanced at his sister once more. “Oliver claims I went overboard, but I disagree,” Landon began. “I did some rearranging around the apartment; turned my office nook into a baby nook.” It had been a minute since he had caught up with Lily, but this was Sanem’s party. “I’ve made acquaintances with almost every supervisor at the baby store. Can’t call them friends because they couldn’t appease my every wish, but...,” a shrug. “I really want to be a decent role model for the baby. I want to be her favorite Uncle.”

“Excuse me! Yeah--” Landon waved the person down with a smile on his face. “Yeah, I appreciate you coming but please don’t touch my sisters’ stomach, okay?” he gave a less-than-friendly pat on the persons shoulder before watching them walk away. The party was beautiful, but the way people continued to go up and just touch Sanem’s stomach was maddening. He swore he’d be on his best behavior, and it helped that Oliver remained in his line of sight. “This is some shindig, eh?” Landon remarked to the person next to him. “I...I appreciate you coming out here for my sister and sister-in-law. Means a lot, actually.”

A pique of incredulity crossed over her features, in spite of the fact that she was naturally still curious, though had some suspicions, she’d heed in not asking. The less known the better perhaps. However there was a strike of proudness whenever her brother acted on more incautious sort of decisions, no matter how minor. ❝ Fair enough, but I’d like it to go on record that I’m not your accomplice. ❞ Similar slick smile tugs upwards, knowing even in the doubtful chance of getting busted, she’d stick by him.

Giving a soft ‘thanks’ to the server when their drinks were brought over, and a cushion Sanem didn’t think was completely necessary but didn’t hurt to have either. Landon’s next statement caused a roll of mocha eyes. ❝ I’m not in confinement you know, but it did take some convincing. She was more okay about us being in the seated section away from the larger crowd. ❞ Taking a sip of her sprite, a brow quirked faintly. ❝ Do I not usually look happy ? Suppose I have been feeling more on the excited side, among a bunch of other emotions. ❞ Chuckling then. ❝ Speaking of, we may not have spent a ton of time together lately but don’t think I haven’t noticed you seeming a little brighter yourself. ❞

“Listen, Allison’s great,” he began, “but she’s the opposite of you. She tethers you down to reality, and I’m sure since you’ve been pregnant she’s been like a hawk.” Landon smiled a bit, still grateful that his sister had found someone he could trust to take care of her. “I’ll have to thank her later for granting you permission to see me,” he teased.

Sitting at a show drinking soda with his sister reminded him of all the times they’d stay up late talking at home, except it was usually about nonsense. Not bringing a new life into the world. “It’s still so surreal,” Landon admitted. “I don’t think I’ll ever get used to it.” Crimson graced his cheekbones; hopefully the lighting didn’t give him away too much. “Yeah, Oliver...we’re doing alright,” he told her. “I forget if I told you, but I got rid of all my dating apps. No more hate-revenge fucking to make him upset,” a pause. He was going to need to talk to her about this eventually, and now might’ve been the only time he would catch her alone.

“He actually...,” Landon scratched at his beard, “he asked me to move in with him. Into his house, with the dogs. It was extremely sweet and I wasn’t expecting it at all, honestly.” He looked past his lashes at his sister. “I got angry and told him I hated his accent wall, then somehow said I would rather buy a new house with him. So I guess that might be the reason I may appear brighter.”
