This was the first warning that this was no ordinary trek. A guide map for each section! How many sections? TWELVE!
This is us - minus “The Doctor” - will add him when he’s learnt some bush medicine!
Where the hell is Larapinta?
When your first ever multi-day hike is Kokoda, you can be forgiven for thinking there can’t be anything more difficult out there.
Well, I think I may have found it - the Larapinta Trail. Of course, I don’t know yet, because I haven’t done it. But after a couple of years of talking about it, a little bit of water under the bridge, a few extra kilos on board, it’s clearly time for a new adventure!
It started out with 2, then 3 (can’t leave the 13 year old home alone - apparently), then 5 because we reconnected with an old friend and made a new one, then 6, because the Student Doctor decided to come too (he may come in handy!) And a few more “possibles” in the wings. Now I feel like it’s real! It was looking like I would be the only female in a trek full of boys, but I have been saved - aka - new friend - Sara! Thank god for Sara!
“Where’s Larapinta?” I have lost count of the number of times I have heard that when I mention the Larapinta trail. So, first things first, where on earth is Larapinta? It’s in the middle of bumf*#!k nowhere (not my words). Actually, it starts just outside Alice Springs and stretches 223km West along the West MCDonnell Ranges to Mt Sonder. 223kms! Yep, 223kms in the middle of Australia!
So, here we go. Time to spend some money, stock up on light hiking gear (I’m aiming for under 8kg base weight btw), and try out some hiking meals. Oh yeah, and get some kilometers under our belt.
