It had been an emotional few months for Cali. Ever since Marco had arrived home, she had felt torn between the life she had tried to build whilst he was away and the deep feelings that just refused to let her go. As she waited in line at Everything Goes, her boyfriend behind her and his hand on her hip, Cali was faced with the usual feelings of guilt that she seemed to get anytime she was around Aydin now. It was taking it's toll and her usually sunshine personality had become a little grey.

Distracting herself by looking at the pastry counter and then by looking around the shop, Cali did a double take as saw a familiar head of blonde hair. It had been a while since she had seen Marco's ex girlfriend, not that the girls had even been close, mainly from Cali's side and the hidden jealousy but even with that, the blonde had been generous enough to check in on Cali when Marco had gone away. at first, lark's a little too focused on her latest bank statement to notice cali by the counter. she squints at her phone like she might be able to rearrange the numbers through sheer force of will. when they don't budge, she sighs, setting the phone away with the screen facing down. getting her bike fixed after someone had busted the side mirror had cost an arm and a leg. well, at least she had–– lark jumps at her name, glancing up with a mean-eyed glare that's more habit than anything at this point.

when she spots cali, it turns to surprise. ❝ oh–– hey. ❞ her gaze flickers to aydin, stood behind her. friend or more? she wonders. ❝ how you been? ❞ cali looks good, though that's no surprise to lark. the brunette is a complete bombshell. ❝ haven't seen you around since... well, you know. you should come around body worship at some point, you look a little stressed. a massage would do you good. ❞

Christmas could be a lonely time for Niko. No children or family of his own, well, unless Apollo counted, the big golden retriever. His parents asked him to visit yearly, but those calls were ignored, and the emails were quickly deleted. The pressure got to him, but he turned to parties and strangers' beds to compensate. ❝ sorry about that –– ...niko, right? ❞ she gave him a once over. the dude looked like he was severely going through it. gods, she couldn't believe she was about to say this, but... to the barista lark called out: ❝ hey, his order? put it on me. ❞ and to niko, she added. ❝ you... look like you need it. ❞

lark's living room spoke of her single status clearly: a certified bachelorette pad. though it was decently sized, a distinct lack of stuff defined the space as bigger than most. a wide dark-brown couch she'd found secondhand online took up most of the center. it sat opposite a beautiful walnut book case that was crammed full of spiky, bright plants she'd named after different rockstars ( janis was looking a little wilted, she thought to herself absently ). the entire place smelled of frankincense and chili sauce, and when the light spilled in just right, it lit everything up inside with its golden glow. it was the first place she'd ever had that lark could call truly her own, and she loved it for that, despite the leaky faucets and the ugly water stain on the ceiling.

and when callum often came over, she felt proud to have him there. proud to sit among her things and have a friend who could enjoy them with her. a friend she could sit next to and watch movies with. a friend she was honestly pretty certain had been her lover in a past life. ❝ so, I was thinking. I know you weren't really feeling the conjuring when I brought it up last week. if you're not about watching it still, I had another idea for tonight. Val had spent the morning combing through downtown for unoccupied shops. She was looking for a place she could rent, maybe even buy eventually, and use to open her own yoga studio in. It had been a long, seemingly fruitless endeavor. And she had to admit she was feeling a little disheartened already, as she plopped down at one the outdoor tables of her favorite cafe, hoping a little pick me up treat would give her the energy to get back out there. She was just opening up the menu when a familiar voice caught her attention. Val couldn't help but chuckle as she watched Lark interrogate one of her fellow patrons. When the person didn't seem to have any answers for the blonde, Val waved at the woman to get her attention. "¡Oye chica! Come join me! It's my treat since your day clearly isn't off to the best start." she offered, referring to Lark's broken mirror.

it's useless, she thought. just as lark was about ready to stroll back over to her bike, she glanced over to find val sitting close by like some heaven-sent miracle. ❝ oh, thank fuck, ❞ she exhaled under her breath, immediately walking over as her eyes widening emphatically. ❝ please. I'm so pissed off, val. what kind of asshole breaks someone's mirror and then keeps it moving? ❞ a flicker of shame wormed its way out of her psyche –– that was exactly the kind of thing lark would have done in the past. though, to be fair, she'd like to think she's grown as a person since. but then, old habits did die hard.

❝ it's going to take at least a couple hundred to fix, ❞ lark bemoaned, feeling the childish urge to kick at the chair nearby. instead, she chose to be an adult and opted to take a look at the drinks menu. ❝ I need something that will knock me on my ass." she glanced over in between searching for something appropriately boozy. ❝ what's going on with you? still on the hunt for a good space? ❞

It took a moment before Selin realised that the woman was talking to her. She literally pointed at herself to make sure that it was indeed her that the blonde was talking to before removing one of her earbuds, the music fading away from her in one ear, the rock music still playing in her other ear. The brunette's gaze moved to the bike that was mentioned and then she shook her head. "Sorry, no. I have to admit that my attention has been on my phone and music more than on my surroundings." Like it was usually the case. The young woman leaned back in her seat and tilted her head slight. "Large damage?"

in another lifetime, lark would have thought this young woman's carefree inattention to her surroundings foolish. but briar ridge was a safe town, where nothing truly bad ever happened. so instead, lark shook her head and sighed. ❝ no, ❞ she explained, pinching the bridge of her nose before dropping into the open seat in front of selin. ❝ just expensive. ❞ a migraine was beginning to build behind her brows, the autumn sun thankfully hidden behind a cluster of pale clouds.

❝ you'd think someone would have seen something. ❞ already, her frustration was beginning to melt into a quiet upset. the store was doing well enough, but she didn't have money to spare... but god, she hated filing police reports. she was, at least, distracted momentarily by the music pumping out of the other woman's earbud: ❝ what are you listening to? sounds familiar. ❞

❝ oh, motherfucker... ❞ lark glares as she takes in the busted mirror on her motorbike. shattered in several places, it'll be at least a few hundred to have replaced. suffice to say, she's pissed and bruising for a fight. clenching her jaw, lark twists her head this way and that, but no one catches her eye guiltily. her gaze narrows. ❝ hey, you! ❞ she glances about the slow-moving street, searching for onlookers who might have spied the asshole who did this to her bike. across the road, at an outdoor cafe, she marches up to the closest table. ❝ hey. sorry, to interrupt. did you see who hit my bike over there? ❞
