so if we understand firstly that the sweetheart and miss goldberg are not physically present when they're interacting with marvin or other characters in in trousers, they're personifications of how marvin sees love;

taking this to mean, of course, that he learned from his high school sweetheart that love is "crazy," "often boring," and "pretty often debris" and that he learned from miss goldberg that love "reads like a bad biography" wherein "all the names are changed to protect the innocent [columbus closed his diary and went ashore];"

and we understand secondly that the sweetheart's and miss goldberg's purpose in the story, the reason marvin is conjuring them, is to explain to the audience and to echo to him the things he has seen and known love to be;

and we understand thirdly that their existence as figments of marvin's imagination means that they are so thoroughly removed from marvin's life that he remembers them only in essence, as their core selves, as their effect on his life;

then we can finally understand with complete clarity the deep significance of whizzer appearing in marvin's mind at the end of "what would i do?" to reiterate to marvin and to the audience what their relationship has taught marvin about love.

he is taking the role to which marvin assigned the sweetheart and miss goldberg, but he takes it gently and he leaves it peacefully at the end of the song. he's not sticking around to keep reminding marvin of the lessons he's taught him on how to love; he knows that marvin has been so utterly changed by their relationship that whizzer has nothing more to teach him. they don't sing about how "marvin needs love," they sing about how beautiful their love is and was and will remain, and how grateful they are to have found it, and how it made them both better. there's an acknowledgement of the unfairness of whizzer's death, but there's no bitterness or resentment, there's no regret. it's just marvin telling whizzer he loves him without asking for anything in return. it's just gratitude. it's just love.
