The last Art Journal class of the summer!  Love the use of fodder to inspire exploration of themes, ideas, and materials.  We also learned how to make image transfers using duct tape in our work.  #artjournal #art

Last week we worked with watercolors, watercolor resist, and mixed media.  I really like seeing what the kids have one in between class.  Great use of fodder materials like cough drop wrappers, etc.  You really can make anything into art!  #art #artjournal

This week in Art Journal Club, we worked with pastels and stencils.  I showed students how to apply and blend pastels.  Lots of great variations on this.  And, some students did a great job of using their “fodder” as a starting point in their work.  I’m going to talk about that much more this Thursday.   See you then!

This week, we explored textures.  Kids could bring in their own objects to use to make prints with paint, and I also brought a variety of objects as well. We made mono prints using foam and paint, and used various objects to stamp patterns.  We also used some glitter at the end of class to add accents to our art.  #art #artjournal

This week, we worked on doodling with patterns and shapes.  I showed students how you can take a journal page, draw a repeating  and overlapping shape such as circles, squares, triangles, lines, or a combination of shapes, and then use it as a starting point pattern to color.  Some kids chose to turn this into a picture, some did zentangles, and some just colored the shapes. Other kids decided to do something else, and that is always okay too! This is something they can do anytime, anywhere, as long as they have their journal, pencils and markers or crayons.  We used paint and marker today, but the possibilities are endless!

Welcome to Art Journal Club 2015!  This week, we painted our covers.  Some of us also used stencils and paper collage.  Since our journals are an ongoing expression of art, we can always add things to our covers at any time.  With that in mind, start collecting things and store them in a large ziplock bag.  Pictures, ticket stubs, flyers, maps, etc.... pretty much anything can be turned into a work of art in our journals.  See you next week!

City of Dublin Golf Ball Concept Sketch.  Including Dublin, Ohio events:  Frog Jump, 5K races, 4th of July, St. Patrick's Day, various golf tournaments, Jack Nicklaus, Dublin Irish Festival, Classic Car Show, and Soccer tournaments.  It's not everyday you get to paint a giant 5 foot golf ball!

Needing a little Sunshine State in my Life

It occurred to me on the drive home from Destin, Florida after over 20 years of living in Ohio, I need my house to look a little more like Florida as I don't see us moving any time soon. I'm not talking blue couches, wicker furniture, glass tables, or a pink flamingo on the lawn (although the latter might be sort of a hoot!). I'm thinking more sea glass inspired hues on the walls and in the decor up in here. Don't know why I never thought of it before. I need a little more Sunshine State in my everyday life up here to get me through the cold dark months.

It also has me thinking about possible art projects.  Specifically, those that address the idea of place and mapping.  I so seldom identify myself as an Ohioan, yet I've lived here longer than anywhere else.

Title: Sustainable Columbus Artist Statement I created the skyline of Columbus using corrugated cardboard and paper Whole Foods bags. Striving to become a sustainable community should be a goal for all citizens. We only have one planet. We need to do a better job of recycling, reusing, and repurposing materials. We must rethink the way we live our lives. Shopping local, supporting local farmers and communities should be priorities. Small changes can make a big difference.

Group two of the photo collages using PocketBooth photos and other art created during the Art Journal Club class.

For our last class, students were given free reign with the PocketBooth photos I took of them a couple of weeks ago. Some chose to make a collage of them with other elements and/or incorporate them into a painting using watercolors or acrylics, marker, and watercolor pencil.

More nature print journal pages from the Art Journal Club students.

This week, students were asked to bring small objects that have meaning for them to create artwork with. We put the objects on Nature Print -photo sensitive paper. Exposure in the sun creates a "sun print". We talked about traditional photography and the magic of waiting for film to develop... something that's unheard of in the digital age. Once the paper was exposed, washed in a water bath, and laid out to dry, students pasted these photos in their journals and used a variety of materials to create works of art. Finally, I gave students to option of a short statement about their work. Some chose to do this and others did not. We couldn't have gotten luckier with the weather... sunny and not too windy!
