Sometimes when I’m down I think about LMM and that performance at the White House. He was invited to perform from his previous musical, In the Heights, but he asked(!) if instead he could perform this unfinished piece (!) from a concept album that made everyone he talked to laugh because it sounded so stupid (!!!) and look at him, he’s so terrified, he’s got this idea and he believes in it and he keeps rapping through the laughter when this amazing moment he has planned in his head comes out ridiculous and farcical because he hasn’t got a budget or a cast or a stage yet, and then–

–and then it works, and that moment was worth every derisive laugh it took to keep it in the early drafts because he was right that it’s an amazing way to introduce his character, a brilliant callback moment to all the hip-hop artists who climbed their way out of hell with their words, he was right about the whole ridiculous concept because that fusion of old and new is what gives the musical its power.

He took this enormous risk. He took this idea he loved and put it out there in 2009 knowing that the if he did, he was so much more likely to get the patronage and money to make it a reality–and he did. The risk paid off. And now when he says that name, the whole room roars.
