ephrampettaline:
Ephram chortled, nodding. He might have known that Bellamy and her particular little ways would make sure to distinguish which chicken was who. “She is lovely,” he agreed. It felt only faintly odd in his mouth after their long period of estrangement, and Ephram took that as a good sign.
But he could ponder his friendship with Bellamy later; right now Lara was occupying his interest, particularly with her willingness to jump straight into work at a high-level capacity. And she didn’t gush or jump or shout or anything when Ephram told her she had the job, which was immensely encouraging in his view of it. A person didn’t need to hoot and holler over every good thing in public, especially not an officer of the law.
“You can start right now, Detective Kirk,” Ephram said. “Go get kitted up and we’ll head on out together.”

He explained as they drove out to Vinegar Tom about the decree from the Mayor, and the tasks that Soapberry’s citizens had been asked to perform. “I reckoned we’d best take on one’a the sorter more unpleasant ones,” Ephram said. Maybe it was a little mean, but after all, Lara had been a cop before and probably knew all about trials by fire.
“We gotta negotiate with some critters called bramblebracks what have come out of hibernation and are chokin’ off some of the protector trees. Thing about bramblebracks is that they’re just what they sound – critters made of briar patch that stand bout as tall as a kangaroo and feel safest wrapped around somethin’ – so negotiations can get a bit … prickly.” Ephram grinned at Lara, open-mouthed, as if this were a fantastic joke.
Lara pulled on her gear as quick as she could, more than eager to get started right then and there. Learning more about the town, getting a hang of how things were handled straight from Ephram himself would be more than what she’d been expecting on her first day.
The decree from the Mayor has just about slipped Lara’s mind... so many other things were going on for her and she barely knew what was normal and what wasn’t in town already. Dealing with one of the many tasks was definitely a fair job to ask of the sheriff’s department. “Of course.” She said, still not quite knowing what that line between pleasant and unpleasant really was. Her eyes widened when Ephram explained these bramblebracks, but her shock was replaced by a wide grin and a genuine laugh at the Sheriff’s joke. “Gotcha... so I’m guessing whenever they come out of hibernation they can be a real... thorn in the side.”
Jokes aside, Lara patted herself down and looked over at Ephram. “So... we’re just trying to get them to what? Choke off some other... non-protector tree? Go back into hibernation? What’s our goal here?”
