it's understandable that aldo is freaking out because tedesco and/or adeyemi is about to become pope and undo the work the late pope (which lbr is also his work and as secretary of state he undoubtedly contributed to so in a sense it is his too)

the catholic church is older than him and will outlive him. it was hard to make it budge and even harder still is predicting what will become of it after he dies. all he wanted is to make sure that his life's work wouldn't be undone in his own lifetime.
