your 'jaundiced' character is just olive-skinned..... that is a skin tone people can have........ some people are not warm toned and also not white I'm so sorry to say it.
In my defense the screen tone on my laptop and phone are different and I realised after it sorry!
Also I didn't wanna go full "yellow" because I think most people who want to explore drawing asian characters and/or creating it would not choose straight yellow to color it.
But, unless you have done comprehensive research on olive skin color, then it's better to be safe than sorry because a beginner artist or someone who hasn't quite catch color theory right might accidentally get it wrong and color similarly to a caricature.
Of course using yellow hues as a skin color isn't immediately a red flag for racism, but if the first thing you choose for an asian character is "ah let's go to the yellow color wheel" and don't mix or pair that hue well enough, it might get mistaken as racist caricature.
The thing is I wish I didn't have to warn people to avoid yellow or similar to it as an Asian skin color. We all have different shades of it. But because history doesn't favour us that much, we have to be mindful of how we draw Asians.
My post isn't a "you have to draw it like this" it's more like, "this is a common mistake people do when coloring, especially for Beginners. Here's what to consider if you haven't done more art studies on skin colors".
I even admit it's SUPER SIMPLIFIED and people should do comprehensive art studies AFTERWORDS for more complex understanding of different skin colors. It's not the type of post that you use to reference skin color 100% it's moreso to show the SLIGHT difference that people might miss, especially between the "most White person light skin" and "most Asian light skin".
I wouldn't be making this post if people colored actual asian characters or real life actors based on their canon ethnicity/photographs instead of immediately trying to color them like a white person.
With that being said, if there is a detailed study on olive skin colors, I would want to share and reblog it! My post isn't about diving into specifics in detail, it's to give small tips and consideration when starting out to color characters.
As an asian, I wish people would go, "How do I color this character? Let's find references on their ethnicity!" Instead of "Well they look similar to a white person in my eyes, I think I can color them similarly". Some people, SOME, don't even consider or catch the differences before just coloring them.
(of course not all Asians. Of course there are more detailed and variety of differences. But there's also a shared uniqueness that differs between us asian people and white people. There are tutorials that dive deeper into this hence why I made mine very simplified to encourage people to do more art studies.)
