the last thing that he wanted was to let something happen to the first woman that he ever loved. sure, he knew that this place probably wasn't exactly the best place to hide but it was something, right? it was better than sitting at the table as though nothing else was happening. "i don't know." he clutched her hand in his own, eyes focused on her as he looked out of the restaurant window from where he was, "either way, i think we need to get out of here." he breathed out, "but it doesn't look like it's safe out there either…"
This had to be some kind of joke. Earthquakes in Devil's Junction? That wasn't a thing."I have no clue what's going on." She could barely get the words out before another tremor hit. Glass crashed down all around them. Everything around them was falling apart. People at other tables started screaming. "We can't stay here, Zach … it’s not safe." Crawling out, she reached for his hand when the tremors stopped. "Let's just leave." She dragged him toward the exit, where the other diners were also heading towards. Once they hit the sidewalk, she glanced up and couldn't move. Something enormous was sliding between the buildings. Like a massive shadow with a life of its own. "Zach … what the fuck is that?" she whispered, and then the thing turned toward them and she could see what looked like eyes. "RUN!" she screamed, grabbing his arm and pulling him down the street as fast as her heels would let her move.
of course she knew that he was still little and that he was still getting used to just being alive. so, this wasn't something she expected him to brave against. "you're not wrong about that." she replied, her eyes noticing his smiled and she appreciated the fact that he was trying to make them feel better. he truly was a good guy and the more time she spent with him, she more she fell for him. as things quieted down, she grabbed his hand, eyes meeting his. "okay. just," she paused, scanning over his face. "just promise me you'll be careful." and with that, she finished her sentence with a kiss against his lips.
The way she kissed him knocked the wind out of him, and it wasn't just because of the contact but everything it meant after what she'd been through. "I promise," Grant said against her lips, meaning every word. "But you need to promise me something too." Most of the commotion outside had settled, but every part of him stayed focused on his purpose. He had to protect her. "When this is over, I’m going to make sure your place is sealed like a fortress.” If they had done this sooner, maybe they’d have a better chance of survival. Then again, who would have ever predicted this happening? The dog had mellowed out between them, breathing steady now that he felt the threat backing off. “Those things aren't natural, and I can't handle the thought of you being vulnerable but right now, I need to make sure things are alright out there.”
she panted softly, her body feeling as though it were on fire as she tried to take in what really happened. looking up at her husband as he approached her, she felt way weaker than she did just moments before and she leaned against him. "i should have told you," she mumbled, clearing her throat and looking up at him with tired eyes. "duke told me it ran in the family but i didn't believe him. i should have…" she breathed out as she attempted to get up on her own, her body struggling slightly.
All this time she'd kept that secret locked away and he hadn't picked up on any of it. His mind started racing about what else might be out there. "Whoa, take a breath … you don't have to dump it all on me right now." He reached out to keep her from swaying on her feet. She felt like she was burning up from the inside out. "Think you can make it on your own or should I just scoop you up?" All that commotion happening nearby reminded him this wasn't over. “Whatever's in your DNA just kept us both alive … so let's not beat yourself up about the past right now. Right now I need to know if this transformation is going to drain you completely or if there's more coming."
despite living in devil's junction her whole life, the whole place looked like a completely new town. she had no idea where they were and she just hoped that they were closing in on their journey because she truly wasn't sure how much more she could take. her legs were on fire and her heart felt like it was going to beat right out of her chest. "okay." she panted out, pushing herself to keep going despite her body wanting to completely give in to its exhaustion. "tristan, i don't know if i can make it…"
His muscles burned but seeing the blue awning of his apartment building felt like winning the lottery. This was really happening. There, that's it!" he said, pulling her toward the entrance as that horrible scraping sound got closer behind them. Crashing through those doors felt like being reborn. Without thinking, he grabbed every piece of furniture in sight and started hauling it toward the doors. "Give me a hand with this!" He grunted while wrestling a massive plant toward the entrance. The emergency alert had been clear about shutting everything down and hiding indoors. Whatever those things were, they tracked people through electricity and movement. We need to get upstairs and kill all the lights," he told her, grabbing her hand again as they headed for the stairwell. "My apartment's on the second floor."

