Game of Thrones, Season 6: Deleted Cameo
Do you ship Jaime/Brienne. Why?
I’m far, far more attached to Jaime/Brienne as a ship in ASOIAF than in Game of Thrones since the characters are quite different - in Jaime’s case, occasionally unrecognisable - on the show. GRR Martin has quite simply done a superb job of writing Jaime and Brienne as opposites who need each other, who help each other despite their differences, who become better people and experience positive change for having met one another. By George’s own admission it’s a gender-swapped Beauty and the Beast, and they slowly learn to love each other for who they are at their very cores.
Brienne sees past his golden, shining beauty and his bravado to find a wounded man hungry for honour, who’d made mistakes and done terrible things but wanted redemption and a chance to be something other than the backstabbing Kingslayer. Jaime sees past her ugliness to find a woman of astounding inner beauty who is strong and brave and loyal almost to the point of stupidity, and wants to be like her. She gives him something to aspire to. And now that Jaime has lost his hand, she strives to bear his sword for him, and be the great, honourable warrior he cannot be anymore.
And something that I think is missing from GoT Brienne is how young she is, and how, deep down, she yearns to be treated as a young lady. She’s proud of her abilities, but she doesn’t scorn her sex or scorn other women as stupid. She doesn’t scorn marriage or motherhood or feminine pursuits. Multiple times in the books she aches to be treated softly, to have a man hold and comfort her. At one point she fantasises about crying on Jaime’s shoulder, and having him soothe her as the young woman she is because she’s so tired of always having to be stoic and strong. She loves fighting and she’s good at it, but she turns away from traditionally feminine things not because she doesn’t want them but because she believes she can’t have them thanks to her appearance.
Jaime wants to be good, and wants someone to see him for who he is. Brienne brings out the best in him because he wants to live up to her faith in him. As for Brienne, she wants to be a knight and a lady, and Jaime sees her as a both. She is a warrior, and she is a lady, and he’ll strike down anyone who dares show her the least disrespect.
Despite their palpable love for each other, I doubt they’re going to marry and have a happy ever after - nor do I really want them to. I can imagine that happening in another universe, but in this story what I really want is for them to achieve redemption and fulfilment from having known each other, and loved each other in this cruel and uncertain world.
tl;dr they’re both incredibly complex characters, riddled with flaws, imperfections and insecurities. I’m in love with how their characters have grown and changed from the moment they met, I’m in love with the careful parallels and beautiful arcs GRR has created for them and I’m in love with the way they love each other. So yeah, I guess I do ship them.
My favorite annual holiday is the one (1) interaction Jaime and Brienne have every season
fuck loyalty!
I cannot wait for more of Brienne and her men. First up, we’ve got her newly minted bromance with Sandor Clegane. They’re totally gonna be battle buddies and dote on the Stark sisters together. Next up, we’ve got too-cool-for-school Jaime Lannister ready to fuck loyalty with her. There will be so many more longing gazes and flirty banter now that they are finally on the same side. Everyone in Westeros will start a pool on if or when they’ll get together. Finally, we’ve got poor Tormund who will totally ignore that she’s already got a bestie and a love interest and sit at their lunch table to try to woo her. And let’s not forget Pod, her loyal squire and president of her fanclub. Brienne’s come such a long way from being rejected by dumb average men to being respected by one very nice guy and three of the most badass fighters in Westeros.
Brienne's Relationships: A Summary
The Hound: Ex-Husband. Divorced due to irreconcilable differences.
Arya: Daughter from The Hound. Shares joint custody and talks about her accomplishments with her father.
Jaime: First love. The one that got away. We all kind of know he’s still into her though. (am I right or am I right?)
Cersei: First love’s crazy girlfriend. Totally insecure. Likes giving death stares. The bitch is psycho ya’ll.
Tormund: New suitor. Tries to get on the ex-husband’s good side.
Pod: Adopted son. Always there to brighten her day.

She had no chance against seven, she knew. No chance, and no choice. She stepped out into the rain, Oathkeeper in hand.

All of it came pouring out of Brienne then, like black blood from a wound… the voyage down the Trident, dueling Jaime in the woods, the Bloody Mummers, Jaime crying “Sapphires”, Jaime in the tub at Harrenhal with steam rising from his body, the taste of Vargo Hoat’s blood when she bit down on his ear, the bear pit, Jaime leaping down onto the sand, the long ride to King’s Landing, Sansa Stark, the vow she’d sworn to Jaime, the vow she’d sworn to Lady Catelyn, Oathkeeper, Duskendale, Maidenpool, Nimble Dick and Crackclaw and the Whispers, the men she’d killed… “I have to find her,” she finished. “There are others looking, all wanting to capture her and sell her to the queen. I have to find her first. I promised Jaime. Oathkeeper, he named the sword. I have to try to save her… or die in the attempt. - Brienne VI, AFfC
I love it when tumblr uses gifs from the show to recreate scenes skipped from the book…
lady olenna’s reaction to seeing/meeting brienne is still one of my favourite scenes ever❤️ brienne is so used to people making fun of her height and appearance, and just generally being cruel to her because of her physical traits. so when lady olenna is kind to brienne about her looks, she can’t help but be shocked but also show a hint of a smile. women being positive towards & complimenting other women is the shit i live for

He deserves that. A daughter who could sing to him and grace his hall and bear him grandsons. He deserves a son too, a strong and gallant son to bring honor to his name.