Kaia paced between the folding tables where volunteers sorted supplies. It had been about a week since she'd last seen Jordan, and the silence was eating her alive. There was no way for her to contact her sister with the internet and phone lines being dead. "Dane, we have to go look for her," she said, stopping in front of him. Her voice came out sharper than she meant, but panic had a way of doing that. "I know you think I'm being crazy, but Jordan wouldn't just disappear. She's probably holed up with Forrest. Let's just hope they're not killed." She didn't want to think negative thoughts, but a bunch of people died because of those fucking Xerion creatures. If they killed Jordan, she didn't know what she would do with herself. She wanted to believe that her sister was okay, but all she could think about was her sister somewhere out there, alone. She couldn't face the world without her sister. For so long, it had always been just them. She had to find Jordan. Looking at Dane again, she said, "I can't just sit here anymore. What if she's hurt? What if she's trapped somewhere and waiting for help that's never coming?" Was she begging? Yes. But there's no way around it now. He's a dragon, he could help her find her sister sooner.

Consciousness crept back to Cian as he noticed Mariana hadn't moved from his side. The pharmacy felt different now, quieter, and sunlight leaking through damaged windows proved they'd survived the night. He tried shifting position, ready for his cuts to scream at him, but only felt this nagging ache. Weird as hell. Could be his abilities had kicked in to help patch him up. Something to investigate when he had time. He studied Mariana's sleeping features, thinking about how she wouldn't budge even with blood pooling around them. Getting out of there alive, both of them, still felt unreal. Those dark creatures had targeted every living thing, but they'd lasted through the darkness. A sudden bellow came from outside, followed by what seemed like all the city's emergency systems activating together. Cian picked up pieces of a voice describing dragons from other worlds fighting Xerion creatures. Once the message stopped, Mariana was awake and watching him closely. "Well, that was interesting," he said quietly. "So ... what should we do now?"

The coordination center was packed with people, but Forrest barely noticed them. He'd been searching for Jordan for days now and it had worn him down. Every single day, he went to every different places. The feat hadn't been easy since he had to make the journey on foot mostly. She'd been fighting with those dragons one second, then he was regaining consciousness in a stranger's basement with his head throbbing and no idea where he got there. He squeezed past another cluster of evacuees. That's when he spotted her by the back wall, talking to some woman. The wave of relief nearly sent him to his knees. She was alive and looked unharmed. "Jordan!" he shouted, not giving a damn who was listening. He covered the distance in heartbeats, wrapping his arms around her and kissing her like tomorrow was cancelled. Hell, maybe it was. He didn't care if she shoved him off, didn't care if she was pissed about him vanishing, didn't care about a single thing beyond her being warm and solid and actually there. When he broke the kiss, he held her face in his hands, looking down at her pretty face. "Jesus, I'm so relieved you're alright. I've been losing my mind worrying about you."

"Thomas!" Vera sprinted toward him and the hurt man when this huge orange dragon touched down close by. Heat rolled off it, making the ice melt into water that ran everywhere on the street. The dragon dropped its head down to look at the sick guy. Hot air puffed from its nose while it stared at him with those glowing red eyes.
Out of nowhere, it blew a soft flame that covered the man entirely. her heart nearly stopped beating, but the fire didn't burn him at all. Instead, the flames seemed to draw something dark and writhing from his body. Those shadow creatures just vanished in the dragon's fire. His convulsions came to an end. His breathing evened out. The guy still looked awful, but he wasn't hurting anymore.
"Xerion infection," the dragon announced in a rumbling tone. "He will heal now. You planning to stay here or fight?"
Thomas stood beside her gaping at what happened, completely speechless. She latched onto his arm since she couldn't make sense of any of this anymore. Was this even real life? Dragons were popping up everywhere now. And they could talk, which made it even weirder. "Babe, I have no clue what we're supposed to do. We need to pick something."
their relationship was definitely something she cherished. nayeli had gotten her through a lot and if she didn't have her or her husband, she wouldn't know what to do. arielle held back a giggle as she put down the draw two down and watched as the other drew the cards. "well, we were. you know, until that's the only thing i had. of course, that's the only reason i played it." she knew she was lying but it sounded good. nayeli definitely could see right through her. "revenge? but for what?"
That sweet act Arielle pulled never worked anymore, not when they'd known each other this long. "Oh sure, you had no other cards to play," Nayeli muttered while snatching up her punishment cards. Complete junk in both cards, naturally. Watching Arielle try to process the revenge comment almost made up for getting hit with that stupid card. "Just setting up my payback strategy for later rounds." Nayeli dropped a blue 5, relieved to ditch at least one card. "Revenge against the game, obviously ... what did you think I meant?"
She had to laugh at that—not a sarcastic scoff, either. She didn't know what she'd expect to hear when he opened up, but 'top quality everyday nonsense'? That actually made her snort. "Top quality coffee, I can get behind. The nonsense part, though…" She gave him a quick sideways once-over, then smirked. "…I dunno, you look like a high-maintenance kind of brooder to me. But I'll take your word for it."
Coming from her, that was hilarious. He's not a brooder. That grates at him. Since when did other people's opinions get under his skin like this? "High-maintenance? I literally wear the same outfit every day to avoid decisions." The brooder comment wouldn't leave him alone though. She saw someone he wasn't. "But for real, I don't brood. What even is a brooder supposed to look like? Because I'm lost here."
he knew that nothing could stop the inevitable and even so, he worried what might happen if the two of them were apart. his brother meant a lot to him and he hoped he knew that. christian glared at his brother, shaking his head. "you can't defend yourself in this state. you're in a god damn hospital bed. can't you just let me be here for you? this is just like last time. it's like you don't even want me around."
The protective brother act was back in full swing again. Christian was watching him like he was about to fall apart at any minute. "It's not that I want you gone, but come on ... I'm not about to keel over." Levi was getting sick of this treatment. His brother kept acting like he couldn't tie his own shoes anymore just because someone had worked him over. "You being worried makes sense, but babysitting me isn't going to do anything if they decide to come back." Yeah, his ribs hurt like hell when he twisted the wrong way, but he wasn't some invalid. "I'm done with everyone telling me I can't handle my own life. Everything's okay. I'm okay. Christian needs to go back to his place."
christian held back a sigh. forrest posed a good point and he knew he looked like shit. plus, he was right. christian hadn't slept in days and he was exhausted. his head was pounding. on top of that, he could use a couple of days off. "it's just hard. i wish i could protect everyone but i know that's not possible. maybe i should take some time off. think you can hold the fort down?"
Seeing Christian like this made Forrest's stomach turn. No doubt about it, his partner looked absolutely terrible. "You're basically a walking zombie right now," he said. Somebody had to be honest here. His partner refused to quit this martyr act and kept absorbing other people's troubles as if he controlled everything. "You shouldn't feel like you have to protect everyone ... it's not going to help anyone." Not to mention insane. He nodded. "Yeah, I'll take care of things."
he couldn't help but to shake his head at the man in front of him. "it's not that i'm uptight but it's that you don't know when to let shit go. we can't ever just have a normal conversation." ford sighed. "but i really don't want to sit here and argue with you, so can we just relax for right now?" he asked and pushed his fingers through his hair. "i guess i've just got a lot on my plate right now. i'm trying to get hae-rin's family on my side and her brother isn't exactly stoked by our sudden marriage."
This was new - Ford trying to have an actual conversation without getting all worked up. Forrest had been messing with him since they walked in, but seeing his brother this wound up about everything wasn't fun anymore. Time for a ceasefire. "Okay, message received," he said, leaning away from the table. "Come on, her brother's doing what brothers do ... protecting his sister." He felt his mouth twitching into a smile despite himself. "But let's be honest here, you scream 'marry my daughter' energy. Her parents will worship you. And that's your nightmare right there."
"I love you too." His fingers tightened around hers while a grin broke through. "Even when you're making up marriage clauses." He had to admit she was right about the dress. "Fine, my mind was elsewhere. But I'm always distracted when it comes to you." That certificate joke eased the pressure in his chest. They could actually handle whatever was about to come, he truly believed that. "I'm not letting the breakfast thing go." The moment the doctor appeared, the atmosphere changed. Alaric straightened in his seat, catching the look on the doctor's face, and his stomach dropped. "What's going on, Doc? Do you have her test results? Is she alright?" Without thinking, he held Arielle's hand tighter. The shift from husband to doctor happened before he could stop it.
smiling at his response, she relaxed a little into the pillow. arielle loved hearing those words come out of his mouth. it was hard not to. she giggled softly, "i can't say that i'm surprised." she spoke and leaned toward him, placing a sweet kiss on his cheek. it was a difficult move, having to dodge everything to was hooked up to just to give him a kiss on his cheek. the doctor gave them both a look of sympathy before he spoke, "all the results came back," he paused for a moment and cleared his throat, "unfortunately, her kidney levels didn't come back well. her lungs aren't functioning at full capacity. the loss of consciousness is normal when someone's body is shutting down...i'm sorry, but there's not much else we can do...she's allowed to go home to live out what time she has left, if that's what you both prefer."

That roar from the dragon made her ears hurt but she kept pulling the guy along. "Yeah, we're moving." His weight kept shifting and she had to get a better grip. He was mumbling crazy stuff now about fire instead of shadows running through his veins. Just what they needed. Those creatures were doing more damage. Ahead of them the concrete channel kept going. Daylight was filtering down from what might be a storm drain opening. "Is that actually a way out up there?" Her arms were killing her from hauling this guy around. But they were close to getting out of this underground hell. His skin felt hot now instead of cold and sweaty. He was running a fever that was climbing quick. What that meant for the rest of them… she didn't want to go there. The battle sounds behind them were getting worse. More roaring and crackling like a massive fire. "Thomas, can you see if we can get up there?" The tunnel was sloping up now. Fresh air mixed with smoke hit her nose. Not like the stale air they'd been breathing down here. The worker jerked in her arms all of a sudden. Started babbling about dragons coming to save everyone. "Okay buddy, let's just focus on getting you out of here first."
Thomas can't make heads or tails of what this guy is saying about dragons. He doesn't have a second to waste trying to decode it though. "Yeah I can see the opening," he yells back. He shifts his hold on the man's scorching arm. The fever keeps climbing and Thomas won't let himself think about catching whatever disease this is. Concrete rises up ahead of them. Real sunlight pours through what might be a storm drain. Outdoor air finally comes. Ash and particles float in it. His muscles protest from carrying this passed-out weight but liberation is within reach. The worker stiffens up abruptly. He starts convulsing like he's having some medical crisis. "We need to hustle," Thomas yells. More thundering noises roll from their wake. Whatever those black things are, they're still going at it below. The commotion builds and builds. They arrive at the way out. Thomas pushes the worker up ahead of him before pulling himself through. The instant he pops into bright light the heat rockets upward. Like someone jacked up an industrial heater. Ice blanketing every surface begins thawing in massive slabs. Vapour lifts off the asphalt. Thomas glances upward and spots wings. Enormous wings cut out the sunlight. A dragon touches down fifty feet from them. Its scales shine bright orange through the dark haze. Turns out the worker wasn't seeing things.

This place felt off and she wasn't wrong about it. Still, after what went down in the city, they were pretty much out of choices. Forrest's eyes swept across the empty area in front of them. That dead quiet was getting under his skin. "Yeah, this whole place gives me the creeps too." His fingers drummed on the wheel. "At least we don't have people trying to flatten us with cars anymore." How cold it got was really getting under his skin, which he didn't want to think about too much. After the heat wave earlier, none of this made sense. Usually when things got heavy, he'd start joking around. This time though, that strange humming in the air was making his jaw ache. "Okay, so maybe it's got that creepy film vibe going, but we needed to bail from that mob scene." He stopped the truck completely and studied the quiet landscape around them. Not a single thing was stirring and the engine ticking was the only sound around. Maybe his paranoia was getting the better of him this time. Could be they'd actually discovered somewhere protected to rest up and decide what came next. "This place looks okay." He cracked open his door and climbed out. As soon as he stood up, a giant creature made of shadows formed out of the dark behind them.
Bad vibes stick to Jordan like glue, and Forrest's fake calm drives her crazy. Watching him step down from the truck makes her feel sick. "Stay in there!" she shouts but he's already moving. Something black and twisty appears behind him and her body takes over. Sharp rocks blast out of the dirt everywhere. Panic does something nuts to the earth that doesn't add up. She's flying blind here completely. Stone pieces break loose and surround the wailing creature. New dark shapes rush in, and she blasts concrete chunks at them while voltage runs through her arms. Colossal wings swallow up all the daylight. Giant winged beasts plummet from overhead, and she thinks wonderful, because ground fighting wasn't tough enough. One slams down nearby and their eye contact screams mutual respect. Her soil abilities join forces with dragon flames. They massacre shadow beast after shadow beast until silence returns. Once the last beast fades into nothing, dead silence surrounds her. The dragon dips its head once then rockets skyward. She sees the driver's door hanging loose and Forrest has vanished completely. No shoe prints, no scuffle evidence, not a single clue anywhere. Only blank space where he was supposed to exist. "Forrest!" she yells, whirling around like crazy. "Where'd you disappear to, damn it?"
